It’s always great to be alive!
Celebrating a birthday in the midst of a pandemic lockdown may sound sad for some. But not me. I take happiness in the small (but significant) nuggets of positivity in or around me:
– I am fully vaccinated;
– I have my mother by my side;
– I still get #wfh gigs that pay the bills somehow;
– I still have my blog at normannorman.com where the engagements have become more intellectually stimulating;
– I am entering Season 6 of Pageantry Norms this coming Sunday;
– I have no love life, and that is by choice. Family will always come first;
– I have so many friends inside and outside of social media who will shower me with greetings;
– Most importantly, I look up to Someone up there who blessed me with another year of existence.
What more can I ask for? Oh yes, a safe – albeit slow – return to local and international travel will definitely complete me.
And that is how you make a birthday post with optimism.

That quote couldn’t be truer than in my years as a pageant blogger. It took a message greeting from WordPress.com to remind me that I started normannorman.com twelve (12) years ago – July 9, 2009 to be exact. While I consciously avoided mixing my personal life into the same, a lot has happened since then. And I wouldn’t trade a thing. The ups outnumber the downs by a mile.
I have learned the art of handling bashers and unpleasant criticisms, and have mellowed me in the process. After all, positivity is bliss. I consider myself married to pageantry. It is one marriage that withstood the test of time (and pandemic), and where divorce is and will never be an option.
My biggest gratitude to all the readers who have come, stayed, left, returned and became loyal followers.
Cheers to 12 years of blogging! 🥂
PS. Pageantry Norms is my love child. 😊
August 11 | #Actual Birthday Musings:
The last five months of my life (from March 11 to the present) have been completely uneventful to say the least. And quite literally at that. No live events or pageant activities to cover or report about. If that’s not enough, I have never ever deeply embraced staying-at-home till now that the global pandemic changed all our lives in a flash.
On the bright side, the digital platform has given me the opportunity to continue doing what I do best. The words “Zoom”, “Streamyard” and even “Kumu” used to be nowhere near the mainstream of my usual vocabulary as being important. It was also because of the long lockdown that #PageantryNorms was born, and why normannorman.com continues to exercise my mind with the daily challenge of coming up with blogs that (still) mercifully engage my discriminating readers who keep me on my feet. Content is the most stressful demand, especially with an online program I need to plan 2-3 weeks in advance. But am I complaining? Not at all.
My physical health remains on a “so-far-so-good” status, and having Mama as permanent lockdown companion continues to preserve my sanity. Our relationship, while not the most teleserye-heartwarming, is a unique blend of individual quirks that still mesh under the most trying circumstances.
So on this day, I have fully realized this quote:
“Life is like a camera.
Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.”
Indeed, the next click might just be the money shot…or another fail. But either way, I am ready to conquer it head-on. With face shield and mask to boot!

Gone are the years when I would yearn for colorful balloons and soft icings on cakes where candles can be planted, lighted and blown after the traditional chorus of the “Happy Birthday” song.
These are the days when I would rather be #thankful for the blessings that dotted my existence all throughout the past twelve months. The gifts – both material and intangible – may still remain in place. But it is in gratitude that I would rather dwell in.
#Thankful for another year to live.
#Thankful for another year to love.
#Thankful for another year to let go of the lows that persist in between the highs.
There are times when I would think that my continued survival has not been the most glorious. But once the good fortune comes bringing in reasons to smile wider than to sulk in sadness, I find comfort in seeing that I have made and continue to make indelible marks in the life of others.
Onwards to a stronger and more meaningful life ahead. I am what I am right now because of everyone who has touched and/or changed my life in more ways than one.
I can never be perfect.
I’m happier being your perfectly imperfect blogger.
We live in a technology-driven Universe where bashings, negativity and jaded minds exist.
This Christmas, and all throughout the coming year, why don’t we try being nice (most of, if not all, the time), having less unnecessary hang-ups, listening to our hearts instead of the intrigues/issues that make trolls out of the potential goodness in character that we can bring and focusing more on what each of one can do best for others?
There is a lot to celebrate in life and so much more to praise in love and harmony.
#MerryChristmas to one and all!
May peace and positivity dwell in our midst – within and beyond the Joy of the Season.
