Miss Universe Philippines 2012 Janine Tugonon: third time's a charm for the country in the pageant?
According to the
Urban Dictionary, “Third time’s a charm” is…
When you are trying something (activity, task, function) and you are not successful during the first two attempts, you make this comment to assure people that you will get it right the third time you attempt it.
Venus Raj started it all in 2010 when she placed fifth in MU2010 in Las Vegas. Shamcey Supsup followed suit last year when she notched fourth in MU2011 in Sao Paulo. Back to Las Vegas this time around, a full circle of sorts could be shaping up with Janine Tugonon gearing up for the ‘beauty battle’ that can possibly spell the difference between the third (consecutive) time being a charm or back to square one of clapping for the winners.
I am, quite simply, stunned with how our entry has turned into a ravishing Filipina ready and determined to bring more honors to the country in a competition considered to be the fitting finale for the annual round-the-world celebrations of beauty, purpose, culture, relevance and what-have-yous. From Miss World to Miss International and just recently, Miss Earth, it has all come down to this – Miss Universe.
Will Janine Tugonon be the answered prayer for all pageant-loving Filipinos here and abroad? Will she be the occupant of the throne that has been missing a Pinay Miss Universe since 1974? The only answer I can give is that she will fight tooth and nail to better her predecessors’ achievements. Matching the same won’t make her efforts any less significant. But claiming a spot that only Gloria Diaz and Margarita Moran were able to reach in their respective years is the crowning glory for decades of patiently waiting. A lot is at stake here.
So to Janine, let me give these parting rah-rah statements before she leaves for Las Vegas on Sunday: “Aim high, even higher than you could ever imagine. The journey won’t be a bed of roses. But the rewards, if successfully accomplished and if fate so decides, will be greater than the collective efforts of all the Filipinas who have tried but failed in their missions.” 😀
