Once a Mutya, Forever a Queen: 50 Years of Mutya ng Pilipinas

This blog entry will read like a throwback within a throwback. Just like Binibining Pilipinas, Mutya ng Pilipinas has already reached its Golden Anniversary last 2018 – fairly more recent but still full of pride and glory. For a national pageant to successfully make it through five decades is an achievement that stood the test of time. And its long list of titleholders and international winners gave their share to the country’s performance record in other beauty competitions – prime of which were Miss Asia Quest-turned- Miss Asia Pacific Quest-turned-Miss Asia Pacific International, Miss Tourism International and during selected periods – Miss World, Miss Intercontinental, Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International, Miss Tourism Metropolitan International, Queen of Clubs International and Best Model of the World.

And just to complete the throwback, allow me to share the grand opening number and crowning moments of the 50th Mutya ng Pilipinas held at the Mall of Asia Arena last September, 2018. This was a monumental effort spearheaded by then President Hemilyn Escudero-Tamayo (right photo with Joy Arguil and I) who pulled out all the stops to make the production her farewell legacy for the pageant institution.

Here’s good news to those who missed the old Miss Asia-Pacific International (a spin-off from Miss Asia-Pacific Quest). The beauty competition, which had its last edition in Guangzhou, China way back 2005, will make a big return to the global pageant scene this year.

The organizers of Miss Asia Pacific International, an international pageant that runs for 36 years is making a big comeback. Originally organized by the Miss Asia Pacific Quest ( who also owned Mutya Ng Pilipinas).

The Miss Asia Pacific International Pageant wa launched in 1968, originally as the “Miss Asia Quest” with 18 partiicpating countries. The annual pageants were held in the Philippines, Malaysia, New Zealand and Hongkong, featuring various resort destinations and tourist havens of the host countries.

In 1984, when New Zealand hosted the 16th pageant in Christchurch, countries from Central and South America, including the USA and Canada participated. In 1985, Miss Asia exprienced its first milestone and transformed into the “Miss Asia Pacific Quest” when close to 40 countries participated in the glittery pageant held for the first time and the next four years thereafter in Hongkong.

Leonora Jimenez-Monge of Costa Rica, the last Miss Asia-Pacific International to be crowned in 2005.

The most recent milestone was attained when China hosted the 36th international pageant in Guangdong Province and the city of Guangzhou from March 15 to April 6, 2005 with the participation of 53 countries from all over the world.

Today, MISS ASIA PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL has a network of 87 countries and territories and is acknowledged as the first and oldest international beauty pageant in Asia.

Miss Asia Pacific Interantional is governed by its original Board of Directors, namely ALFONSO V. LIM JR as its Chairman and CEO, ROBERTO DE VENECIA, President; LAURO M. AMANTE, Treasurer and LEANDRO D. ENRIQUEZ, Founder and Director . They are distinguished personalities stemming from various sectors of society.
