Miss International 1991 Agnieszka Kotlarska and her court
Since it is a Black Saturday, allow me to share this throwback blog about the tragic death of Polish Agnieszka Kotlarska
who won Miss International 1991. She was murdered a few years after. The entire “stalking” scenario that led to a bloody end is detailed below in a quoted information. Unlike the untimely demises of Miss Venezuela 2004 Monica Spear (due to an attempted robbery
) and Bb. Pilipinas International 2009 Melody Gersbach (due to a car accident
), this one played out like the script from a movie that spanned more than a few years in plot.
But first, let us watch her crowning moment in Japan.
Agnieszka Kotlarska was a model in 1990 when a persistent stalker entered her life. The brunette with the perfect smile never dreamed that he, a man called Jerzy, would give her only six more years to live. While he kept stalking, Kotlarska did well in her professional and personal life. She became Miss Poland and was crowned in 1991 as Miss International. Kotlarska married, which did not sit well with Jerzy, who later told police that by marrying someone else she had “ruined his life.” After winning Miss Poland, Kotlarska pursued a successful career as a fashion model in the US, working with big names such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. She also appeared in Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and Playboy.
After three years, Kotlarska returned to Poland with her husband and daughter. It wasn’t long before her stalker started doing his creepy thing again, constantly calling and hanging around her house. Her husband understandably had had enough. On the night of August 27, 1996, when the family was getting into their car and Jerzy approached them, Kotlarska’s husband intercepted the stalker. The two men started struggling, which ended with Jerzy stabbing the other man in the leg with a hunting knife. Kotlarska ran to her husband’s aid, but Jerzy stabbed her viciously in the chest four times. The police arrested the 36-year-old computer programmer at his home where he immediately confessed. Kotlarska later died in hospital from her wounds. For taking the life of a young mother, Jerzy was sent to prison for a mere 14 years.
The main man himself, Jojo Bragais
My favorite maker of pageant heels – Jojo Bragais of BRAGAIS™ – has done it again. In the latest collection below, he is paying homage to eight (8) of our national beauty queens who trace their roots to the Bicol Region – Bea Rose Santiago, Bianca Guidotti, Melody Gersbach (+), Valerie Weigmann, Christi Lynn McGarry, Yvethe Santiago, Diane Necio and Miriam Quiambao.
In his own words, Jojo stated that “…I wanna start the day by giving Tribute to all Bicolana Beauty Queens. Bicolanos by nature love beautiful things that is why people seem addicted to pageantry all over the region. And since I am a proud Bicolano, these next set of pageant heels are specially made to honor them because they will never be forgotten and will always be remembered QUEENS…”
Do check out the final products of the new designs that inspired Jojo in his new pieces.

The Daragang Magayon 2015, which forms part of the Daragang Magayon Festival in Legazpi City, Albay, has always been a favorite regional beauty pageant of mine. For one, it has always been a rich source of beautiful Bicolanas who have the promising potentials of becoming candidates in national competitions like the Bb. Pilipinas, Miss Philippines Earth and Miss World Philippines. In the recently concluded Bb. Pilipinas 2015 alone, Binibinis Mae Liezel Ramos, Princess Joy Camu, Ina Dominica Guerrero and Marvi Ann de Lima are proud products of the said tilt. But the more popular ones include Bb. Pilipinas Supranational 2014 Yvethe Santiago and the late Bb. Pilipinas International 2009 Melody Gersbach.
And with the formal opening of this year’s festival on April 6 at the Albay Astrodome, here now are the twenty (20) Official Candidates for this year’s crown (Photos by Tyrone John). They are vying to become the successor of reigning winner Jacqueline Bernarte in the finals scheduled for April 28.
Below now are my early favorites to do well in the finals scheduled late next month.
