From Pageantry to Pilotry: Capt. Chezka Carandang

This is an interesting account of a lady who progressively achieved her dreams in life. Prior to entering pageantry, she simply wanted to become a commercial model or a showbiz personality.

Last 2015, she took part in Miss Philippines Earth where she represented Quezon City. After that, she went straight to training with Philippine Airlines and became a Cabin Crew. Shortly after, she planned the ultimate goal of becoming a Commercial Pilot. She is now called Captain Chezka Carandang at Cebu Pacific.

Four of the rumored familiar faces who are considering Miss World Philippines 2017 as their next pageant route


Talks are starting to get louder about the ladies who are planning/considering to join Miss World Philippines 2017. While nothing is set in stone for their eventual signing-up yet, there are discussions in pageant circles that four of the potential enlisters are as follows:

1) Laura Victoria Lehmann – Bb. Pilipinas 2014 1st Runner-Up and ABS-CBN Sports Courtside Reporter

2) Janela Joy Cuaton – Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism Metropolitan International 2016 and Miss Tourism Metropolitan International 2016 1st Runner-Up

3) Jona Sweett – Miss Philippines Earth Eco-Tourism 2015 and the muse of Caticlan-based Fashion Designer Adriano Samar

4) Steffi Rose Pearson Aberasturi – the Cebu-based beauty who comes from the popular Aberasturi clan. She was crowned Reyna ng Aliwan 2014 where she represented the Sinulog Festival

As I have stated above, their possible joining is not 100% so far, but coming close to it if all things fall in the right places in the weeks to come.

When Chanel Olive Thomas started her journey as your #Binibini22 of Bb. Pilipinas 2017, it was preceded by almost two qualifying years that started when she participated and was named Miss Air during Miss Philippines Earth 2015. Residency was a must and she set herself up to establishing the Philippines as her home base ever since she flew from Down Under to realize the dream of being part of the nationals and hopefully wearing the country’s sash in an international pageant. I finally tracked her down late yesterday and threw in the two questions that I have asked the other ladies for this second round of features about them.

1) Pageant fans have installed you as one of the several favorites for this year’s titles. But still, you cannot do away with the doubters. What can they expect from you within the next couple of weeks to erase their reservations and become total Chanel converts?

“I believe that there will always be doubters but I humbly say that if this is my destiny, it will come to pass. I trust God and his plans for my life so I just promise to you all that everyday, I will keep giving it my 100%. That everyday I am improving and growing into the best version of myself. A person that is capable and worthy to be one of this year’s titleholders and represent her country internationally.”

2) In just over two weeks from now, a new set of Bb. Pilipinas titleholders will be crowned. Why should you be one of them?

“I am 100% committed to this, and I want nothing more than to represent my country internationally. I want to use my journey to the crown to inspire and empower young girls and women to be the best version of themselves, and that’s what motivates me every single day.”

From Miss Philippines Earth, Chanel will endeavor to become your Bb. Pilipinas


When Chanel Olive Thomas won Miss Philippines Air back in 2015, becoming a Binibining Pilipinas was still farthest from her mind. She knew the strict residency requirements of BPCI and if she really wanted to, she needed to “Filipinize” her Aussie way of life such that she made the firm resolve to stay put in the country and call the Philippines her home. And so, here she is now, your Binibini 22 for Bb. Pilipinas 2017.

Here is how Olive sums herself up in a nutshell:
“Hi everyone, my name is Chanel Olive Villamator Thomas. I am a very proud Filipino/Australian. I grew up in Australia but three years ago I moved home to The Philippines. It has the been the best decision that I have ever made.

My vision and purpose for joining Binibini is because I want to use this as a platform to use my voice and my experiences to inspire and empower young girls and women to whole heartedly believe in themselves and to follow their dreams.

I feel very blessed to have been chosen as an official candidate. It is an amazing opportunity and I am giving it my 100%.”

Chanel could be considered a strong dark horse for this year’s nationals. She is tall, beautiful and eloquent. At the age of 26, her chances may have already been narrowed down to just a few titles at stake. But still, she will fight to take home a crown late next month.

Crossing over from MPE to BBP, Chanel Olive Thomas is

Okay, you might be wondering what the 1.0 (B) stands for in my code in the title and photo grid above. B is for Binibini. And this being the first time that Fil-Aussie beauty Chanel Olive Thomas will try her luck in Bb. Pilipinas, I thought it best to classify her as such. Having been part of Miss Philippines Earth 2015 as Miss Air during Angelia Ong’s reign, she is one of the first reported cross-overs who will join the beauty fray in the big league this 2017.

