Miss Philippines MJ Lastimosa before her filmed Q&A interview

You can definitely see it in their faces. Be it a wide smile, an impish grin, a queenly upturn of the lips or a calculated laughter. These ladies are all so happy being in Doral Miami right now for the 63rd Miss Universe Pageant.

And why not? Aside from the VIP treatment, they are followed by photographers, stylists and hair/make-up specialists everywhere they go. Talk about living the life of an up and coming celebrity. This is it for them.

It sure would be nice if they will remain unaffected till the 25th. But with competition starting to heat up in a blaze, things will inevitably become a ‘to-each-her-own’ existence, regardless of friendships formed along the way.

Let’s enjoy their individual happiness for now. šŸ™‚

Miss Universe Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa for Sense&Style Magazine

With only Vietnam still unaccounted for in the group of ASEAN representatives for Miss Universe 2014, the regional cast is almost complete with the election of Rathi Menon as Miss Universe Singapore 2014 over the weekend.

And with the Philippines riding on a wave of top 5 placements since 2010, I have already set aside a sweet spot for MJ Lastimosa to be an early favorite to perform well in the December-scheduled beauty pageant.

So from among the remaining five (5) so far, who do you think will really hold a candle against the hyped and already popular candidates who will compete for the DIC crown? Will it be Thailand’s Pimbongkod ‘Ellie’ Chankaew, Indonesia’s Elvira Devinamira, Malaysia’s Sabrina Beneett, Myanmar’s Sharr Htutt Eaindra or Singapore’s Rathi Menon?

After the dancing and pasarela sessions, Gouldian scheduled the ladies of Miss Grand Thailand 2014 – Pla Disdamrong, Sasi Sintawee, First Wang, Ploy Wutthayakorn and Miss Universe Myanmar 2014 Sharr Eaindra to their make-up (as coordinated by Gouldian’s Gian Quiballo) classes which they met with much excitement. They had fun experimenting on different looks before finally settling with the one that works for them best and photo-worthy enough to upload online as the result of their first transformation. A styling class with Poi Subijano also followed.

The Miss Grand Thailand 2014 Queens plus Miss Universe Myanmar 2014 get to sharpen their dancing skills.

Two of the first sessions of the Miss Grand Thailand 2014 Queens – Parapadsorn Disdamrong, Sasi Sintawee, Patraporn Wang & Warangkanang Wutthayakorn – and Miss Universe Myanmar 2014 Sharr Htutt Eaindra were in dancing and pasarela. In the first part, all five ladies underwent a class under Russel of G-Force on how to move and sway for the stage with major consideration given on pageant-related choreography and the like. They were quite relaxed here as the gym outfits allowed them to wear rubber shoes or flats.

In the next class, however, Pla, Sasi, First, Ploy and Sharr changed into their two-piece swimsuits and high heels to begin with their Pasarela training with Pawee Ventura. This is where they tried to unlearn whatever steps and poses they got accustomed to and took in fiercer/bolder glides and turns to improve on their presentation skills.

And as far as interacting with a Filipina beauty queens is concerned, the ladies were also given the opportunity to spend dinner with Miss World 2011 1st Runner-Up Gwen Ruais who gave them valuable and practical insights/tips on how to approach their respective contests abroad.

I was fortunate enough to be invited by Gouldian Atelier (Pawee Ventura, Macoy Manlapaz, Mario Bergantinos et al) to a late lunch at Cyma Greek Taverna in Shangri-la Plaza Mall, together with the four Thai beauty queens of Miss Grand Thailand 2014 plus the reigning Miss Universe Myanmar. It was so much fun bonding with these ladies. And despite the limitations in communicating themselves in English, the ladies made up for it by turning up the charm meter even more.

Sadly, Miss Supranational Thailand 2014 Ananya Mongkolthai – who got sick just before the scheduled trip – did not make it to Manila.

But the five girls were a joy to watch and share small talks with. In fact, I even shared with them a small slice of my lovelife in Bangkok which took place many years back. Among the four Thais, Sasi had the most amount of English knowledge so she took the initiative of interpreting my light questions to the rest. Pla, First and Ploy can do simple answers in the same, though.

Not surprisingly, Sharr from Myanmar was the one who had the better command of the language. And given her husky voice and all, she actually comes off as quite smart and sophisticated. She added that watching lots of American movies each day helped improve her English a lot.

I was also formally introduced to Mr. Nawat Itsaragrisil who owns the Miss Grand Thailand and Miss Grand International pageants. Of course, a photo op with him also followed.

By Monday, their first training immersion will officially begin at the Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bataan. Photoshoots galore. And there will also be life coaching sessions scheduled in between the various modules prepared for them.
