Mariel with Miss Japan Tsutsui Natsuki
Miss Philippines Mariel de Leon wore a John Herrera gown for the Welcome Dinner of Miss International 2017. And yes, she is looking oh-so-lovely in blue!
Agree or disagree?
P.S. Mariel’s photo on the left is a selfie with host delegate Tsutsui Natsuki who is half-Filipina.
Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa (in black gown) leads the 2017 Press Conference
Earlier, the Miss International 2017 Press Conference was held with the reigning titleholder Kylie Verzosa leading the Ceremony which officially welcomed all the candidates.
Miss Philippines Mariel de Leon, looking quite refreshing in a Japanese kimono (as were all the participants), is in high spirit and raring to go full blast with the competition.
More on Miss International 2017 soon!

And Bb. Pilipinas International 2017 Mariel de Leon is off to Tokyo, Japan to represent the country in Miss International 2017. She was seem at the airport by mentor Jonas Gaffud, father Christopher de Leon, brother Gab and selected members of the media. She will aim for a back-to-back but is not totally pressured by the prospect and wants to enjoy the entire journey – this being her first trip to the Land of the Rising Sun.
Let us give our support to Mariel in her mission for the country.
Last night at the Victory Foodpark in Parañaque, I got the chance to personally meet Natsuki Tsutsui, the 24 year-old Therapist from Tokyo who holds the title Miss International Japan 2016-2017 and preparing to compete in the upcoming edition of Miss International 2017 alongside our very own Mariel de Leon on November 14.
There is something very enchanting about this beauty – who happens to be part-Filipino (her mother is Cebuana) – and exudes a very engaging personality that is easily endearing upon first introduction. She is also statuesque. Measuring at 5’10”, she catches the attention of many onlookers and never lets up. The minute she smiles, the charm starts rushing in like a Shinkansen train.
Nicknamed “Naki”, she is serious about winning the Mikimoto crown for her home country. Having been orphaned at an early age, her advocacy is a combination of the ideal and the actual. She wants to spread hope and happiness to abandoned/neglected children and help in easing the challenge of growing up parent-less. On the other side, she is also committed to use the title as a platform to help lessen the suicide rate of young Japanese by coming up with a foundation/support group that will guide their emotional and physical upkeep.
Looking forward to seeing this stunning Japanese lass gear up for the big fight ahead. She is the host delegate and plans to be the warmest and friendliest big sister ever.
Two days from now, a (Strictly Invitational) Three-in-One Official Send-Off is scheduled to take place for our 2017 Queens where Bb. Pilipinas-International Mariel de Leon, Bb. Pilipinas-Grand International Elizabeth Clenci and Bb. Pilipinas-Globe Nelda Ibe will take the spotlight ahead of their three other sisters. Their respective international pageants will be happening close enough to each other, with Miss Grand International 2017 in Phu Quoc, Vietnam on October 25, The Miss Globe 2017 in Tirana, Albania on November 4 and Miss International 2017 in Tokyo, Japan on November 14.
It’s going to be another busy month of blogging here at normannorman.com with the anticipated participations of the three signaling the start of the bigger competition season for all our national titleholders.
Where our Queens will be going, map-wise
And with the confirmation of the 66th Miss Universe in Las Vegas on November 26 and Miss Supranational 2017 in Poland on December 1, expect a double send-off for Rachel Peters and Chanel Olive Thomas getting scheduled by the latter half of October.
These are heavy days for Jonas Gaffud and the four (4) beauty queens he is almost simultaneously polishing and preparing for their respective international pageants that will take place in just one month’s time.
First to do battle is Reina Hispanoamericana Filipinas 2017 Teresita Ssen “Wyn” Marquez who will go to La Paz, Bolivia for her mission which has a November 4 finals date.
Next in line is Bb. Pilipinas International 2017 Mariel de Leon who will put her game plan into motion the minute she sets foot in Tokyo, Japan for Miss International 2017 happening on November 14.
Third to compete (and overlapping with Miss International due to its longer pre-pageant period) is Miss World Philippines 2017 Laura Lehmann traveling to Sanya where she will disprove the thoughts of many that there is always a slim chance for a Filipina winning once the host city is in Mainland China. Miss World 2017 will be elected on November 18.
And last but certainly not the least is Bb. Pilipinas Supranational 2017 Chanel Olive Thomas and her trip to Krynica Zdrój, Nowy Sącz, Poland for Miss Supranational 2017 with a December 1 finals playdate.
This is certainly not an enviable task for the beauty queen-maker. But Jonas is taking everything with a smile on his face. This is what he does best. And he will make sure that all four ladies will be in tiptop shape for their respective assignments.

Mariel’s date with destiny – just like the other Bb. Pilipinas 2017 Queens – is slowly approaching. We’re nearing the last month of this quarter. And by mid-October, she will be in a beehive of activities in final preparations for her trip to Japan where the finals of Miss International 2017 is set for (tentatively) November 14.
In the meantime, enjoy her latest images. Be ready for the ultimate transformation for her mission within the next two months.
Mariel with leading man Coco Martin
Look who’s going to be the next leading lady of actor Coco Martin in Star Cinema’s remake of “Ang Panday” for the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival – it’s Bb. Pilipinas International 2017 Mariel de Leon!
This is going to be the first big movie break of our Bb. Pilipinas queen and in a love interest role to one of the country’s top film and TV actors at that. I am pretty sure Mariel is excited about the project. I just hope that the principal photography and post-production demands won’t interfere with her training and preparations for Miss International 2017.
Congratulations, Mariel! 🙂
If this holds water soon, then I would really be genuinely thrilled
Unlike my previous blog post, the initiative on holding Miss International 2017 in Manila is something that started from small talks that allegedly originated from the country’s Department of Tourism. And 15 hours before Christmas, I am telling you now that if everything goes beyond loose lip service and a Philippine delegation flies to Tokyo, Japan to make formal negotiations, then I would be genuinely thrilled for the dream event becoming a reality.
The now extinct Miss Young International competition has been held in the Philippines twice and consecutively from 1980 to 1981. Wouldn’t it just be more exciting to see the surviving Japan-based pageant (that has honored the Filipina six times now) to finally land on our shores? And with Kylie Verzosa as the reigning titleholder, crowning her successor here would be the real icing on the cake.
Start your comments now, dear readers. And Merry Christmas as well! My December 25 feature will be truly image-filled! 😉