Olive is a sweet and classy lady alright. She has this charm about her that makes people chill when talking or simply exhanging pleasantries with her. Tall and modelesque, she has made the rounds of different fashion shows, while having been modeled for the SM Store in the past. She also started her own personal fashion blog in the past about building up a wardrobe on a shoestring budget.

We all know that Olive also crossed beauty camps from KF to Aces. Will this move prove more successful? Fingers crossed.

Alyanna Mikaela Cagandahan


The group used to be a quintet. Now they are a sextet. Six ladies from Aces & Queens are now in the running for Miss World Philippines 2016 – Catriona Gray, Sandra Lemonon, Arienne Louise Calingo, Ralph Lauren Asuncion, Vinie Camille Dy Quiangco and the newest addition – Alyanna Mikaela Cagandahan.

You will remember Alyanna as an Official Candidate of Miss Philippines Earth 2015 who became one of its several runners-up and eventually formed part of its singing group, Miss Philippines Earth Angels.

Now she’s setting her sights on another crown and this lady from Laguna is not about to go into the challenge just for the experience.

Let’s see what Alyanna has in store for everyone in MWP2016! 🙂

Tonight at the UP Theater in Diliman, Angelia Ong will relinquish one of her two major titles – Miss Philippines Earth. And it has been a beautiful journey from the time she won the right to represent the country in Miss Earth 2015 and eventually winning the bigger crown aside from accomplishing a rare back-to-back victory with her predecessor Jamie Herrell.

Allow me now to pay a beautiful homage to the ever so warm and vibrant lady who brought more than just a voice for Mother Earth. She went out of her way to add substance to the title and spearheaded a number of environmental projects that stamped her commitment to the cause of the pageant.

I can still vividly remember the pressure running inside her head (and heart) about going to Vienna but promising to bring back the crown to the Philippines. And she did. “We will because we can” was her battlecry. And the judges saw how much qualified she is to succeed Jamie.

Angelia in Almodal Haute Couture

On top of being an Earth Warrior, Angelia also continued with her modelling and endorsements (like the Almodal photos you can see all over this post). She is queenly but always down-to-Earth (pun intended). There is never a dull moment in her company as she always regales people around her with stories and opinions that further show her smarts. She is a real asset of Carousel Productions and an effective titleholder at that.

image It was a long flight to Vienna, Austria for Miss Philippines Earth 2015 Angelia Ong. She flew KLM, hence, the need to still land in Amsterdam Schipol Airport for a layover before finally connecting to her Amsterdam-Vienna segment that landed her safely in Flughafen Wien-Schwechat (or Vienna International Airport, if you will).

Angelia was met by relatives and some members of the Ilonggo community in the Austrian capital. A couple of days with them is in order before officially checking-in for Miss Earth 2015 as Miss Philippines.

From there, our bet will go on beast mode for the competition. And I can’t wait till the start of the Battle of the Earth Warriors. 😉

FB_IMG_1446605463550~2 Time is ticking fast, and before you know it, Miss Philippines Earth 2015 Angelia Ong will be departing for Vienna, Austria to be the Philippine representative in Miss Earth 2015.

Angelia has been quite a busy bee the past month – getting her entry visa to the host nation, assembling her wardrobe for the competition, more fittings and filming her Eco-Beauty Video inside the Carousel Mansion in Mandaluyong City.

Watch her vid now. I love how Angelia was able to use her good communication skills to the fullest, delivering fluid messages about her environmental advocacy and encouraging people to take part in the 4Rs (Rethink,Reuse, Reduce and Recycle) and the continued greening of the country.

Her upcoming date with destiny for Miss Earth 2015 is fast approaching, and she has been preparing long and hard. Not only are the prospects of a back-to-back victory making it doubly challenging for her, she will no longer enjoy any kind of homecourt advantage unlike her predecessors who have been host delegates for the longest of time.

But I trust Angelia to deliver a masterful gamelan that will continue to make Miss Philippines shine in Vienna, Austria for Miss Earth 2015. And this proud Ilongga-Manileña will show to the competition that she is a force to reckon with. Not only with her string of environmental causes and charity work, but also with her kind of beauty and charm. 🙂
