This blog entry will read like a throwback within a throwback. Just like Binibining Pilipinas, Mutya ng Pilipinas has already reached its Golden Anniversary last 2018 – fairly more recent but still full of pride and glory. For a national pageant to successfully make it through five decades is an achievement that stood the test of time. And its long list of titleholders and international winners gave their share to the country’s performance record in other beauty competitions – prime of which were Miss Asia Quest-turned- Miss Asia Pacific Quest-turned-Miss Asia Pacific International, Miss Tourism International and during selected periods – Miss World, Miss Intercontinental, Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International, Miss Tourism Metropolitan International, Queen of Clubs International and Best Model of the World.
Can you still remember the less popular, but equally beautiful theme song of Mutya ng Pilipinas? Click below so you can listen to it while looking back at fifty (50) glorious years of the second-oldest national pageant in the country.
Some of its pageant-victorious pageant alumni include:
Miss Asia Quest 1982 Carines Zaragoza
Miss Asia Quest 1983 Gloria “Bong” Dimayacyac
Miss Asia Pacific Quest 1989 Lorna Legaspi
Miss Asia Pacific Quest 1993 Michelle Aldana
Miss Asia Pacific International 2018 Sharifa Akeel
Miss Tourism International 2000 Esperanza Manzano
Miss Tourism International 2012 Rizzini Gomez
Miss Tourism International 2013 Angeli Dione Gomez
Miss Tourism International 2017 Jannie Alipoon
Miss Tourism International 2019 Cyrille Payumo
Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International 1999 Racquel Uy
Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International 2015 Leren Mae Bautista

Below is a video made especially for Mutya Gold which featured stories of some of its past titleholders and how being a Mutya made them forever Queens.
And just to complete the throwback, allow me to share the grand opening number and crowning moments of the 50th Mutya ng Pilipinas held at the Mall of Asia Arena last September, 2018. This was a monumental effort spearheaded by then President Hemilyn Escudero-Tamayo (right photo with Joy Arguil and I) who pulled out all the stops to make the production her farewell legacy for the pageant institution.
While all of us are engrossed with the simultaneous goings-on at Bb. Pilipinas 2020 and Miss Universe Philippines 2020, the search for this year’s environmental advocates has been progressing at its normal pace with some of the Official Candidates already introduced in posts and updates in the pageant’s Facebook page. Meet some of the Earth Angels for 2020 who are likely to be familiar names and faces for most of you:
First on the list is Sherry Anne Tormes who was part of Bb. Pilipinas twice in the past. Originally, though, she was part of a previous edition of MPE. This is like her return to the competition that could bring her the crowning glory she has been aiming for.
And then we have Patrixia Sherly Santos whose pageant career brought instant recall to the “x” in her first name. She was also a Binibini in the past, aside from taking part in Miss World Philippines, Ambassadress of the World Philippines and the Redvocates Search for AIDS Ambassadors in the country.
Gianna Margarita Llanes was an Official Candidate of Miss World Philippines two years back. Her national pageantry experience brought the confidence in joining other smaller tilts where she was able to shine more strongly. In particular, she made it as 1st Runner-Up during Miss Mandaluyong 2019.
Roxie Baeyens may be the youngest among the six, but she is the one who has already represented the country in an international beauty competition. She emerged 1st Runner-Up during Miss Tourism and Culture Universe 2019 after being named Face of Tourism 2019. She is from Baguio City.
Justiene Ortega is one lady who was able to juggle time between her pageant conquests and gainful employment. It does help when the field of work is in sales and marketing. She was a contender in past stagings of both Miss World Philippines and Miss Tourism Philippines.
Finally, we have Hannah Bithiah Merino – a proud Lagunense who worked as Flight Attendant of Philippine Airlines. This tall lady was crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas Calabarzon before qualifying as one of the fifty lovelies who made the Golden Edition of Mutya ng Pilipinas more colorful.
These six Earth Angels will be joined by other contestants from different parts of the country in Miss Philippines Earth 2020. Watch out for them soon!

I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of beauty queen April Love Jordan who succumbed to liver cancer last Friday, June 21. She is 31. May her soul be at peace with our Heavenly Father.
You will all remember April Love as part of several national beauty pageants such as Mutya ng Pilipinas, Bb. Pilipinas, Miss Philippines Earth and Miss World Philippines. She brougjt honor to the country by winning the title “Beauty of the World” last 2009.

Five (5) interesting “Did-You-Know” specifics about your #Binibini19 Ilene Astrid de Vera:
1. Did you know that she loves doing fun sports like surfing, boxing and car racing?
2. Did you know that – before Bb. Pilipinas started this year – she applied with Qatar Airways and got accepted? She was told to wait three months (from mid Feb to May) to know when she will fly to Doha for training.
3. Did you know that she trained for Bb Pilipinas 2019 as early as November last year as soon as she passed her Mutya Ng Pilipinas and Miss Asia Pacific International crowns?
4. Did you know that a fortune teller told her last year that she should join a beauty pageant after seeing that she has a very big chance of winning again? She was also advised to take care of herself and start losing weight asap. Before that, she never had any close encounters with fortune tellers. She just felt that the person seemed very serious in everything that was told her. Our lovely Cebuana took that as one of the reasons why she is working hard for the pageant everyday.
5. Did you know that she worked closely with GABRIELA | A National Alliance of Women for her advocacy which is to spread awareness about women’s rights, especially that of single mothers? Being raised by one pushed her to champion this cause.
Catch Ilene in the much-awaited Press Presentation this week!

The 50-year old beauty organization – Mutya ng Pilipinas – announces its new management led by media celebrity and women empowerment advocate Cory Quirino as its President.
Ms. Quirino brings with her six successful years in pageantry having produced outstanding winners including one major international crown.
Fred Yuson, Chairman of Mutya ng Pilipinas, revealed the strategic move as “one which will positively secure the future of the organization.”
Quirino shared, “In the search for the Hometown Girl, we at Mutya intend to give every young lady who dreams of having a crown on her head and a chance to be discovered.”
Instrumental in bridging Mutya closer to aspiring candidates was the signing of an MOU with the Liga ng mga Barangay headed by Kapitana Eden Pineda under the auspices of DILG Usec. for Barangay Affairs, Martin Diño.
“Wherever the Filipina is and whatever hometown she resides in, whether here or abroad, we extend a warm invitation to her to become a member of the Mutya ng Pilipinas family”, announced Cory Quirino.
Meanwhile, the official search of Mutya ng Pilipinas begins on April 2019. Coronation night is set for August, 2019.
