A Grander Mutya ng Lalawigan ng Tarlac 2017 awaits

This coming Wednesday night, May 24, will be the finals of Mutya Ng Lalawigan Ng Tarlac 2017 to be held at the Capitol Grounds (Maria Christina Park), Tarlac City.

I will be there to judge along with Jojo Bragais and Miss Philippines Earth-Air 2016 Shannon Bridgman
plus more exciting personalities. Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago and boyfriend Marc Nash will host the proceedings. And normannorman.com will cover the event as well.

In the meantime, below are the Official Candidates vying for the crown. I must say that the province has really leveled up in the quality of candidates and the training they got prior to the big event.

Yesterday afternoon, the final screening of Miss Philippines Earth 2017 went without a hitch at the Carousel Mansion in Mandaluyong City. The ladies who came have already been pre-selected before attending the all-important interview with the judging panel which included Lorraine Schuck, Peachy Veneracion and (newly-placed) Miss Philippines Air 2016 Shannon Bridgman.

There were a few familiar faces who showed up, like Jessica McEwen from Mutya ng Pilipinas, Karen Ibasco from Bb. Pilipinas and Iya Antonio from Miss Global Philippines, just as there are notably promising ladies in contention like Samantha Acosta, Odeza Duqueza (Bb. Aurora 2017) and Heike Marlis.


The selected applicants from this group will join the official entries from the different key cities and provinces in the Philippines plus the Filipino Commumities abroad to form the 2017 batch of Earth Warriors who will vie for the crown of reigning titleholder Loren Mar Artajos come June.

The search for Miss Philippines Earth 2017 has also started


We’re not even into the start of screenings for Bb. Pilipinas 2017, and another national beauty pageant has already began its annual search. Miss Philippines Earth 2017 is now open for interested participants in this year’s edition which promises to be more exciting with the presence of Miss Earth 2016 Katherine Espin in most of the events leading to the finals (tentatively set around late May).

And with the resignation of Imelda Schweighart, the winners and elemental court are now complete, led by new Miss Philippines Earth 2016 Loren Mar Artajos. Miss Philippines Air is still Kiara Giel Gregorio, while promoted to new ranks are Shannon Bridgman as Miss Philippines Water, Melanie Mader as Miss Philippines Fire and previous semifinalist Tim Alsowyed as the new Miss Philippines Eco-Tourism.

Miss Philippines Fire 2016 Shannon Bridgman

When Shannon Bridgman competed during Mutya ng Pilipinas 2015, she went on to place in the Top 10. Not bad for a first-timer in Philippine pageants. She went back to Melbourne, Australia to resume her normal life with mom Florida. But soon enough, she realized that she just can’t settle back that easily.

And so, a plan was made during the latter part of last year to return to the Philippines and make that second attempt in the nationals. She found herself wearing the sash of Rosales, Pangasinan for Miss Philippines Earth 2016 and focused on doing better than the last.

Fate was more cooperative this time around. While she felt that her diligent efforts to stand out did not come appreciated at the onset, she went on with her game plan.

On pageant night, Shannon was not in the highest of spirits. Just hours earlier, her bag – along with those of three other candidates – were stolen inside UP Theater. It really dampened her momentum, so to speak. But with the moral support of her mom and designer/siblings Jontie and Nickky Martinez, she restored her confidence and was assured that the loss could mean a potential award before the end of the night.

Shannon is now Miss Philippines Fire 2016. And what a relief that she found more reasons to stay longer in the country. The responsibilities that come with the honor may not come as heavy as that of the Earth’s, but she will definitely use the title to forge ahead in her environmental advocacies.

Just keep the fire burning inside, Shannon! 😀

Imelda Schweighart is the new Miss Philippines Earth

Imelda Schweighart of Puerto Princesa City won Miss Philippines Earth 2016 after edging out her closest pursuer Miss Philippines Air Kiara Giel Gregorio of London and surprise Miss Philippines Water finisher Loren Mar Artajos of Laoag City. Shannon Bridgman of Rosales, Pangasinan claimed Miss Philippines Fire, with Melanie Mader of Vienna getting Miss Philippines Eco-Tourism.

Going into the Top 12 (only for this edition in connection with the June 12 Independence Day celebrations), the semifinalists were subjected to a unique “Earth Talk” interview where the ladies picked a “popular hashtag” in a container and expounded on the same. It was here where both Schweighart and Gregorio performed in relatively middling fashion as they were required to explain words that were less than impressive. Artajos gave the most solid reply that sealed her Top 5 placement.

