The candidates of Miss Earth 2022 are currently doing what Filipino tourists have not done for the longest of time – i.e. travel around the country for a specified period. To date, the ladies have been to Zamboanga City, Romblon, Palawan (Brooke’s Point), Pampanga, Laguna and Batangas City. Soon, there will be Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental on the schedule.
I doff my hat to Carousel Productions for doing an amazing job of organizing everything so well, intermittently bad weather notwithstanding. And the candidates are enjoying the activities.
Just when I thought that coming up with a Final Prediction for the Top 10 of Miss Philippines Earth 2020 would be easy peasy, the last three weeks of preliminary competitions and official pre-judgings have certainly made it difficult to add and subtract Eco Angels in the list. In fact, I would have been more relieved if the Top 15 will be called for the first cut instead.
Be that as it may, the first six spots are almost givens. This considering the collective performances they have shown all throughout:
Shane Tormes of Atimonan, Quezon
Roxanne Baeyens of Baguio City
Patrixia Sherly Santos of Daraga, Albay
Hannah Bithiah Merino of Sta. Rosa City
Gianna Llanes of Mandaluyong City
Justiene Ortega of City of Manila
As far as the last four spots are concerned, this is where the choices have become trickier.
June Cyra Pineda of Talacogon, Agusan Del Sur has certainly zoomed ahead early on. She has reached a plateau during the last week and a a half, though. But I’m pretty sure she has done enough to secure a placement.
The last three ladies are those who have managed to steadily move up from the prejudgings and the rest of the preliminary events since mid-June. There is still a push-and-pull probability of them making it or not. But I am placing my bets on Ilyssa Mendoza of Fil-Melbourne, Rizza Paula Infante of La Castellana, Negros Occidental and Isobel Teano of Opol, Misamis Oriental.
With the line-up above, the race for the Top 5 is going to put a lot of pressure on the first six. But anyone among them would make wonderful brand ambassadors of the pageant for one full year.
I am giving the Top 5 places to Shane Tormes, Patrixia Sherly Santos, Gianna Llanes, Roxanne Baeyens and Justiene Ortega – all from Luzon and NCR. If one of them slips with a sub-standard presentation during the finals, then it would pave the way for one of the ladies in the lower half.
Best of luck to all Eco Angels! May the best of the batch be proclaimed on Sunday morning so they can swimmingly fulfill their reigns in the new normal of pageantry.
Džejla Glavović – she won Miss Earth 2002 but was dethroned seven months after
In only its second year of existence, Miss Earth crowned another European as the winner. Džejla Glavović of Bosnia & Herzegovina was adjudged the best that time. But almost seven months after, the organizers dethroned her for being unable to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the title. As a result, her 1st Runner-Up (Miss Earth Air 2002) Winfred Omwakwe of Kenya took over for the remainder of the reign.
”Džejla Glavović of Bosnia & Herzegovina won the title that year, also receiving Miss Talent. However, on May 28, 2003, the Miss Earth Foundation officially dethroned her “due to her failure to comply with the stipulations in her contract.” Miss Air (First runner-up) from Kenya, Winfred Omwakwe, took over the position of Miss Earth 2002. Omwakwe was formally crowned as the new Miss Earth 2002 on August 7, 2003 at the Carousel Gardens in Mandaluyong City, Philippines…”
Winnie Omwakwe took over as Miss Earth 2002
Being a top model in her home country and parts of Eastern Europe, Džejla must have been hard-pressed to turn down job offers without necessarily seeking the permission of Carousel Productions. I reckon that she chose to take the risk of losing the crown in order to freely accept new modeling assignments that are more income-generating on a professional level. The title of Miss Earth was still trying to build its brand at the time. And in her part of the world, the recognition possibly didn’t matter much to booking agents and the like. Hence, the pageant mileage may not have worked to her advantage.
While her replacement only had three months of reign as Miss Earth 2002, Winnie maximized whatever opportunities that came with the title. Being tagged as the first African to win the crown, she brought joy to her fellow Kenyans. A Physiotherapist by profession, she pursued the pageant’s environmental causes before finally making a farewell walk during Miss Earth 2003 where she was succeeded by Dania Prince of Honduras (left photo).
The first national beauty pageant to open its doors for 2020
For its 20th year, Miss Philippines Earth takes on the theme “Eco-Angels” to underscore the delegates’ role as guardians of nature.
Today, more than ever, there is a need to further environmental awareness especially among the youth on the Earth’s worsening condition, and the MPE delegates would be ready to spread their wings and guide the people on how to adapt a more sustainable lifestyle.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM CAROUSEL PRODUCTIONS, INC. – MISS EARTH ORGANIZER
1. Delegates of Miss Earth are divided into three (3) groups with each group having three (3) Team Managers and three (3) Philippine National Police (PNP) detail.
