One of the more exciting highlights of any Miss Universe edition is the National Costume Competition that the candidates will be participating in – especially those from our neighboring ASEAN nations.
Below are four of them:
1) “Banh Mi” – Vietnam
2) “Chang the Icon of Siam” – Thailand
3) “Kingdom of Wonder” – Cambodia
4) “From Animation to Butterflies” – Indonesia
Looking forward to what Miss Myanmar and our very own Miss Universe Philippines Catriona Gray will wear!

National Costumes galore for Miss Earth 2016
Last night at the Ballroom of Century Park Hotel, the National Costume Presentation of the Miss Earth 2016 Official Candidates as one big group instead of the usual three separate smaller ones that characterized the entire pre-pageant coverage the past couple of weeks.
The eighty-three (83) Earth Warriors proudly displayed their traditional attires to the awe and admiration of everyone who attended. This is a photo blog of the event so here are shots from the same.
All individual photos taken by Joy Arguil will follow as soon as she finishes editing each one of them.
Meanwhile, below is a short video scan of all the National Costume Competition winners from each continent, plus the medalists for Congeniality and Photogenic voting.

How does MJ’s NatCos compare to the ones in the last 15 years?
I hear all of you loud and clear. Is this really the worst national costume (left photo) ever made for a Philippine rep to Miss Universe? The answer is a resounding three-letter word of affirmation. And I’m pretty sure that you have made your noise to all the concerned authorities at BPCI by now.
I don’t really want to dwell on the inspiration for the bad creation. Because it is quite obvious that the designer was never inspired while doing the same.
So comparing what MJ wore to the outputs from 1999-2013 (video above), we really hit rock bottom this year. Hopefully, the next phrase should apply – there’s no other way but up. And I am saying that with a trembling voice.
Watch her swimsuit and gown performances now to ease some of the pain.

The Miss Earth 2011 National Costume Competition was recently held at Acacia Hotel in Filinvest Alabang. All 85 contenders glided the runway in their best traditional attires and I just had to select the five ladies who wore them best. And they are as follows:
Miss Japan Tomoko Maeda wore my pick for Best National Costume. A very NOW geisha!
Miss India Hasleen Kaur wore a very fashionable Indian garb with colors that veer away from the usual earth tones in the past. This is my choice for 2nd best.
Call it showstopping. Casandra Becerra wore a visually glorious costume that is not at all unusual with beauty queens from Mexico. My 3rd best.
Miss Chinese Taipei Cherry Liu is an oriental goddess in this creation. My 4th best.
Andrea De Vivo Creazzo wore a Colombian national costume that is both colorful and eye-catching. The design is simple, but the impact is more eye candy than drag. My 5th best.
I wanted to concentrate on costumes that have strong themes of Mother Earth and the like. But since very few came up with environmentally-inspired ones, I decided to judge the same based on usual standards.
Watch out for my Miss Earth 2011 predictions this coming Saturday. 🙂
