The first time I learned that Miss Universe 2013 will be held in Russia, my level of excitement jacked up several notches. With Bb. Pilipinas celebrating its 50th Anniversary that same year, knowing that Miss Universe Philippines Ariella Arida will fly to Moscow for the competition was more than enough to make me anticipate her mission. And true to my expectations then, she built friendships with some of the important candidates in the batch after she got short-listed all the time with a select group for extra pre-pageant activities. One of them was eventual 1st Runner-Up Patricia Yurena Rodríguez of Spain. And the other one is the big winner herself – Gabriela Isler of Venezuela. All three of them made it to the Top 5, and I was once more hoping that our representative would clinch the elusive 2nd Runner-Up position to make them the Top 3. Nevertheless, I was happy that she was named 3rd Runner-Up – a continuation of our streak in the annual event.

I have always said that Gabriela Isler is one of my all-time favorite Miss Venezuela winners because she constantly exuded a grounded and accessible self that made her such a charmer who can make anyone feel at ease with her presence. And I bet the MUO had one of the most pleasant working relationships with her as well. After winning in Russia, she seriously buckled up for the demands of the crown. She ticked all the boxes in terms of travel requirements and public appearances.

I was pleased when Gabriela attended the Miss Russia 2014 finals with our very own Miss World 2013 Megan Young (left photo). But I was more pleased when she travelled to the Philippines to raise funds for the Typhoon Yolanda victims – something which brought her even closer to the hearts of the Filipinos.

Long after her reign, Gabriela founded the Universe of Blessings Fund which is a charity organization devoted to female empowerment and counseling. And on the pageant side, she evolved even further when she assumed the National Directorship of Miss Venezuela – a position where she succeeded the popular beauty queen maker, Osmel Sousa.

Last January, 2019, Gabriela was brought to the Philippines once more by Miss World Philippines Organization National Director Arnold Vegafria to check on potential career opportunities in local showbiz. I’m not certain if talks and negotiations prospered, but it was a joy to see her in the flesh once more.

Gabriela attended the Miss Universe 2019 finals in Atlanta, Georgia last December.

Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2013 Cindy Miranda made it to the Top 10 of Miss Tourism Queen International in China

There is a good reason why Gold is always attached to significant milestones. It equates to fifty (50) solid years of achievement – be it marriage or a corporation or personal age. In this case, the high standard is set for national pageantry. Binibining Pilipinas, that is.

Bb. Pilipinas 2013, or Bb. Pilipinas Gold if you will, earned its place in pageant history as one of the grandest and most exciting editions ever. Just imagine assembling fifty (50) official candidates instead of the usual forty (40) or less in the past. The gathering onstage of many previous titleholders made it extra special as well. And among the four titleholders, BPCI produced the country’s fifth Miss International crown, first Miss Supranational win, a fourth consecutive Top 5 finish in Miss Universe and a Top 10 placement in Miss Tourism Queen International. What’s more, this is the only year when only a sole runner-up was named – Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach – the woman destined to claim our third Miss Universe victory two years later.

Pageant fans and followers have always graded the success rate of each Bb. Pilipinas edition based not only on the performances of the actual titleholders, but also the future successes of a runner-up or semifinalist. But if we exclusively take the set of winners, the four queens of 2013 can still hold a candle if compared to the 2015 (a Miss Universe, a Miss Globe, a Miss Intercontinental 1st Runner-Up and a Miss International Top 10 Finisher) or the 2018 (a Miss Universe, a Miss Intercontinental, a Miss International 1st Runner-Up, a Miss Supranational Top 10 placer and a Miss Globe Top 15) batches. On top of this, being part of Bb. Pilipinas 2013 is already an honor. At the end of the day, there is one and there will only be one Binibining Pilipinas Gold.

Let me end this entry by sharing a video clip of a scene from the ABSCBN Drama Antholoy “Maalaala Mo Kaya” when actress Liza Soberano played the role of Pia Wurtzbach. This was the part where the 2013 winners had a Press Conference in front of members of the media.

Book and Borders, Brawns and Beauties

If you attended the formal opening of Book and Borders Cafe along Tomas Morato in Quezon City yesterday, chances are that you’d get starstruck with the beautiful and handsome guests who graced the happy and mind-filling occasion – all from Team Mercator of Jonas Gaffud.

Two lovely Miss Universe runners-up – 2010’s Venus Raj and 2013’s Ariella Arida – gamely offered their time to be the ‘baristas’ during the event. Bb. Pilipinas 2015 alumna Teresita Ssen “Wynwyn” Marquez lent her full dramatic speaking voice when it was time to do the book reading. Singer-actor Ken Alfonso delivered a melodious number that made the girls in the place go ga-ga over his looks and voice. Models Sam Ajdani and Amadeo Leandro made sure that their presence alone was more than enough to make heads turn 180 degrees everywhere they go. And TV/Film personalities Benjamin Alves and Karylle warmly welcomed everyone with their usual book-loving charms.

Do take the time to drop by Book and Borders Cafe one of these days. You won’t be able to see the complete cast of beautiful guests all in one place again, but you will definitely get more for your productive time with books, coffee, smoothies and good food to while those lazy afternoons or relaxing early nights inside its cozy set-up.

Last year, it was Ann Curtis. Now, it’s Toni Gonzaga’s turn to host Bb. Pilipinas 2015. Together with Xian Lim, she will lead the way in navigating the finals night into its exciting climax this coming Sunday, March 15.

The pair will be joined by our ever trusty trio of Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup-Lee and Ariella Arida who will serve as anchorpersons all throughout the proceedings.

Happy with the hosting combo? 😉

bbplogo2015a If only Miss Universe Philippines 2012 and Miss Universe 2012 1st Runner-Up Janine Tugonon is not swamped with work and modeling gigs in the US, she would have been able to join her sisters Ariella Arida, Shamcey Supsup-Lee and Venus Raj in taping for the 2015 Bb. Pilipinas Primer that will be aired by ABS-CBN a week before the March 15 finals.

At any rate, the three former Miss Universe Philippines titleholders were able to handle the filming and production demands of the program.

Let’s watch out for the “On The Scene” videos of Miss Universe 2013 3rd Runner-up Ariella Arida after she finished filming some of her interviews during the Preliminary Competition of the 63rd Miss Universe Pageant in Doral, Miami. It’s interesting to see how she fared in the task, although I was told that she did very well overall.

The videos should be uploaded on the Miss Universe website and its corresponding YouTube channel anytime soon! 🙂