But when the Final Q&A got underway during Top 5, the strong favorites really delivered and the judges’ choice on who to succeed Angelia Ong landed on the head of Schweighart. Artajos also gave a remarkable answer but somehow, she was already outweighed by the two ladies ahead of her in terms of cumulative performance in swimsuit, Filipiniana gown and all.

Imelda Schweighart will now represent the country in Miss Earth 2016 which – according to reports – might be hosted in Macau.

For the special awards handed out last night, Gregorio was named Miss Hana Shampoo, with Eva Reinoso of Alaminos, Pangasinan getting Miss SM Markets. Jan Abejero of Quezon City was named Best Eco Beauty Video with Krissandra Abel of Lobo, Batangas as Eco-Warrior.

My Top 16 for Miss Philippines Earth 2016


This coming Saturday night at the UP Theater in Diliman, the winners of Miss Philippines Earth 2016 will be crowned. And having reviewed the performances of each of the forty-seven (47) candidates, I applied my personal gut-feel for each one of them. By now, the real front-runners have emerged, and it will take a combination of good luck and excellent Q&A to finally nail the #1 spot and become the national successor of Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Ong.

Allow me to share my Top 16:

My Top 10 for Miss Philippines Earth 2016


Truthfully, the upper tier of my Top 10 could already be a foregone conclusion in the sense that I can already tell who would be locks for the all-important placements. Keep in mind that the lower tier during the actual finals are already assured of runner-up positions. Hence, five winners and five runners-up.

My five runners-up could be:
Shannon Bridgman
Loren Mar Artajos
Korina Christiene Reyes
Niña Sherra Tagalog
Krissandra Marie Abel

Some of you might wonder why Ellyz Santos of Laoang suddenly jumped to the upper 5 and may possibly do better than a runner-up ranking. I just feel that she has a special quality in her that could be looked at by the judges and organizers as advantageous for a more long-term elemental affiliation.

My potential Top 5 for Miss Philippines Earth 2016 with placements


While the battle for the crown is fierce between Kiara Giel Gregorio of London and Imelda Schweighart of Puerto Princesa City, I am strongly leaning on the former taking the spot after the announcement of winners.

Kiara ticks all the required boxes in my opinion. I can see her as the next-in-line for Angelia Ong, but with a soft British accent for a change. She has also the charisma to win people over, on top of showing an all-around pleasant personality and an articulate self.

But I’m not closing my doors on an Imelda Schweighart win yet. She could also get the nod of the decision-makers in the end. She is gorgeous and can express herself very well. I simply wanted to make a choice between the two.

As for the rest, I am giving Water to Melanie Mader, Fire to Fatima Alsowyed and Eco-Tourism to Ellyz Santos.

Regardless of the outcome on June 11, these ladies have made big strides in advocating for Mother Earth. And with the added upgrade to Climate Change Adaptation in their causes, Miss Philippines Earth has really become a most significant player in the national and international pageant scene.

Miss Philippines Earth 2016: My Running Favorites

With forty-six (46) candidates vying for just one crown, it is tough zeroing in on one lady who can zoom to the top and stay permanently in the #1 spot till the finals night. But this is Miss Philippines Earth. The first five (5) placements are already considered titleholders, with the next five (5) sashed as runners-up to the magic circle of elemental crown-wearers.

After the Press Presentation last May 16, it made things relatively easier for your blogger to share his running favorites. And at this juncture, it would be safe to say that the ladies who have strong chances to perform well at the Historic Aguinaldo Shrine on June 12 are Imelda Schweighart of Puerto Princesa City and Kiara Giel Gregorio of London. These two ladies are on a see-saw battle for the title of Angelia Ong.

But then again, the presence of consistent performers Tim Alsowyed of Dumaguete City, Shannon Bridgman of Rosales, Pangasinan and Ellyz Santos of Laoang, Northern Samar cannot be ignored. They complete my First 5 so far.

Now pageants are always full of surprises. So I wouldn’t overlook the chances of Evening Gown Competition winner Melanie Mader of Austria and Darling of the Press Liza Cacho of Anda, Pangasinan. Why, even the remaining candidates who made it as Hana Beauties of Nature should be given the edge to figure out well in the final tally. And they are Anna Mae Cagurangan of Piat, Cagayan, Korinna Christiene Reyes of the City of San Fernando, Jessica Zevenbergen of Murcia, Negros Occ. and Loren Artajos of Laoag City.

