The relative dominance of Asia/Pacific in 2018 Male Pageantry

In 2018, it would be safe to say that the Asia/Pacific nosed out the other continental regions in international male pageantry with wins courtesy of Seung Hwan Lee of Korea in Mister International, Prathamesh Maulingkar of India in Mister Supranational, George Reylor De Lumen of the Philippines in Mister Universal Ambassador and Brata Angga Kartasasmita of Indonesia in Mr. Universe Tourism (who took over the reign of another Asian – Ion Perez of the Philippines). José-Manuel Alcalde of Chile snatched Mister Model International and Anthony Clarinda of Curacao copped Men Universe Model. There are several other male competitions to cite, but you can also add the victories of Vietnam in Man of the World, Tahiti in Mister Grand International, the Philippines in Mister Model Worldwide and Nepal in Mister Model of The World to add up to the score card of AsPac.

For 2019, we have the two biggest international male pageants happening in our shores come February (Mister International) and March (Mr World). So there really is so much to look forward to this side of the tilts in the Year of the Earth Pig!

Sunday Specials: Things are looking up for Gentlemen of the Philippines

Things are definitely looking up for the 2nd edition of Gentlemen of the Philippines. The 2017 competition has Hannah’s Beach Resort and Convention Center – the Crown Jewel of the North and the country’s premier pageant destination – as its main presentor and where the Preliminary Competition will be hosted from September 1-3. This is a big break for the national contest as the said venue has always been associated with Miss Philippines Earth and Mutya ng Pilipinas. This is the very first time that an all-male event has been green-lighted for full sponsorship. And pageant site Sash Factor (with its Head Brix Vera) contributed big time in making this happen.

Aside from that, Co-Presentor Belmeré Skin Care Center is taking charge of the Press Presentation scheduled on the afternoon of August 31. This is where this year’s candidates will be formally introduced to members of the media.

And come September 9, all roads will lead to the Grand Ballroom of Hotel Rembrandt in QC for the much-awaited finals night where five (5) new titleholders will ne proclaimed – all scheduled to represent the country in international pageants such as Mister Universal Ambassador, Mister Model International, Best Global Model of the Year, Mister Tourism World and Mister National Universe.

Flashback Friday: The Very First Gentlemen of the Philippines

Helping mount a national pageant is not an easy endeavor, let alone a male contest which has not fully achieved a mainstream status in the Philippines. Yet. But 2017 promises to be a notch better than the last, what with the simultaneous existence of other competitions like Mister Philippines and Misters of Filipinas. And the 2nd Edition of the Gentlemen of the Philippines is looking at its sophomore edition with eye-opening lessons learned from the inaugural effort. This year, the search will be more carefully-planned in order to sustain the momentum previously built.

In this post are random photos and videos taken from July of last year when the male pageant held its sashing ceremony at the Valle Verde Country Club, Press Presentation at the Sulo Hotel poolside and Provincial Tour in Quezon Province (Sariaya, Candelaria, Tayabas and Lucena City) leading to the finals at the Trinity University of Asia Theater.

Being the Media/PR Head of Gentlemen Charities Inc., I believe that I have made good with my promise to spread awareness about the competition, as well as continue with the relative visibility of the winners such as Andrea Biondo, Kian Sumague, Paul Renzo Velo, Mark Joshua Marquez, Jason Martin and Miguel Alexis Maliwat (and even some of the candidates like Johannes Rissler and Andrei Salvacion who are doing good in their respective careers).


For 2017, the national screening and announcement of Official Candidates – followed by orientation – will happen on July 30. Competition period will take place from September 2-9 and for now, the eventual winners at stake will be sent to Mister Universal Ambassador in Makkasar, Indonesia, Mister Model International in Miami, Florida and Mister Tourism World in Myanmar. Last year’s Mister Tourism International bet will remain in place as his competition is still scheduled by August/September. The surprise will be a new title to be handed out during the September 9 finals.

While we generally celebrate Halloween just for fun (plus a valid reason for partying), there is also a side of it that can be observed for an activity laced with some charity work. Two of the Gentlemen of the Philippines winners – Mister Southeast Asia International 2016/Mister Universal Ambassador 2016 2nd Runner-Up Andrea Biondo and his national pageant 2nd Runner-Up Rex Calimbayan volunteered to help out RJ Garcia of The Appledrive Project for a good old “Appletreat-or-Trick” activity where kids from Pineda Elementary School in Pasig City were asked to dress up in their Halloween costumes and participate in the usual treat-or-trick with apples as the star of the whole program. The two Gentlemen gamely carried boxes of specially-decorated apples and distributed them to the participants while bringing out the inner child in them to spread more joy.

Their names and faces are more-or-less familiar. Individually, you have seen them before online, in competition somewhere else or in person. As a group, though, these six men will now be known as Gentlemen of the Philippines. And this will signal the start of a male pageant in the country that will seek to find handsome and advocacy-driven young Filipinos who have more than good looks to offer.

Gentlemen of the Philippines will have its official launch before the end of the month. The competition will be a nationwide search for the next representatives to Mister Model International 2016 in New Delhi, India by August, Mister Tourism International 2017 in Panama City next year, Mister Universal Ambassador 2016 in Bali, Indonesia by September, Mister Worldwide Competition 2016 in Orlando, Florida by December and the inaugural edition of Mister Tourism World in Bali, Indonesia in November.

Screening of candidates will take place from March to April, with Pre-Pageant activities scheduled by late May up to the actual competition period of June 19-25, 2016.

Just last week, the high-fashion photoshoot of the reigning Gentlemen was held at the Ablaza Mansion in New Manila under the masterful photography of Cebu-based Russian lensman Artem Levy, Creative Stylist Domz Ramos, HMUA Dennis Santos, Videographer Joman Radaza and the over-all coordination of Montreal-based Michael Davantes. The handsome men wore the designs of Edwin Uy, Adam Balasa & Pegarto Clothing – with accessories by Jun-Jun Ablaza – for the shoot. The final photos will be released soon.
