The Norasingh-inspired National Costume to be worn by Miss Thailand-Universe Chanyasorn Sakornchan in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Will Thailand win another Miss Universe Special Award for National Costume via Chanyasorn “Fah” Sakornchan? Gut feel tells me that another country might clinch the same for 2011.
The photo above shows the Norasingh-inspired creation that will be paraded in Sao Paulo. And while I like everything that I see from Fah’s shoulders & up, everything from the bra top & below is – in my opinion – not a very successful fusion of the modern and the traditional.
The bra top, for one, is a bit tacky for my taste. It reminds me of one of Madonna’s Gaultier-created stage costume during the 90s, though without the pointed tips which have been flattened to look like circular gold icings on top of a cupcake. And what remains of the supposed tail of the half-human, half-lion Norasingh is now a figurative take in the form of a gold oversized table runner with one end tightly wrapped and knotted around Fah’s waist and the other end flowing like a wedding train that can be played with while gliding down the stage. The footwear is high-heeled punkish and not the most graceful to walk with.
I feel that 50% of the design was overthought or the whole thing was collaborated upon by several designers who strapped together their respective contributions to the finished product. Sometimes, creativity need not be boundless, especially if the designer/s can’t seem to achieve satisfaction after sleeping over what has already been finished or finalized the day before.
Anyways, I still believe that this National Costume will be a contender. The very regal headdress and the inverted golden arch resting on Fah’s collarbone to frame her beautiful face are winners. 😉
Thailand has always excelled in their National Costumes. Owing to a rich culture and heritage that remains in place all over the country up to now, there’s no question as to how and why their local designers can come up with the most amazing concepts to share with the world.
In recent years, the country has upped the ante, so to speak. Instead of just contracting true-blue fashion professionals, the organizers conduct an annual contest in search for the best design for a National Costume to be fielded in Miss Universe. And here, anyone can join for as long as creativity is shown in large doses. Last year alone, the contest received so many entries where the winner went on to finalize the fantasy traditional creation that won for Miss Thailand Universe 2010 Fonthip Watcharatrakul one of her two special awards in Las Vegas.
This year, the winning piece draws inspiration from Norasingh – a half-human, half-animal guardian spirit in Thai mythological/folkloric history. Gold statues of the same can be seen dotting Bangkok’s Grand Palace. I will surely be amazed once I get to see how the finished product would like. My Thai friend spoke to the designer who is just about putting the final touches prior to showing the same to the Press before Miss Thailand Universe 2011 Chanyasorn Sakornchan leaves for Sao Paulo in a week’s time.
Watch out for the unveiling very soon! 😉

Now let’s fast forward to July 2011…
Fah's style and confidence have obviously improved!
My Thai-Filipino friend in Bangkok just confirmed with me that Miss Thailand Universe 2011 Chanyasorn ‘Fah’ Sakornchan is now a new woman. He intimated that their Miss Universe 2011 bet has already been ‘improved’ and more than ready to face the competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
How do you like the brand-new Fah? The surgical changes are not really too obvious (her predecessor, Fonthip, had more significant alterations) for the superficially discerning eye, but if you look closely, you can ‘sniff’ something that got streamlined as well as ‘bump’ into twins that were made more va-va-voom.
Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against such enhancements for as long as done responsibly. And if Fah’s fighting chance gets multiplied, then I say go! For the once-rugged and jumpsuit-wearing lass who spent some years studying in the US and spending hours in a midwest farm, this high-flying Thai (she can operate a plane) might just go more places, starting with Brazil and beyond.
Good luck, Fah! 🙂
