And so it came to pass.
Miss World 2013 Megan Young is back to the network where she originally started her showbiz career that was beautifully interrupted last 2013 when she joined and won Miss World Philippines before claiming the blue crown in Bali, Indonesia the same year.
Queen Megan signed a one-year exclusive contract with GMA-7 where she is initially slated to host “Starstruck” – the reality-based artista search where was once a part of as a contender – with actor Dingdong Dantes. After this, the buzz is that she will finally return to full-time acting via a lead role in a teleserye which is still under wraps for now.
Welcome back to Philippine showbiz, Queen Megan! 😀
Holy Tuesday. Day #2 of our Beauty Pageant Movies. I always enjoy black comedies. You can feel the bite and be entertained at the same time. This 1999 movie starred Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Denise Richards and Kirstie Alley where they play characters who follow the deadly beauty contest motto “you win any way you can . . . or you die trying.”
“Drop Dead Gorgeous” – the local boosters of Mount Rose, Minnesota proudly invites you to watch as their annual celebration of civic pride, wholesome achievement, teenage innocence and spirited camaraderie all go up in hilarious flames over the course of one vicious, nasty, back-stabbing beauty contest. A wickedly colorful, twisted comedy, Drop Dead Gorgeous probes the heart of a small Minnesota town where a teen beauty pageant has unleashed a fury of very unladylike behavior. – rottentomatoes.com

Miss Universe Philippines 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach enjoying Amorita Resort in Bohol for a Philippine Daily Inquirer Lifestyle photoshoot
Just very recently, Miss Universe Philippines 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach flew to Bohol to do a photoshoot for the Lifestyle section of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. She stayed at Amorita Resort located in Panglao Island. And for the uninitiated, Pia is a contributing stylist and beauty writer to Inquirer Lifestyle’s 2bU section so this trip was a reunion of sorts with her friends in the broadsheet’s 2BU Team. Do watch out for the final shots in an upcoming PDI issue.

Liesl Laurie (middle) was crowned Miss South Africa 2015 over the weekend. Flanking her are runners-up Ntsiki Mkhize and Refilwe Mthimunye.
And so, South Africa’s bet for both Miss Universe 2015 and Miss World 2015 has been crowned over the weekend. And she is considered a surprise winner by most.
Liesl Laurie, a 20 year old model and BCom general degree holder with the University of Johannesburg (Soweto Campus) hails from from El Dorado Park. She is the successor of Rolene Strauss who went on to win Miss World 2014 in London last December. Her two runners-up are top favorites Ntsiki Mkhize and Refilwe Mthimunye.
For this year’s Holy Week, I have decided to combine two (2) subject matters I love the most – beauty pageants and movies. So instead of going preachy or anything, I thought it best to make a daily feature on some of the films about beauty contests that I enjoyed watching in the past – guilty pleasure or not.
For Holy Monday, I have decided to start with “Miss Congeniality” (2000) – the light action-comedy that starred Sandra Bullock as FBI Agent Gracie Hart who went undercover as Miss New Jersey in the Miss United States competition to investigate and stop the reported bombing plans for the finals. What made the film more interesting for me was the presence of the delightful Candice Bergen. Watch the trailer now. If you’d like to see the whole movie, click on the link after the preview vid.
Starting today, March 30, I will be on Holy Week Break till Black Saturday, April 4. I really need a bit of uninterrupted “me” time and this period will work best – no scheduled pageant coverages for the media and everyone else is escaping the big city.
But don’t worry, dear readers. There will still be at least one (1) pageant-related post per day. These are the features I have already prepared ahead of time and scheduled to go live on the dot either at 12 midnight or 12 noon.
Come Wednesday, I will also be flying to my 2nd love of a city – Bangkok – just to spend a few days where I can recharge my mind and body. Perhaps, I can get an inspiration or two somewhere.
Normal operations will resume on Easter Sunday, April 5.
Just a short break from the daily grind for your sleepless blogger
Be productive and meditative in the upcoming days! 🙂
Left to right: 2nd Runner Up Vartika Singh, fbb Femina Miss India World Adita Arya and 1st Runner-Up Aafreen Rachel Vaz
Adita Arya was crowned fbb Femina Miss India 2015 last night and will represent her country in Miss World 2015 which will be hosted by a still-unannounced country. She outlasted all the early favorites that included Top 5 placer Deeksha Sauhal and eventual 1st Runner-Up Aafreen Rachel Vaz (this tall and gorgeous lady is giving me the shivers) who will compete in Miss International 2015 against our own Janicel Lubina.
Coming in as 2nd Runner-Up is the beautiful Vartika Singh (a deadringer for Padma Lakshmi) who will wear the sash of India in Miss Grand International 2015 happening in Bangkok later this year. Tanya Hope completed the top quintet going into the final deliberations for the crown.
All in all, I would say that the two runners-up have pretty good chances of doing well in their respective international competitions. While Vartika appears to be middling in height, she has a knockout face that could make up for the shorter frame.
Congratulations to all the winners! 🙂
P.S. Aditi Arya is 5’11”. Aafreen Rachel Vaz is 6 feet tall. Vartika is 5’6″.
Miss Universe Paulina Vega during the finals of Puteri Indonesia 2015
63rd Miss Universe Paulina Vega went to Djakarta, Indonesia to crown the next Miss Universe representative of the country. But more than the actual appearance during the national finals, it was the whole trip that the Colombian beauty enjoyed to the fullest. She was given the VIP treatment all the way, and literally had many individuals at her beck and call for everything that she needed – from the most opulent suite to daily designer gowns and dresses. And the girl is definitely loving all the attention, as can be seen in the video below which shows all the highlights of her trip in just under three minutes.