Finally, I am giving my temporary wild cards to Niña Sherra Tagalog of Palo, Leyte, Athena Catriz of the City of San Pedro, Maybelle Pameroyan of Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan and the Fire Fighter herself, Angelyn Pasaporte Presidente of Pototan, Iloilo.

The list will still change in some areas, for sure. But for now, these are the fifteen Earth warriors I am seeing as solid bets to make the cut in Miss Philippines Earth 2016. 🙂

It was a burning hot, sticky humid and drippingly sweaty affair during the Miss Philippines Earth 2016 Press Presentation held at the poolside of Diamond Hotel Philippines yesterday around noon. Except for the forty-six (46) candidates, everyone else perspired like there’s no tomorrow. But their presence made up for all the uncomfortable surroundings made all the more difficult by the heat emanating from water in the swimming pool.

A bit of a surprise came during the announcement of the Darling of the Press medal winners as the pretty but relatively shy Liza Cacho of Anda, Pangasinan outpointed Silver and Bronze medalists Imelda Schweighart of Puerto Princesa City and Kiara Giel Gregorio of London to claim Gold. It goes to show how heavy the supports was for the lady who was just as amused of getting that covered award.

But when time came for the announcement of the Top 10 Beauties of Nature who will vie for Miss Hana “naturally beautiful” Special Sponsor Prize, the rising favorites started to be named one by one. I’m saying this because their choices last year was like a preview of the final results save for one pick.

The ten (10) are Imelda Schweighart / Kiara Giel Gregorio / Ellyz Santos of Laoang, Northern Samar / Shannon Bridgman of Rosales, Pangasinan / Ma. Fatima Alsowyed of Dumaguete City / Korinna Christiene Reyes of the City of San Fernando / Loren Mar Artajos of Laoag City / Melanie Mader of Vienna / Jessica Zevenbergen of Murcia, Negros Occ / and Anna Mae Cagurangan of Piat, Cagayan.

Let’s see if the Presenters’ batting record will go up or down this year. For now, let’s check out photos from the event. 🙂

From Mutya to Earth Warrior, Shannon Bridgman has transformed herself

Shannon Rebecca Bridgman is one Fil-Aussie who takes a lot of pride in her Pinoy roots. Last year, she had her first taste of pageantry in our shores as the representative of Melbourne, Australia in Mutya ng Pilipinas 2015 where she managed a Top 10 finish. Not bad for starters in a country where beauty contests are the toughest nuts to crack, especially if one is being transported from another country where she grew up in.

The pageant bug must have really hit hard. And instead of cutting her dreams short in late 2015, she vowed to return. And now she is an Official Candidate of Miss Philippines Earth 2016 as the representative of Rosales, Pangasinan.

Sweet Shannon does not give earth-shaking reasons for wanting to become the next Earth Ambassadress of the Philippines. She digs deep into her heart to become an environmental advocate with a lot of warmth and sincerity.

“I want to become Miss Philippines Earth because I want to increase awareness in proper trash management and environment conservation in our youth. We have to teach our children how to dispose of our waste before our country becomes one huge garbage can. I believe that winning the title will give me the voice to push this forward.”

Six more candidates of Miss Philippines Earth 2016

 
While the rest of the country is too engulfed by Bb. Pilipinas 2016, Miss Philippines Earth 2016 is actively in the process of finding its next winner who will have the most unenviable task of going for a back-to-back-to-back victory in Miss Earth 2016.

Be that as it may, let me present to you six (6) more Official Candidates for this edition, most of them are quite familiar faces by now.

There is Loren Mar Artajos of Laoag City who screened for Bb. Pilipinas 2016, just like Kisszel Malazarte of Pililla, Rizal who also took part in the same under two different camps – Aces & Queens and R-L’s Angels, respectively.

If you also followed last year’s Mutya ng Pilipinas and the ladies who made Top 10, Shannon Bridgman of Rosales, Pangasinan will be recognized as a cross-over. She previously represented Down Under. A former Miss Manila aspirant is also here in the person of Alexandra Abdon who will wear the city’s sash in the competition.

The two others are relative newbies – Kamille Alyssa Quinola of Vigan City and Carlette Marjean Agapito of Santa Rosa, Nueva Ecija. They may be new in the game, but they have already been regionally exposed to pageants and the like.
