The Philippines is ranked 4th in terms of number of wins in Miss Universe with four (4), 2nd only in Miss International even with six (6) and a tie for 18th-37th places with so many other countries in Miss World with one (1) each. Outside the homegrown Miss Earth where Filipinas are comfortably leading the way with four (4) victories, it is in the Malaysia-based Miss Tourism International competition where we are lording it over with five (5) titleholders since it started only during the mid-1990s. The reigning titleholder herself is Mutya Pilipinas 2019 Cyrille Payumo who saved the country from a complete shutout in international wins from recognized pageants last year.
To the eyes of some, MTI may only be a second-tier international beauty event. But with its relative consistency of mounting the finals year after year, good Tourism thrust and a reputable organization headed by Tan Sri Datu Danny Ooi, it deserves due respect from the global pageant community.
I wanted so much to share videos of all five ladies, but I could no longer find one with Maria Esperanza Manzano from 2000. Below are the late Rizzini Alexis Gomez, Angeli Dione Gomez, Jannie Alipo-on and Cyrille Payumo.
Happy Easter, dear readers!
In line with this, let’s not forget the other MTI editions that Philippines won:
Miss Tourism International 1997 (Macau) – Joanne Santos
Miss Tourism International 1998 (Macau) – Yuni Que
Miss Tourism International 2001 (Anatolia, Turkey) – Michelle Reyes
Miss Tourism International 2002 (Black Sea, Ukraine) – Kristine Alzar
Unofficially, we have 9 crowns for Miss Tourism International.
@ EQNX Is that earlier organization the same as current Tan Sri Danny Ooi’s?
Hi Flor, I’m not sure about that matter but I think they are break-away versions, not under D’Touch (Tan Sri Danny Ooi’s) edition.
There’s even a Sri Lankan version, as cited here: http://www.oocities.org/zekezoeh/links_misstourismmalaysia.html
Some of the most notable crossovers from this pageant (or subsidiaries):
Nathalie Den Dekker of The Netherlands – Miss International 2013 1st Runner Up
Half Latina and one Pia’s beties Urvashi Rautela – Miss Universe India 2015
Monika Radulovic – Miss Universe 2015 Top 5 Finalist
Julia Horta – Miss Brasil 2019
Stepping stone din ng mga MU hopefuls ang pageant na yan!
Look at Monica Radulovic and Julia Horta on that picture! Ibang-iba na image nila when they joined MU!
I had just watched Geography Now (YouTube channel) episode on Malaysia. 🙂
Tan Sri Datu Danny Ooi also put together MTQYI…. Leren…..He changed the brand, Mr. Tinio?
For the sake of our commentators who might not be aware and therefore dismiss Malaysia in favor of more flashy-exotic ASEAN neighbors, and NOT confining discussion to British colonial rule, orangutans, and the Sabah Claim, Malaysians (largely) reveled the 2018 ending of the decades-long ruling party with the return to power of Mahatir bin Mohammad (in his 90’s!) who recently (last year?) warned Filipinas of the perils of falling into a China debt trap. Also, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who was friend to Sen. Benigno Aquino. Jr. (+),… and wife Wan Azizah who came to the country on his behalf to pay respects at the La Salle Greenhills leg of former Pres. Corazon Aquino’s wake…. Anwar, I think, was under detention at the time, though I am unsure if it was Najib Razak, the PM who allegedly struck deals with China., or Mahatir who had him arrested.
That being said, my blabbermouth will hopefully escape the attention of CCP internet trolls now combing virtual clouds for CCP virus (aka, CoV19) accusations against Pres. Xi Jing Pi. I hope I did not misspell. Otherwise, I’m toast.
The Camp, if contemplating foreign expansion, can consider Malaysia. Samantha Katie James, Rachel Peters’ good friend at the time of MU 2017, can be their first recruit. Malaysia also has Michelle Yeoh, David Golding, and a top runway-editorial model named Tan Mang Ling.
Henry Golding, Flor 🙂
Cyrille should join BB. Pilipinas 2021