Bb. Pilipinas 1991 Winners (left to right): 2nd Runner-up Jenette Fernando, Bb. Pilipinas Maja Ma. Lourdes Gonzalez, Bb. Pilipinas Universe Anjanette Abayari, Bb. Pilipinas International Ma. Patricia Betita and 1st Runner-up Selina Manalad (Photo credit: Tony Paat)
1991 was a relatively tumultuous Bb. Pilipinas year, owing to the dethronement of Anjanette Abayari as Bb. Pilipinas Universe. Bb. Pilipinas International Ma. Patricia Benito was offered to replace her but politely declined and opted to stick it out with a Miss International stint in Japan. As a result, Bb. Pilipinas Maja Ma. Lourdes ‘Alu’ Gonzalez was next in line and went on to represent the country in that year’s Miss Universe held in Las Vegas and won by Lupita Jones of Mexico. 1st Runner-Up Selina Manalad found herself assuming the Maja Internacional mission, which elevated 2nd Runner-Up Jenette Fernando to the former’s spot.
Anjanette’s American citizenship was the culprit. So instead of sulking with the turn of events, she decided to give in to the call of showbiz opportunities which led her to becoming a sex symbol, a leading lady in action and comedy movies and later peaked when she was tapped to star as “Darna” in the superheroine’s long list of remakes.
Anjanette during her Abunda & Aquino Tonight guesting
After Anjanette left the country to go back to the US, her popularity went downhill. But then again, she wanted a more fulfilling life and thought it was the best move to take at the time. The public completely forgot about her until an incident in Guam back in 1999 propelled her back in the news, but for uglier reasons. She was charged with the possession of shabu at the island’s airport and could no longer re-enter the Philippines due to a 3-year probation rule that was lifted last 2003.
Somehow, that dark moment in her life served as the turning point from where she made a final resolve to make good as a person. While she also had quite a rocky relationship with ex-boyfriend David Bunevacz, all is water under the bridge. She is happily married now, with two adorable sons – Aiden and Ashton. Outside of an intrigue that linked her with Manny Pacquiao, all’s well on the domestic front for this lovely lady who visited the country last February to shoot an international movie in our shores.
Hi! Norman here. When I'm not working, I spend most of my free time planning on daily blogs. If you will notice, I always make sure that a fresh topic comes out everyday - not an easy thing to do but it's all good. Thanks for dropping by and enjoy the visit!
