Miss Universe 2011 is Leila Lopes of Angola!

The dust has settled a bit after Miss Angola LEILA LULIANA DA COSTA VIEIRA LOPES nailed a glorious achievement by winning the Miss Universe 2011 crown – the 60th in a long line of titleholders from the 1950s to the present. She surpassed the competition from 88 equally stunning ladies during the worldwide telecast of the biggest global pageant from Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

First Runner-Up is Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine. Second Runner-Up is Priscila Machado of Brazil, with 3rd Runner-Up honors going to Shamcey Supsup of the Philippines. Completing the Top 5 is 4th Runner-Up Zilin Luo of China. Heavy favorites from the USA and Venezuela reached the Top 16, but no further than that. The biggest shock, though, was the non-inclusion of ever-popular Miss Malaysia Deborah Henry in the quarterfinals. It must have come as a shock to her countrymen. And the surprise of the night, on the other hand, is Miss Portugal Laura Goncalvez making it to the Top 10. Hometown bet Priscila Machado made the Brazilians proud when she climbed all the way to 2nd Runner-Up.

Our very own Miss Philippines, Shamcey Supsup, was one of the first arriving delegates in Sao Paulo for Miss Universe 2011. She landed in the host city together with the representatives of Colombia, Costa Rica and Aruba (perhaps the quartet trained together the previous week) and is so far creating positive vibes and impressions among the locals.

As we all know by now, there will be a global fan vote in this year’s edition that will automatically earn one favored candidate a semifinal slot come finals night on September 12.

Since the Miss Universe 2011 beauties will start arriving in Sao Paulo this coming August 21 (that’s already very close!), I thought it best to blog about the host city for those who want to know a bit more about the place.

With a population numbering around 20 million, Sao Paulo is easily the largest (and the richest) city in Brazil. It is also an important commercial and financial hub in the whole of South America, aside from having one of the most diverse ethnicities anywhere in the world.

Must-see tourist sites include Ibirapuera Park, Avenida Paulista and the Cathedral of Sao Paulo. If you’re interested in going around and beyond the fringes of the city, you should include visits to Bixiga (Little Italy), Liberdade (Little Chinatown that actually looks more like a Little Asia), Itaim Bibi, Vila Madalena and Pinheiros. if you want to know more, visit the official tourism website by clicking HERE.

Accommodations-wise, check out your options (with helpful reviews) with Tripadvisor so you can plan your budget and walking-around money. I’m sure you’ll find one that rightly fits the bill.

The city is usually cold and dry during the winter season months from June-August, but the temperature is going to be unusually hot once close to a hundred gorgeous beauties from around the world fire up its streets and sights for the annual celebration of beauty that is Miss Universe 2011.

The ladies competing this year will undoubtedly have a grand carnival time of their lives in Sao Paulo, as they will be treated with the warm hospitality of its people. I can already imagine the wide variety of fun activities they’ll be doing, including a Ricky Martin concert.

She is 22 years old and a fashion model who stands 1.80m. And she can tower above anyone else without really trying. And her name is Elisa Torrini. And she is now Miss Universe Italy 2011.

One unique info about Elisa is that she comes from a cool family proud of each member. Just check out the website of her father, Sergio, and read the short pages. You’ll see what I mean.

For now, Elisa is in the thick of preparations for Miss Universe 2011 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Surely, she wants to become Italy’s first Miss Universe. Ever. 🙂

It’s going to be a Beauty Carnival in Sao Paulo for Miss Universe 2011!

This is a fabulously splashy news for all pageant fans around the world. For the very first time, Brazil will host the globe’s biggest beauty competition and host city will be Sao Paulo for Miss Universe 2011!

According to Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrete’s Twitter – @The Real Miss U – Miss Universe Organization owner Donald Trump is now reunited with Brazilian officials signing the contract that grants the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to host the 2011 Miss Universe pageant. It would be the first time Brazil hosts the pageant, which reunites 85 beauties from all over the world every year. The finals would take place on Monday, September 12th.

Sao Paulo, Brazil to host the 2011 Miss Universe pageant
Dec 16, 2010 NEW YORK – Donald J. Trump, NBC Universal and Miss Universe Organization President, Paula M. Shugart, announced today the 60th Annual MISS UNIVERSE® Competition will air live from Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 12, 2011. The glamorous live event, featuring the most beautiful women in the universe, will air on NBC in the United States, with a Spanish simulcast on Telemundo.

“I am very pleased to announce our partnership with media conglomerate Grupo Bandeirantes de Comunicacao and the selection of Sao Paulo as the host location for Miss Universe 2011,” said the pageant’s owner, Donald J. Trump. “Brazil is rapidly becoming an economic powerhouse and is a great place to do business. This decade, Brazil is hosting three of the greatest and most-watched worldwide events: the World Cup, the Summer Olympic Games and now, to kick it all off, Miss Universe.”

“Grupo Bandeirantes is delighted that we have reached an agreement with the Miss Universe Organization to host the Miss Universe 2011 pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil,” said the network’s president, Joao Carlos Saad. “We believe it is fitting for Brazil to set the stage for this glamorous event, and we look forward to showing the contestants, and the almost 200 countries around the world who watch the pageant every year, the exciting and vibrant culture of our beautiful country.”

Contestants from more than 80 countries around the world will travel to Brazil for almost a month of activities leading up to the live telecast. They will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview, as they vie for the coveted title of Miss Universe 2011. This is first time in its 60-year history the Miss Universe contest will be held in Brazil.

Mexicana, Ximena Navarrete, Miss Universe 2010, will crown her successor at the conclusion of the telecast. During her reign, Navarrete has traveled the world as an advocate for HIV/AIDS education, research, and legislation. The next Miss Universe will continue this work.

This piece of good news is exciting me big time! I’ve long dreamed of the Miss Universe being held in Brazil and it will come true next year! 🙂

Supermodel of the World 2010: Starting them real young

Fashion models, just like gymnasts, need to be started young in order to make the most of their potentials before they even reach the age of 20. It can be a cruel world but who can resist the glitz and glamour of such a career? Hardwork and discipline are musts and this is where the line is drawn between those who are mere flashes-in-the-pan or those with the good chance of getting a long and profitable shelf life as one.
