After yesterday’s blog entry about Miss Universe 2014, you would expect that a throwback article about Miss Universe 2015 will come next. Well, just to slightly adjust the predictability factor, I am still writing about that edition but focusing instead on one of the Top 10 Finalist who happens to be the first biracial queen who represented Japan in the pageant.

Ariana Mamiko Miyamoto (宮本・エリアナ・磨美子) is a fashion model born and raised in Nagasaki, Japan all her life. She did spend two years in Jacksonville, Arkansas with her African American father Bryant Stanfield. That is where she studied at the Jacksonville High School. Thereafter, she returned home up until she joined the Miss Universe Japan competition and the rest is some kind of history for this beautiful lady who still feels that the aversion of the Japanese to immigration is still intact.

Ariana grew up experiencing discrimination in Japan mainly due to the color of her skin. But instead of locking herself up in the stigma around it, she went on with life and now uses her platform as a national beauty queen to stand against racial prejudice.

In the interview with Al-Jazeera America below, Ariana uses her charm to challenge the long-standing norm surrounding her being a hafú or multiracial. I know that it is a culture thing in Japan. But hopefully, things will start looking up from hereon now.

Looks like someone is stepping up, and several notches at that.

Miss Universe Japan 2015 Ariana Miyamoto has started to show her new look and how. I’m loving the new hair. I’m loving the new aura. I’m loving everything about her. She has this more vibrant appeal now that can easily sway previous doubters to her side. If she keeps transforming like this, then I can’t wait to see how her pre-arrival photos will register.

This early, Ariana Miyamoto is making waves and juicy publicity by being the first Miss Universe Japan of color. And the controversy actually surrounds her being not Japanese enough to represent the Land of the Rising Sun in Miss Universe 2015.

But the beautiful Ariana – born to a black American father and a Japanese mother – remains unfazed. She knows deep in her heart that she is just as qualified as the more Japanese-looking women to carry the torch for the country in the biggest beauty pageant in the world.

Instead of celebrating her crown, Ariana Miyamoto is already finding the need to defend it.

Japan’s newest Miss Universe contestant broke barriers when she was recent chosen to represent her country. But because the 20-year-old is the daughter of a Japanese woman and a black man from America, some are questioning whether she really is Japanese enough to hold the title.

According to Japanese websites, comments on Twitter ranged from, “Is it okay to select a hafu to represent Japan?” to “Because this is Miss Universe Japan, don’t you think hafu are a no-no.” Hafu is a Japanese term used to refer to someone who is biracial.

In an interview with press, Miyamoto insisted that while she doesn’t “look Japanese” on the outside, on the inside, there are many Japanese things about her.

In addition to being born and raised Nagasaki, the young adult also is a Japanese citizen who can speak the language fluently.

While some critics have been vocal about their hopes of having another contestant take her spot, others have shown their support for the newly crowned beauty queen.

On GirlsChannel, a popular site that allows readers to vote on comments, some posts suggest residents were satisfied with the choice simply because she was a citizen who loves her country. “Even if you are hafu, if you have Japanese citizenship, then you’re Japanese,” one commenter shared.

While waiting for the Miss Universe completion to be held next January, Miyamoto is just trying to keep her eyes on the prize and remain focused on representing her country in the best way possible.

“The world competition is going to be tough,” she told Rocket News 24. “But I’ll believe in myself and continue doing my best.”

I’m pretty sure Donald Trump is very happy with the free publicity being generated by Ariana. And if she continues to be in the news, I don’t see why she would not be given more attention during the next Miss Universe edition. A shoo-in for the semifinals, perhaps?

But really, how do you feel about the whole issue? If you ask me, I am on the side of Miss Universe Japan 2015 on this one. She is very much deserving of the title. Watch her catwalk video below during the Miss Nagasaki competition prior to the nationals.

image This is interesting. Japan has finally crowned a woman of color as its next representative to Miss Universe.

20 year-old Ariana Miyamoto from Sasebo, Nagasaki is the daughter of a Black American father and a Japanese mother. And she could be one of the Asian candidates in Miss Universe 2015 who will spur much interest among pageant fans.
