When Gabriela Isler was announced as Miss Universe 2013 last November 9 in Moscow, she initially thought that her country name was being called as 1st Runner-Up. Her first reaction was to show genuine happiness for good friend Patricia Rodriguez of Spain whom she assumed won the whole thing. A split second later, she opened her mouth so wide upon seeing Olivia Culpo approaching her side and putting a crown on her head. It was then that the fantastic news sunk in her system. She indeed was the winner.
This short anecdote is a reflection of the new Miss Universe’s warmth and sincerity as an individual. Honestly, it doesn’t happen very often that we get to see a Venezuelan so genial and sisterly (I can name Miss Earth 2005 Alexandra Braun as another one). We all know by now that Molly (her nickname) is very good friends with both 1st Runner-Up Patricia and 3rd Runner-Up Ariella Arida. You can see in the Top 5 (where the three are standing side-by-side) that they are very happy for each other and that the hand clasps in between are firm and not tentative.
By becoming the 7th Venezuelan to win Miss Universe, Gabriela has added another feather to the already filled cap of Osmel Sousa. And the latter must be grinning from ear-to-ear as if to indicate that he has already forgiven Donald Trump for the snub of Marelisa Gibson in 2010 and the non-advancement to Top 5 of Vanessa Goncalvez in 2011.
Molly may not be the most youthful-looking Miss Universe ever, but she certainly could become the friendliest one to date. And if not for my deep-seated desire to see only our bet or Miss Spain as winner, I would have shouted for joy when she was crowned. At any rate, I have now moved on.
I can certainly see this Miss Guárico enjoying and giving her best to a one-year reign. 🙂
