How I wish Miss Universe 2015 would already be showing signs of life by now. There are not so wild talks anymore that the host is likely to be Shanghai. But then again, such buzz remains unconfirmed and still floating in mid-air.
That would have been a small birthday wish add-on – to get a more concrete statement from Miss Universe Organization about this year’s host. Even if the pageant will still remain January, 2016 in schedule. I wish for something clearer about the 64th Miss Universe. 😉
Miss World 2007 Zhang Zilin – China’s first winner of the blue crown – remains as beautiful, if not more beautiful than the day she won in Sanya. And on the cover of Elle Magazine, her captivatingly quiet beauty is made more prominent by the refreshingly subtle poses that doesn’t seem to show any signs of seven-year aging (of course, I am suspending disbelief owing to the wonders of Photoshop).
But still, I find her far more appealing than compatriot Wenxia Yu who was named Miss World five years after her victory.
How about you, dear readers? 🙂
Let’s be honest. I think there’s no big contest here in terms of their being magazine cover girls.
Miss Universe titleholders are definitely way ahead in this regard. First of all, they always find their way splashed on the cover of so many international magazines. Google one name and you will end up with so many choices. They are better-networked in different countries, despite being mostly in Latin America.
On the other hand, there seems to be a dearth of magazine covers for Miss World winners. Except for our Miss World 2013 Megan Young who has bannered quite a number of publications, the rest are quite hard to find, futile even. In fact, the image of MW2010 Alexandria Mills below is not genuine but just a simple pageant fan art output. Plus, MW2012 Wenxia Yu’s turn had to be shared with former Miss World Indonesia Vania Larissa.
So who make better cover girls? Well, the world is a glossier oyster for Donald Trump’s winners. Don’t you agree? 😉
Miss World 2013 Megan Young will host, together with Frankie Cena. And if we are to follow the presence of both Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu and Miss World Oceania 2013 Erin Holland in the English Riviera, there is also an excellent chance that they will be guest-performing one of their operatic pieces.
Who will Mr. World 2012/13 Francisco Escobar Parra turn over the responsibilities to? We shall definitely find out tonight! 😀
Prior to her working trip in Jakarta, Miss World 2013 Megan Young made a brief stop in Hong Kong where, aside from doing some fund-raising for the ST Yolanda victims, she found time to spend one day with Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu.
It’s so nice to see the ladies together in their most relaxing moments and building their friendship that started in Bali.
By the way, our Megan will be arriving in Manila anytime soon so get ready to welcome her back. She will take part in some charity initiatives sponsored by Miss World Organization. 😉

Do you know the feeling you get when something BIG and wonderful is about to happen and still, you’re not sure how to react to it? That was what happened to me last night. All the signs, all the positive developments and all the predictions have collectively pointed to Megan Young winning the Philippines’ first Miss World crown days before the finals night itself. And when she was actually called by Julia Morley as Miss World 2013, I wanted to shout to the top of my lungs. I also wanted to hug the person next to me (my mom, in this case). I did all that. But I started sobbing with a smile on my face first. The tears started flowing down my cheeks as if I had actually been in Megan’s place. The last time we won a title as big as Miss World (and that would be Miss Universe) was 40 years ago (Margie Moran) when I was just beginning to take interest in beauty contests.
And when host Mylene Klass interviewed a still-visibly stunned, shaking and tearful Megan while seating on her throne, one of the latter’s answers really caught my attention.
“…and I promise to be the best Miss World ever…”
Strong words. A strong promise. And I bet she will deliver on that commitment. And Julia Morley’s smile will have meant that the rightful winner has just been crowned.
From now till somewhere around the tail-end of 2014, Megan Young’s life will dramatically change. International travels. Fund-raising activities. Charity visits. Personal appearances. And a flat in London.
Just like her predecessor Wenxia Yu who has grown close to Julia, our Megan will most likely find a second mother of sorts in the pageant matriarch. Together, they will lead a purposeful year that will definitely open more doors for new challenges to take and opportunities to consider.

In closing, let me take this space to formally write my apology to Miss World 2013 for having doubted her resolve to seriously joining a beauty competition. I even tagged her as someone who cried wolf when she was neither here nor there in enlisting for Bb. Pilipinas, not knowing that fate has a greater plan for her somewhere else. I know that she has the kind heart to understand where I was foolishly coming from at the time.
Left to right: sister Lauren, brother Victor and mother Vicky celebrate Megan's victory with Julia Morley in the background.
Now I know Megan better. After what I have witnessed from the time she won Miss World Philippines 2013 to her eventful weeks of stay in Bali all the way to becoming the first Filipina to wear the blue crown, there is no doubt that she is indeed poised to become the best Miss World ever.

Long live the new Queen! 😀
The blue crown has a new wearer, and she is our very own Megan Young !
At the end of highly-anticipated and hotly-contested finals held inside the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center in Bali, Indonesia, Miss World 2013 has been elected from among 127 contenders. Megan Young of the Philippines makes history as her country’s first Miss World and the Asean region as well.
Coming in as 1st Princess is Marine Lorphelin of France, with 2nd Princess honors going to Carranza Shooter of Ghana . The remaining two ladies who made it to Top 5 are Spain and Brazil. Maroua Kharbouch of Gibraltar was declared People’s Champion and was included in the magic circle as the 6th finalist.
With so many special award winners announced for the pageant’s exciting pre-pageant activities, the top-placers (already revealed online yesterday afternoon) in Beach Fashion, Top Model, Talent, Sports Challenge, Multimedia and the all-important Beauty with a Purpose took their spots centerstage with a well-deserved inclusion in the Top 20. People’s Champion winner Gibraltar had to wait till the Top 5 was announced before locking in her inclusion.
Congratulations to all the winners but most especially to our MEGAN YOUNG! MABUHAY KANG TALAGA! 😀
P.S. Your blogger is crying like a baby. And I’m not ashamed. Not one bit. I love you, Megan! 🙂
With the Opening Ceremony of Miss World 2013 happening tomorrow (early evening), our Megan is spending time familiarizing herself with all the candidates. With 122 ladies to get acquainted with, it helps that she has the initiative to socialize (like a butterfly) and constantly mingle with everyone. The flexible lady that she is, her aura can easily switch from hip to cool to elegant to funny in a flash so the girls can easily relate, regardless of the culture/origins they represent. 😉

And when the Top 13 was filtered to just five (5), only Megan and Zahra were left garbed in blue. At that point, I was dead sure that Megan would outlast the competition. Honestly, I never considered (the over-performing) Zahra for one of the last two spots after she over-presented her evening gown (and later stretched her final Q&A beyond our patience for wordiness). So that left our new winner as the only one in a color that hues close to the Miss World crown. Sure, Janicel Lubina gave me a tinge of nervousness going into the final Q&A. But I was ready to bet everything for Megan. All in.

And since it is now crystal clear that Megan Young will be making that trip to Indonesia, I can already see her possibly wearing another blue gown or another Eric delos Santos blue-colored creation or the same blue gown all over again.
Blue is it. And I’m quite sure blue will be it. 😉
