The 1st Runners-Up who became Miss USA after the original winners were named Miss Universe

If for any reason, the winner cannot fulfill her duties, the 1st runner-up will take her place…

We always hear the statement above before a new Miss Universe is crowned. And it was back in 2002 when the 1st Runner-Up Justine Pasek of Panama took over Oxana Fedorava of Russia.


Now over at Miss USA, the line of succession is more standard (and non-complicated) in practice.

From 1967 onwards, the first runner-up automatically replaced any Miss USA titleholder who won the Miss Universe pageant. Here are the ones who benefitted, in reverse order:

Nana Meriwether of Maryland – 2012

Brandi Sherwood of Idaho – 1997 (she was also crowned Miss Teen USA 1989 prior)

Shanna Lynn Moakler of New York – 1995

Jineane Ford of Arizona – 1980

Cheryl Patton of Florida – 1967 (She was 2nd Runner-Up but took over the Miss USA title after 1st runner-up Susan Bradley of California declined when Sylvia Hitchcock won Miss Universe)

And we have a new Miss USA.

After the two-hour pageant spectacle at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Connecticut’s Erin Brady was crowned Miss USA 2013. First Runner-Up is Alabama, Second Runner-Up is Illinois, Third Runner-Up is Utah, 4th Runner-Up is Texas and 5th Runner-Up is South Carolina.

Erin is 25 years old, stands 5’8″ and a graduate of Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Finance and a minor in Criminal Justice.

A twist during the announcement of Top 5 was revealed when a 6th delegate (Texas) was seeded into the finals via Twitter votes.

Top 5 + 1:
Utah, Alabama, Illinois, South Carolina, Connecticut and Texas (Twitter Choice)

Erin will now be Moscow-bound for Miss Universe 2013!

Miss USA 2012 is Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island

Olivia Culpo, 20, 5’5.5″

A 20 year-old near-petite beauty from Cranston, Rhode Island is the new Miss USA, the very first from her home state. The 5’5.5″ Olivia Culpo outclassed 50 other candidates to win the right to represent the country in Miss Universe 2012 this coming December. Comprising her runners-up are Maryland’s Nana Meriwether (1st), Ohio’s Audrey Bolte (2nd), Nevada’s Jade Keisall (3rd) and Georgia’s Jasmyn Wilkins (4th).

Here are my choices for Miss USA 2012

I armchair-judged the candidates of Miss USA 2012 (scheduled to be crowned on June 3) and here are the dozen beauties who made it to my Top 12 (in alphabetical order):

(L-R) Katherine Webb of Alabama, Natalie Pack of California, Jasmyn Wilkins of Georgia, Rani Williamson of Maine, Nana Meriwether of Maryland and Kristen Danyal of Michigan

(L-R) Jade Keisall of Nevada, Michelle Leonardo of New Jersey, Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island, Taylor Neisen of South Dakota, Brittany Booker of Texas and Catherine Muldoon of Virginia.

From the 12 ladies above, I further trimmed the group to my Top 6. In what could be a preview of the glamshot theme for Miss Universe 2012, we can see the candidates donning roman-inspired gowns that remind me of Spartacus and the like. Once more in alphabetical order, they are:

(L-R) Taylor Neisen of South Dakota, Brittany Booker of Texas and Catherine Muldoon of Virginia.

Finally, I am highlighting the three (3) state representatives who just might make up the top tier of the competition, in my order of preference this time around:

(L-R) Kristen Danyal of Michigan, Catherine Muldoon of Virginia and Brittany Booker of Texas.

So obviously, I am singling out Michigan’s Kristen Danyal as my choice to win Miss USA 2012. 🙂