My early choices from among the twenty are 1) Carmela Michelle Dolmer of Daet, Camarines Norte
Six of my early favorites for Daragang Magayon 2015
2) Francia Layderos of Libon, Albay
3) Claire Armena of Legazpi City
4) Marie Sherry Ann Tormes of Nabua, Camarines Sur
5) Christine Arnedo of Legazpi City
6) Jenicca Jeremias of Ligao City

Bb. Pilipinas titleholders who have passed away
Since November 1 is All Saints Day and today is All Souls’ Day, I decided to have this short feature posted as a Senti Sunday Special for November 2 so that it will be more appropriate for what is being observed.
I also took the liberty of sharing once more the In Memoriam video above of the seven (7) Bb. Pilipinas titleholders who have already left us. It was shown during Bb. Pilipinas Gold.
To Myrna, Pinky, Teresa, Chat, Josephine, Sheela Mae and Melody, you may no longer be in our midst, but each one of you gave us reasons to smile and/or be proud when you proudly represented the Philippines in pageants abroad. 🙂
The late Bb. Pilipinas International 2009 Melody Adelheid Gersbach
Today is the 4th death anniversary of Bb. Pilipinas International 2009 Melody Gersbach who met an untimely death a little more than a year after she was crowned. This sweet and radiant Bicolana
– who represented us in Miss International 2009 and placed among the Top 15 used to be one of the brightest Binibini titleholders in modern times. But then, she was gone too soon. If only. If only.
We know that you are an angel in heaven now, smiling down at us and the successes of the Philippines in the World of Pageantry.
We still miss you, Melody! We really do.
The Dazzling Dozen of A&Q for Bb. Pilipinas 2014 (Photo collage courtesy of paooap)
These twelve ladies – who I lovingly call the ‘Dazzling Dozen’ – are the ones left to put up a good fight for Aces & Queens in Bb. Pilipinas 2014. While some of the camp’s key individuals expressed their big disappointment at the non-inclusion of Jeane Louise Flores and Carla Lizardo, it’s time to move on and focus on the mission at hand: to keep the Miss Universe Philippines crown and possibly make it two with another major title. You see, they have not landed a Bb. Pilipinas International winner since the late Melody Gersbach back in 2009 (curiously the last year Kagandahang Flores got hold of Bb. Pilipinas-Universe in the person of Bianca Manalo). And I’m sure they would be more than happy getting the top two placements for this edition.
So does Aces & Queens have the potential Miss Universe Philippines and Bb. Pilipinas-International victors in them? 😉
Mutya Johanna Datul is distinctly local, while Krisma Pascual is Latina-styled. (Photo credit: OPMB Worldwide)
Now here’s an interesting pair of Versus ladies. And correct me if I’m wrong, but they come from the same handlers who do are not identified among A&Q, KF or Team JDV. And whoever is responsible for their training is definitely showing loads of potentials in beauty polishing Both Mutya Johanna Datul and Ma. Cristina Ann ‘Krisma’ Pascual are, simply put, gorgeous in two different – but completely likeable – ways.
Mutya has always been one magnetic looker ever since her Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012 stint. And because she surprisingly failed to snatch one of the titles there, it paved the way for her to quickly jump ship and swim her way to Bb. Pilipinas shores. And now, she is quite leisurely cruising her journey to become an Official Candidate en route to a possible crown or major placement. Will she succeed? Gut feel tells me that this 5’8″ eye candy will shine well in the pageant. She could be a solid pick for Miss International representation. Problem is, her training ‘sister’ is likewise a good peg for the same competition. So what happens now to………
Krisma Pascual? The girl who jolted a healthy number among us when she was first featured here as the former Miss PSBA (QC) with a very Latina vibe. Just stare at her two photos in this post and you can easily mistake her for a candidate in either Belleza Mexico or Colombia. And up to now, I could not verify what her true lineage is. Is she half-this or half-that? But for sure, she has this foreign mix running in her blood. And that’s the reason why she is a possibility for the Japan-based competition. There is a hint of Melody Gersbach (+) and Nicole Schmitz in her aura. I can’t vouch for her speaking abilities yet. But if she turns out to be a complete package, then watch out, frontrunners!
Bottomline for Mutya and Krisma? I’d say one of them is going to be a firm favorite. For now, I’m going for Mutya. 😉
