Angela Visser before competing in and winning Miss Universe 1989 in Cancun, Mexico
Angela then, Angela now
Miss Universe 1989 Angela Visser is one of the more popular and fulfilled winners of the title. Aside from being the only Dutch titleholder to date, she has become a favorite commentator of the Miss Universe Organization in several editions of the pageant. She has also parlayed her win to a modestly successful career in Hollywood. To top it all off, she married a wonderful guy – Phil Missig – with whom she bore a daughter, Amelie Rose. Her married and family life remains solid up to now, as you can tell in the photo below. And in her Facebook account, she is proud of being a soccer stay-at-home mom.
Let’s reminisce on her winning moment in Cancun, Mexico 26 years ago.

Miss Universe Netherlands 2011 Kelly Weekers
Kelly Weekers, aged 21 and representing Limburg was crowned Miss Universe Netherlands 2011 together with two other ladies – Jill de Robles and Jill Duijves – who were chosen as Miss World Netherlands and Miss Earth Netherlands, respectively.
Kelly, very tall at 1.80m, is currently in her Junior year taking up Psychology at the University of Maastricht. She started working as a fashion model at the age of 15, but aims to become a Master in Child and Youth Psychopathology in the future. At the moment, though, she is neck-deep in preparations for her trip to Sao Paulo, Brazil next month.
Top 3 Dutch beauties for 2011 (L-R): Jill de Robles (Miss Netherlands World 2011), Kelly Weekers (Miss Netherlands Universe 2011) and Jill Duijves (Miss Netherlands Earth 2011)
How far will fate bring Kelly in the competition? Hard to tell if she will do an Angela Visser or a Pauline Huizinga or at least a Nancy Neede, given the outstandingly tough field, but she’ll definitely give it her best shot.
Team Netherlands will face Team Spain in today's World Cup final. Are they ready to win their first?
Miss Universe-Netherlands 2010 Desiree van den Berg: will she carry a Dutch victory to the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant next month?
Sportswriters are one in saying that there is something new in this year’s World Cup final scheduled today in South Africa. Finalists Spain and the Netherlands have never met in any World Cup final. It’s Spain’s first final appearance. On the other hand, the Dutch contingent will be trooping to the endgame for a 3rd time after near-wins in 1974 and 1978. Third time lucky for the Netherlands? We’ll see…
In the meantime, Miss Universe-Netherlands 2010 was crowned last week. Desiree van den Berg, a 23 year-old student from Santpoort studying Fertility Medicine at the University of Amsterdam, will be wearing the country’s sash as she vies for the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas next month. She hopes to become the 2nd Dutch winner after Angela Visser in 1989.
There is no direct correlation whatsoever between the World Cup and the Miss Universe Pageant. But if luck dwells on the side of the Dutch and wins soccer’s most prestigious trophy, what are the chances of Desiree duplicating that triumph in beauty pageant’s most prestigious crown? Whimsical me thinks that Donald Trump might consider it newsworthy to a certain extent, but no more than that. So it’s all in the hands of Desiree van den Berg to come up with a fierce gameplan before flying to Sin City.
Win or not, Desiree van den Berg will always have a steady career on her back. She is studying to become a Doctor.
Succes gewenst, Desiree! 😉
