Starting this week, the Official Candidates of Miss Earth 2011 will start arriving in Manila. With the finals scheduled on December 3, 2011 at the University of the Philippines Theatre, the ladies competing for this year’s crown will have a busy 2 1/2 weeks of glorious stay (and royal treatment) in the country, peppered with a long string of environment-related activities on top of the actual beauty competition.
Originally scheduled to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, the perennial flooding problems in the Land of Smiles forced the Thai organizers to back out of hosting duties. But as they say, the show must go on and the Philippines is all too willing to take charge of everything so as to insure continuity of the decade-long pageant.
Reigning titleholder Nicole Faria of India has been busy as a bee shuttling around Asia together with her court of elemental beauties, while spearheading a number of charitable tasks for the environment – most noteworthy of which was the flood relief operations recently conducted in Bangkok.
Among this year’s hopefuls, there will be particular interest in: 1) Miss Sweden Renate Cerljen who was in the Top 15 of Miss Universe 2009; 2) Miss Venezuela Caroline Medina, a ward of Osmel Sousa who won Reina Hispanoamerica 2010; 3) Miss Costa Rica Mariela Aparicio, a Top 15 finisher of Miss International 2010; and 4) Miss Aruba Melissa Lacle, an alumna of Miss Universe 2006.
