We all know that Brazil placed in the Top 5 last year when Priscila Machado was named 2nd Runner-Up to eventual winner Leila Lopes. But that was Sao Paulo hosting and the homecourt advantage was in full swing, even including a healthy sweep for two other Portuguese-speaking candidates like Lopes and Portugal’s Laura Goncalves (Top 10 placer). Will Gabriela Markus achieve what her predecessor did on foreign soil? Why not? Natália Guimarães and other former Miss U reps of the country have made it far in years past. But the crown itself continues to be elusive. After Iêda Maria Vargas in 1963 and Martha Vasconcellos in 1968, Brazil has not had a crowned victor for 43 years now. Will 2012 be a year to rejoice for them? Or will it be a better-luck-next-year denouement once more? 😉
Ieda Maria Vargas and Martha Vasconcellos are the two Brazilians who have won the Miss Universe crown to date. But these wins were in the 1960s. And since then, no other representative from this South American nation has yet to nail the title for a 3rd time. Natalia Guimaraes, their 2007 entry, came close to doing so by placing 1st Runner-Up to Riyo Mori of Japan.
This year, Brazil is pinning its’ hopes on 21 year-old 5’11” model and Minas Gerais native Debora Lyra. And winning this year would not be an impossible objective either. She is a statuesque and ravishing beauty whose doll-like features and shapely figure can make any pageant fanatic include her in the list of favorites. It is also interesting to note that this well-traveled lady is the winner of the Top Model of the World competition last 2008, and the previous exposure will definitely help her lots in competing with the other equally outstanding delegates in the Miss Universe 2010 in Las Vegas next month.
Good luck, Debora! 😉
