Yukimi Matsuo of Japan will wear the above in Moscow for MU2013

Japan and Thailand are two of my most-awaited National Costumes for Miss Universe. They always manage to surprise us year after year. And 2013 won’t be any different.
In fact, the Miss Universe Japan organizers have already revealed what Yukimi Matsuo will wear in a special presscon held last week. While the design remains traditional, they have managed to put in some creative tweaks that capture the essence of the modern Japanese woman. Oh and by the way, their rep wears it so beautifully. She’s like a living geisha doll.

The design of the Thai NC for MU2013

Au Bah - the inspiration for the Thai NC.
Meanwhile, the individuals behind Miss Universe Thailand have already announced the winner of their design competition for the national costume to be worn by Chalita Yaemwannang in MU2013. A Fine Arts major at the Silapakorn University clinched the win and he will now collaborate with the designers for the final execution.
The design is a step back in terms of theatrical effect, but it will surely make the wearer look more stunning. The inspiration, according to my good friend Joey M. in Bangkok, is the au bah or garlands of flowers hanging in mid-air. If done properly, the finished product should still be a standout once paraded in Moscow come November.
I wonder which other national candidates will up the ante with their NCs this year. š
