It is interesting to note that – as early as March, 2019 – Miss Universe Philippines 2023 candidate Eileen Gonzales already wrote an email to the Miss Universe Organization expressing her wish and intent to be part of the pageant if only single mothers are allowed to join. Encouraged then by the inclusion (and acceptance) of transwoman Angela Ponce of Spain during Miss Universe 2018 in Bangkok, she messaged the organization, as follows:
”Good day! I am Eileen Gonzales, 22 years old from the Philippines. I have been joining beauty pageant since I was 15 years old and it has been my dream to have a crown and a title as a Beauty Queen. However, things started to change when I got pregnant 2 years ago and that made me lose hope at one point. I have been dreaming to join Binibining Pilipinas but sadly, they wouldn’t allow a single mother like me to join anymore because of your Qualifications. I have been also a Miss Universe fan. I watched Miss Universe last year and witnessed that you allowed a Transgender/Transwoman to join the pageant. That gave me hope, that maybe, or possibly in the future, you will also allow single mothers who are naturally born women to join your prestigious pageant.
I believe that Miss Universe’s Advocacy is about
Women Empowerment which means, that we, women, can empower each other regardless of our status in life.I believe that the courage of single mothers should be honored as it brings hope and inspiration to the next generation. I would be truly delighted and grateful if you consider this petition to allow single mothers to join Miss Universe. Praying for this to happen. By doing so, you will make light brighter at the end of the tunnel as we thrive to make our dreams come true.
Thank you so much for the time reading my mail! More power!”
Fast forward to 2023. She is now one of forty (40) ladies (and one of three mothers) vying for the title of Miss Universe Philippines 2023. It is a wish granted. It may have taken almost five years and one global pandemic to happen. But she is now realizing the dream that – if she works hard on – could be the ticket to be part of Miss Universe. Let’s see what fate has in store for her in the nationals, and if she has what it takes to achieve an historic win in Philippine pageantry.
Livelihood Sustenance and Cultural Preservation are the key areas of the transformational advocacy of Miss Universe Philippines 2023 candidate #KlyzaCastro.
Posted @withregram • @klyzacastro I am honored to have connected the Sangab Mandaya tribe with the Department of Labor and Employment’s Livelihood Assistance Program here in Davao Oriental. 🌾
Abaca farming is the number one source of income of the Mandaya tribe. The harvest period takes almost two years, and they extract the abaca fiber by hand. The abaca fiber is then sold to make fishing lines, rope, clothing, and furniture.
In our recent visit to the Mandaya tribe, the chieftain and her members, DOLE officers and I discussed the machinery and equipment needed to accelerate abaca production.
Abaca is also the main material used to make dagmay – a sacred, handwoven textile by the Mandaya that tells their history and folklore. We also donated beads and thread for their dagmay weaving as well as sacks of rice.
Sustenance of livelihood also means preservation of culture, and this is the core of my advocacy. 💚

#Guimaras doesn’t always get represented in national pageantry. But 2023 promises to change that. Vanessa Tse Wing is all set to bring pride to the island province in the big leagues after she made it as an Official Candidate of Miss Universe Philippines 2023.
Earlier this week, Vanessa paid a courtesy visit to Governor JC Rahman A. Nava, MD who warmly received her at the Provincial Capitol. The 26-year old beauty queen traces her roots in Buenavista, Guimaras where the relatives of her mother reside.
A graduate of Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management from Central Philippine University, this beauty holds a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning. She is currently working as a consultant for the Department of Agriculture and part-time instructor at Central Philippine University.
Good luck in the competition, Vanessa!

The candidates of Binibining Pilipinas 2023 participated in a bloodletting activity organized by the Philippine Red Cross – Quezon City Chapter at the Farmers Plaza Bazaar in Araneta City on February 18.
All candidates took part in the said activity, which aims to help replenish the supply in the country’s blood bank. According to Janice Melody Alfonso, RN, PRC Quezon City Chapter Administrator, the cancellation of blood donations due to the pandemic has caused blood supply to reach “insufficient and critical level”.
Binibinis who passed the blood screening were allowed to donate blood, while the rest were oriented by Red Cross personnel on the importance of donating blood.
For 2023, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. partners with more charitable organizations and institutions to engage candidates in different advocacy work.
