During Bb. Pilipinas 1980, there were three particular candidates I was wildly cheering for. First was the daughter of a family friend, Ma. Concepcion Roa, who entered the semifinals. The next, of course, was Rosario Silayan (being Mama Renee Salud’s ward and the daughter of actor Vic Silayan). The third was this beautiful and bosomy Zamboangueña named Maria Asuncion “Mara” Spirig who I thought would win Bb. Pilipinas International instead of Diana Jean Chiong. Mara went on to become Miss Maja Pilipinas 1980 and represented us during the international competition held in Mallorca, Spain. She may not have won or placed in the Top 5, but her beauty is one I feel was slightly ahead of her time. She has this semblance to both Miss Universe 1975 4th Runner-Up Chiqui Brosas and Mutya ng Pilipinas World 1977 Melissa “Peachy” Veneracion. Below is a rare retro clip of her time in Spain.
