In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of her winning the country’s very first Miss Universe title last July 19, 1969, I am sharing with you the full video of the 1969 Miss Universe where our very own Gloria Diaz made the entire country proud when she defeated 60 other delegates on the way to the top.

It always gives me a nice feeling to reminisce about the good old pageant days when Miss Universe was still at its most traditional best. While I may not have been born yet back in 1963, that edition of our favorite beauty competition had Miss Philippines Lalaine Betia Bennett (of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya
) figuring out well in the proceedings and eventually notching a 3rd Runner-Up placement to Ieda Maria Vargas of Brazil.
Some of you might be wondering why there are ladies from US states mixed with the international entries above. FYI, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe used to be conducted just several days apart so the overlap allows the American contestants spending time and mixing with the foreign delegates.
I was just thinking about the possibilities of having a modern Miss Universe with all the frills of the olden days. But then again, the youth of today will most likely get bored with the slow-paced tradition compared to how Donald Trump has managed to make it evolve into the more high-tech, exciting and skin-baring conduct we are seeing now.
Many thanks to Mr. Tony Paat for keeping (and preserving) all these pageant mementos of days gone by. 🙂
