I am loving the National Costume of Miss Universe Nepal Anshika Sharma – an ode to mountaineers who have conquered Mount Everest.
This modern ensemble is not complicated but very reflective of one of the country’s contributions to the Universe.
It takes a village to build a National Costume. And nowhere is this more evident than what Miss Universe Malaysia Francisca Luhong James will wear for the 69th Miss Universe – a #kampungku or translated from Bahasa Malaysia as “my hometown”.
She is literally bringing a representation of her village to the competition. Wow! 😯

You have the shortest travel time to Hollywood, Florida among the candidates – less than 90 minutes by plane from Mississippi. But you have one of the most demanding responsibilities in the 69th Miss Universe – a 23 year-old big sister to 73 delegates.
The one country gunning for a back-to-back win in the 69th Miss Universe is South Africa. They were close to achieving a three-peat before, if you will recall.
And Miss South Africa 2020 Natasha Joubert is not leaving any stone unturned in her mission. Never mind if Venezuela has already done it first. The important thing is to win.

Congratulations to the two Filipino-Americans (left photo) who did well in the recently-concluded Miss Washington USA 2021 state pageant.
Chrissy Brodie was named top winner and will represent the state of Washington in the next Miss USA.

Filipino-Americans have done decently well in US pageants. Back in 1998, an 18 year-old from Charleston, South Carolina bested all the youthful state candidates to win Miss Teen USA 1998. Her name is Vanessa Joy Minnillo.
Vanessa was born at USAF Clark Regional Medical Center in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines. Her father, Vincent Charles Minnillo, is an American citizen from Cleveland, Ohio of Italian and Irish descent, while her mother, Helen Ramos Bercero, is from Manila, Philippines. Minnillo has an adopted brother who is two years older. Her father moved the family frequently because of his service in the Air Force. She lived in Washington, California, Nevada, Florida, Germany and Japan and attended eight different schools in nine years. Minnillo’s parents separated in 1983 and were divorced in 1986.

Anyways, Vanessa married singer Nick Lachey last 2011 after years of a more-on-less-off relationship. They have been blessed with three children ever since.

If for any reason, the winner cannot fulfill her duties, the 1st runner-up will take her place…
We always hear the statement above before a new Miss Universe is crowned. And it was back in 2002 when the 1st Runner-Up Justine Pasek of Panama took over Oxana Fedorava of Russia.
Now over at Miss USA, the line of succession is more standard (and non-complicated) in practice.
From 1967 onwards, the first runner-up automatically replaced any Miss USA titleholder who won the Miss Universe pageant. Here are the ones who benefitted, in reverse order:

Brandi Sherwood of Idaho – 1997 (she was also crowned Miss Teen USA 1989 prior)

Today, I introduce you to my guest writer, Andrea Delgado, who is no stranger to beauty contests. We share the same passion in pageantry, as she has joined several competitions before like Miss Philippines Earth 2016, Miss Global Philippines 2017 and – most recently – Jewel of the Philippines. This year, we both got involved in Miss Scuba Philippines – she as one of the organizers, me as a media partner.
From time to time, Andrea will contribute articles in between my regular blog inputs. Let us welcome her in our midst. Below is her first contribution.
The 2018 beauty pageant season will grace upon us real soon. And with several victories that the country continues to earn these past years, it is imperative to add value and elevate the standards in our aspiring beauty queens.
Maureen Montagne is a Filipino- American from Chandler, Arizona who joined Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013 – where she won as a Runner Up, Miss USA 2015 – where she ranked in the Top 15, and Miss World America – a 1st Runner Up finisher just this 2017. Looks-wise alone, she should undeniably be part of the 2018 Roster of Filipino Beauty Queens. She may have been part of national pageants outside the Philippines, but it has always been her advocacy to promote her roots as a Filipina by taking part in events that encourage the appreciation for our Filipino language, culture and arts.
Maureen is perhaps molded to be a crowned beauty queen. She has been modeling since the age of 5, involved in dance classes in her university in Arizona, and of course, her Filipino heritage for which she has a deep-rooted affection for pageantry. Valued supporters believe that a regal aura, maintained physique and prior experience will be her advantage should she once again venture into the industry.
Will we be able to witness this 5’7” Fil-American’s years of hard work and preparations in the coming year? What will be the impact of a combination of Arizona and the Philippines in this scorching beauty? Most importantly, will she meet the residency requirement of the organizers on time?

And at the end of the clip, they asked a question as to where you want the next edition to be held. True, the Philippines is being talked about as the possible venie for the 66th. But if talks do not prosper as expected, where will it go next?
