The #MutyaNgPilipinas2022 Official Candidates were presented to the members of the Press at the Bay City Ballroom of Citadines Bay City Manila. Wearing identical blue two-piece swimwears by Sony Boy Mindo, the ladies took turns in doing their spotlight moves for all attending guests.

Chosen as Darlings of the Press during the #MutyaNgPilipinas2022 Press Presentation are Katherine Topsnik of Guindulman, Bohol, Bea Margarett Madea of Muntinlupa and Iona Gibbs of Bataan

Mary Justine Teng: Ready as she’ll ever be

Mary Justine Teng of Muntinlupa City is riding on the wave of positivity in her bid to do well in the 50th Mutya ng Pilipinas. After winning the Darling of the Press award during the Press Presentation, she went on to be named as one of the Sol Y Viento Ambassadors before turning in a good presentation that was awarded 2nd Runner-Up in the Best in Terno Competition held at Ascott BGC. She also did one better for Designer Sony Boy Mindo who was chosen as one of the Top 5 Designers with her modern traditional garb made out of indigenous materials.

I was able to catch Justine right after the awarding of the Best in Terno Competition winners last Tuesday night. She was in high spirits and wants to carry the momentum all the way to Sunday’s Finals.

Pearl Hung: The Millenial Entrepreneur aims for Miss World Philippines 2018

The Final Screening for Miss World Philippines 2018 will be happening soon (at Resorts World Manila next week, I was told), and one of the ladies who will definitely show up for the selection is a smart and lovely lass from Palawan who is being (hash)tagged as The Millenial Entrepreneur owing to her established track record as a Youth Spokesperson of the City Government of Puerto Princesa and the Department of Education to inspire the youth.

But more than this, 24 year-old Pearl Hung (she is British/Chinese/Filipino in ancestry and orphaned at the age of 3) owns a business – MLM – that allows her to engage in various inspirational speaking engagements to large groups where she motivates young minds into becoming their own boss.

Pearl sees Miss World Philippines as a bigger platform where she can widen her reach. Her goal is to share the mindset of being an Entrepreneur. With 15 million unemployed new graduates nowadays, her advocacy is to lessen the statistic by encouraging Filipinos to have the same focus and build opportunities for growth.

She could easily be a woman whose purpose is empowerment.

All in one frame now, the three winners of the Regional Costume Competition of Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017


Last night’s Regional Costume Competition of Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017 at The Plaza of Resorts World Manila showed how world-class the talent of the Filipino designers are with the thirty candidates parading in attires that could only be described as inspiring and awe-inspiring.

Designer Louis Pangilinan was the big winner as his creations won top spot and 1st Runner-Up courtesy of Crystal Rosehelly Alday of Camarines Sur and Alyssa Joreen Reyes of Lemery, Batangas respectively. 2nd Runner-Up Nicole Kristel Losloso of Southern Luzon was dressed up in a painstakingly finished output from Quezon-based Jojo Alidio.

They finished on top, but I have to doff my hat as well to the other creative geniuses who shared their talents like Edwin Uy, Leo Almodal, Sony Boy Mindo, Manny Halasan, Rian Fernandez, Jun-G Candelario, John Cliff, Cheistopher Ledesma and more.

I know that the hardworking Designers who created the fabulous National Costumes for the Binibinis of Bb. Pilipinas 2017 toiled on their respective works so it is but fitting that we give credit to each one of them.

65th Miss Universe | Which were and who wore the Best Ternos?

The three best Ternos in my opinion were worn by Thailand, Singapore and Venezuela

Cultural Ternos galore

When the 65th Miss Universe Cultural Terno Show unfolded last night from Calle Crisologo all the way to Plaza Burgos in Vigan City, all eyes were not just on the twenty (20) lovely contestants who paraded around the historic venue in the country’s most elegant traditional attires. The different creations worn were also scrutinized, with the best ones praised accordingly and the not-so-awe-inspiring outputs set aside for plain mention.

Miss Thailand Chalita Suansane wore what I consider to be the best for the night. Rian Fernandez created a flowy number that was carried by the wearer in such a divine manner. There is at once an ethereal quality that melds with the ballgown-like construction into a number allowing a very dignified and respectful stiltedness in the overall effect.

Miss Singpore Cheryl Chou wore a Jearson Demavivas creation that is simple in cut, well-executed and fits the wearer like hand to a glove. Her oriental features added more sparkle to the finely-sewn embellishments to the body of the gown. The results speak in loud volumes.

And finally, Miss Venezuela Mariam Habach was assigned to wear the Frederick Verches terno that could have turned disastrous in the hands of a less meticulous designer. The gilded design asks for a fine-tuning of all elements that go into the serpentina cut and showed a bottom-heavy effect which still allowed movements of the material with ease.

Moving ahead: Janicel Lubina

Her reign as Bb. Pilipinas International 2015 may be over, but Janicel Lubina is moving ahead according to her own working pace. She is picking up all the opportunities that come knocking at her door with a grateful heart. And knowing how hardworking she is as an individual, the chances of getting offers from different corners are bright. It could be pageant judging, personal appearances, TV guesting or, just like last night, as “sagala” (flower maiden) of Designer Sony Boy Mindo for the 37th Flores de Mayo 2016 at the SM Mall of Asia. The possibilities are just there for the picking.

Janicel may no longer have the chance to pursue any other pageant channels (the risks far outweigh the potential benefits), but she is looking beyond the crown and taking all the options with an open mind and a generous (to her family in Palawan) heart.