2. At the very start of the pageant, the Team Managers brief all the delegates on several matters including, but not limited to, what their activities will be during their stay, the need to rest and sleep early, how to look after their personal stuff like wallets and telephones when they are out, to not believe or ignore people they meet who claim to be one of the pageant’s judges and, most important, to report immediately to their Team Manager or PNP detail if they have any problems whatsoever especially on their safety and security.
3. In a function last October 14, Miss Canada and Miss England reported to their Team Managers that they felt like being sexually harassed by one of the function’s sponsors. The moment the office told me about the incident, I called the Team Managers immediately and asked them what happened. Right there and then I told the Team Manager to give the phone to Miss England and then to Miss Canada so I could talk to them and find out what happened. I assured them that the Miss Earth organization does not condone nor tolerate any rude or immoral behavior towards the delegates by sponsors or anybody for that matter. I IMMEDIATELY instructed our Project Director to ban the alleged perpetrator from all further functions and events. I reminded the Team Managers and Police Security detail to be more vigilant in making sure that none of the candidates experience this unfortunate incident again.
4. Subsequently, I requested ALL the delegates to submit a written statement to me to enable me to find out directly from them if they experienced a similar incident so we could take appropriate action. I also wanted to find out if any of the other delegates could corroborate the complaint of Miss Canada and Miss England so we could use the statements to help the two in case they decided to file a case against the alleged harasser. We were ready to support the two in any action they may have wished to take against the individual who offended them. Unfortunately, instead of working together with us on this matter they opted to go to social media and discredit and disparage the organization.
5. The Miss Earth Organization DOES NOT CONFISCATE passports of delegates. In the 18 years we’ve been doing this pageant, there had been several instances of candidates misplacing or losing their passports. We hold the delegates passports for safekeeping and to facilitate their check-in for their domestic flights and hotel accommodations. The delegates are free to keep their passports if they want to. We make them sign a Waiver that should they lose or misplace their passport the organization would not be responsible for it. Incidentally, Miss Liberia who was supposed to fly back to her country last November 5 was not allowed to fly because she had misplaced her passport. She had to stay overnight in the airport because she was not allowed to re-enter the country and go back to the hotel without a passport.
6. The Miss Earth organization has always and continues to look after the safety, security and welfare of its candidates. It has not and will never condone nor tolerate any offensive or indecent acts or behavior to be committed towards or against any of its delegates and staff.
Earlier today, the contract signing was held formalizing the move of Miss Earth and Carousel Productions Inc. to GMA-7 as its Official TV airing network.
Present were Carousel EVP Lorraine Schuck, Carousel VP Peachy Veneracion, GMA Network’s Joey Abacan and some of this year’s candidates, including Celeste Cortesi of the Philippines.
Meanwhile, the Welcome Party for this year’s candidates was held at Carousel Mansion in Mandaluyong City. Below are some photos of the delegates during the festive gathering.

Environmental Heroines a la Superheroes of the Modern Age is the fresh new take on Miss Earth 2017. Much like the Wonder Woman movie that has been released this year, the approach is like a Hollywood blockbuster that espouses their Earth Warrior qualities at the same time. I believe the credit goes to the young minds that Carousel Productions is now utilizing in the production process, much like how Miss Philippines Earth 2017 was presented last July.
Watch the teaser video below.

Below is a preview of how the candidates will be presented soon, alongside their respective Superheroines and environmental thrusts. Here are the ladies from Thailand, Nigeria, Belarus, Spain, Bahamas, Switzerland and Hungary.
Last night’s Swimsuit Preliminaries of Miss Philippines Earth 2017 raised more than a few eyebrows
Last night at Oakwood Joy~Nostalg Center in Ortigas, Carousel Productions introduced two firsts in their pre-pageant activities for Miss Philippines Earth 2017. The usually closed-door preliminary judging of the swimsuit competition – dubbed Beauty of Figure – was made open to the public – with select members of the media and special guests in attendance. And what was more intriguing to most came during the actual judging when the candidates individually paraded in black two-piece swimwears with their faces veiled in black.
Reviews were mixed as some quarters did not particularly liked the implication of faceless bodies being assessed. There were comments that stated opposition since the entire judging should really complete the look – face/body, confidence and physical fitness. I was also taken aback by the novel idea. It wasn’t easy covering the event where faces are covered. Someone even joked that the ladies appeared like going for a swim but got lost along the way and ended up attending a wake instead. A bad quip really, but it can’t really be helped because even the press photographers got uneasy taking good pictures when the faces could not be properly matched with the figures. The organizers defended the concept by stating that the focus is really on Beauty of Figure, just as next week’s Beauty of Face/Poise will zero in on the ones with the…what else but beautiful faces. And on July 10, Beauty of Intelligence will have them scored on how well they can handle Q&As.
Mercifully, the veils were removed as soon as the preliminary judging was completed. The smiles on the ladies’ faces made up for the earlier cover-ups. Here are sample photos from last night’s activity.
