There will only be a Top 12 this year
Construction of the stage inside MOA Arena
Outside the Provincial Tour and Pre-Pageant activities of the 65th Miss Universe (the candidates are split between Davao and Nasugbu, Batangas today
), here are other updates you might want to know.
Instead of a Top 15, only a Top 12 will be called to the first cut during the finals on January 30. This will make the competition for one of the spots more intense, I must say. So the popularity votes through Vodi (which will start on January 23) is very crucial. Talk about getting just eleven (11) ladies with the highest composite scores plus one (1) who will sneak through using the back door.
In other news, construction of the stage inside the Mall of Asia Arena is in full swing. The workers have only a week to finish the set for the January 26 Preliminaries and the January 30 Finals. Keep in mind that work cannot be done between the 27th and 29th because of nonstop rehearsals happening at the venue. Are you excited, ticket holders? And oh, by the way, there is still no advice as to the sale of tickets for Preliminary Competition (which will also include the National Costume Parade). My inbox is flooded with questions and my answer is dependent on what the organizers will give me. Stay tuned for this.
Lastly, international singing superstar Flo Rida will be the guest performer for the finals. I know that you are expecting someone like Bruno Mars to do the singing, but it is what it is. Flo Rida it will be.
Gotta go now, my head is on a tailspin. Every single day. But I’m loving every minute of it. 🙂

The Rise Against Hunger
Charity Event of the 65th Miss Universe – held at the Taft Ballroom of Conrad Manila – was a huge success with 56 of the 86 candidates completing the filling and measuring of one hundred (100) boxes of food packs to be given to the recipient-beneficiaries (pregnant and underprivileged women) of the organization along with Pass It Forward Foundation.
Never mind that they stood for hours measuring rice, yeast and all – the 56 contestants who participated had a lot of fun doing the task. After all, if you want to be Miss Universe, being #ConfidentlyBeautifulWithAHeart is a must!
Excellent job, ladies! 👍🏽

My photos with some of the 65th Miss Universe contestants
Before my blog/timeline/gallery start to get flooded by the two simultaneous 65th Miss Universe events for today, let me share normannorman.com’s #FavoredFifteen as of January 18, 2017.
These ladies are my running favorites for Miss Universe. I arranged them alphabetically (by country) first so as to give me that extra leeway to analyze them further:
Argentina 🇦🇷 Estefania Bernal
Australia 🇦🇺 Caris Tiivel
Belgium 🇧🇪 Stephanie Geldhof
Brazil 🇧🇷 Raissa Santana
Colombia 🇨🇴 Andrea Tovar
Costa Rica 🇨🇷 Carolina Rodriguez
Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 Sal Garcia
France 🇫🇷 Iris Mittenaere
Indonesia 🇮🇩 Kezia Warouw
Netherlands 🇳🇱 Zoey Ivory
Philippines 🇵🇭 Maxine Medina
Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 Brenda Azaria
Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 Hawa Kamara
Thailand 🇹🇭 Chalita Suansane
Venezuela 🇻🇪 Mariam Habach
For sure, the list will still change. Once my confidence goes into full gear, I shall arrange them in the order that I want them to stack up in the rankings.
18 of the 65th Miss Universe contestants during the Swimsuit Presentation
Bolivia, Belize, Belgium and Barbados
At first, it raised the eyebrows of many watchers – both pageant followers and instant MU-converts
– to actually see all the 65th Miss Universe contestants wearing one-piece numbers during the Swimsuit Presentation held at JPark Island Resort in Cebu. Gone were the days when only the more religion-restricted delegates would opt for the same instead of the more usual two-piece swimwears that are favored by many to emphasize the curves they have worked hard for before reaching the point of competition. But hey, if it’s something to somehow minimize the protests of women’s groups like Gabriela, then so be it. Actually, I liked some of the pieces except for the selections with tacky phrases emblazoned on the breast area or big bold numbers that make them look like members of an athletic swimming team.
Here now are videos of the event. You must have already seen them elsewhere, but for the purpose of discussion, I am posting them again.
Then tell me who really nailed their respective turns onstage. Keep in mind that there are no scores given here. The January 26 Preliminaries at MOA Arena will be the time and place for that.

During the Governor’s Ball
This post is a bit belated since the Governor’s Ball already happened last night and the 65th Miss Universe updates are fiercely at top speed.
At any rate, click on the videos below to see the candidates during their red-carpet entrance at the SMX Convention Center.
There are small nuances among the ladies that you can see if you watch more keenly.

The ladies of the 65th Miss Universe woke up bright and early this morning for a good reason – it’s the day of Swimsuit Presentation at JPark Island Resort in Cebu. So after landing in the Queen City of the South, they were brought straight to the venue where they met their little sisters – a throwback to past pageant memories when little girls actually represented each of the delegates. They even had crowns on top of their heads! It was fun-filled for everyone.
But right after the pleasantries, they went to hair and make-up for the Swimsuit Presentation which – quite interestingly – had all of them in one-piece swimwear for a change.
Below are some of the photos from the event. More to follow soon!
Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach during her arrival at the Governor’s Ball
It may cost a lot to actually attend the 65th Miss Universe Governor’s Ball, but the 18k/per plate is going to a good cause – the Pass It Forward Foundation – which makes the night of wining and dining with the candidates a truly memorable evening for everyone.
Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach made her grand entrance alongside Gov Luis Chavit Singson/MUO President Paula Shugart and from there, the tone is set for a charity dinner that is both glittery and eventful. A lot of the guests were awe-inspired the contestants when they were presented onstage as a big group. And the minute they mixed it up with the attendees, the affair got even more exciting. Just sitting next to the most beautiful women in the Universe is reason enough to stay starstruck and tongue-tied for some.
There really is no better way than to officially welcome the ladies in a ball that brings out the best from everyone – inside and out – and for a worthy charity at that plus a filling dinner of Salmon Tartar, Prawns Catalan and Slow-cooked Angus Beef Brisket!
So this may be a delayed exclamatory statement to end this feature but, “let the beauty battle begin!”
