Not a bad time for Miss World and Miss International, for sure. But For Miss Universe, it certainly was
The Bb. Pilipinas 2020 titleholders – Joanna Penalosa, Nina Alagao and Katherine Annwen de Guzman
. Never was there a decade in the entire MU history that the Philippines neither placed nor grabbed a runner-up position. Name the decade, we have cited representatives – the 50s, the 60s, the 70s, the 80s and the 90s. For the uninitiated, Blesilda Ocampo was the first Miss Philippines who advanced to the semifinals when she made the Top 16 during the 1954 edition.
As for the years 2000-2009, the Philippines was clearly wiped out and remained in the background (or backstage) after the first cuts were made – from Nina Ricci Alagao in Cyprus all the way to Bianca Manalo in the Bahamas (insert Zorayda Andam, Karen Agustin, Carla Balingit, Maricar Balagtas, Gionna Cabrera, Lia Andrea Ramos, Theresa Licaros and Jennifer Barrientos in between). Let us now watch the Bb. Pilipinas 2000 edition which many pageant enthusiasts claim as the year that started the dark years of the country in our all-time favorite beauty pageant.

Well, well, well. What do we have here? A new book authored by three of our former Binibinis titled “The Secrets of Beauty Queens” has been published. Bb. Pilipinas International 2006 Denille Valmonte, Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman and Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2002 Karen Agustin – collectively known as DLK – have entered a new chapter in their lives by pooling together their personal pageant experiences and injecting important tips and advices on how to prepare for beauty competitions and the like.

The book should be an interesting read, especially to pageant fans and aficionados looking for alternative resources on the subject matter. Kudos to the three ladies for the new achievement.
Published by Dave Almarinez, “The Secrets of Beauty Queens” can be initially bought at all Fully Booked branches. It will also be made available as an e-book through Amazon.com. A book signing tour will follow. Keep updated by visiting their Facebook fan page and Twitter account. 😉
The Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Screening Committee
In their hands, the fate of the Top 61 Bb. Pilipinas 2014 contenders are placed in. They will decide on who’s in or who’s out.
Madame Stella Marquez de Araneta heads the screeners with her amigas Conchitina Sevilla Bernardo and Betsy Westendorf, plus a string of former Bb. Pilipinas titleholders like Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman, Carlene Aguilar, Karen Agustin, Venus Raj and the like.
Do you think the three elders have their own selections that differ from the younger ones? Or will the latter push hard for the ones they believe will excel internationally? 😉
