A friend suggested that I watch ‘Game of Thrones’ after he downloaded the first few episodes on his iPad and generously shared with me. I’ve been hooked ever since and can’t wait to watch the next ones.
For the uninitiated, here’s a summary of the same from Wikipedia:
A Game of Thrones is the first book in A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of epic fantasy novels by American author George R. R. Martin. It was first published on 6 August 1996. The novel won the 1997 Locus Award, and was nominated for both the 1998 Nebula Award and the 1997 World Fantasy Award. The novella Blood of the Dragon, comprising the Daenerys Targaryen chapters from the novel, won the 1997 Hugo Award for Best Novella.
The novel lends its name to several spin-off items based on the novels, including a trading card game, board game, and role-playing game. In November 2009, HBO completed filming of a pilot episode for the television adaptation. This was followed by a ten-episode full season, which premiered in April 2011. On 2 January 2011 the novel became a New York Times bestseller, hitting the paperback list at #25.
So far, this is one of the best adaptations of book to screen I think I’ve ever seen. Martin’s books are overly packed with internal monologues, backstories and general minutia, and to translate that nearly seamlessly to screen, keeping all the necessary story beats as well as taking the time to flesh out all those characters, is quite a feat. I even love the added scenes for a more cinematic-like production.
Even knowing how the first book plays out, I’m always hyped for the next episode! Thankfully, it’s already been picked up for a second season, so we’ll at least get to see A Clash of Kings adapted as well.
The TV epic series stars Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, Mark Addy, Lena Headey, Michelle Fairley, Jason Momoa and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The four directors collaborating are Tim Van Patten, Brian Kirk, Daniel Minahan and Alan Taylor.
So are you hooked yet? If not, then give one episode a try. 😉
