Agnes Padao Jakosalem won Grandma Universe 2017 in Sofia, Bulgaria
Agnes with Ovette Ricalde
Just when everyone is going crazy about the 65th Miss Universe right here in Manila, a 51 year-old grandmother from Consolacion, Cebu outclassed the competition in Sofia, Bulgaria to win Grandma Universe 2017 last January 21. So it would be safe to say that between that – for nine (9) days till the morning if January 30 – the Philippines held both Miss Universe and Grandma Universe titles.
Originally hailing from Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte, Agnes is the mother of three children and is the Lola of a 7 year-old granddaughter. A charity-driven individual, she is active with the Bukas Loob sa Diyos, a Catholic Charismatic Community which raises funds to help the less fortunate.
In Sofia, Agnes was joined by Maryrose Salubre who was named Mrs Classic Galaxy in the Classic Universe category (for participants 40 years-old and above but still without a grandchild) so it’s a double celebration of sorts.
Kudos to our Grandma Universe 2017, including the Philippine license holder for the contest Ovette Ricalde and pageant trainor Tatta Saguin.

Congratulations, Agnes Padao Jakosalem!
Coverage photographer Joseph Gerard Jose, your blogger and coverage partner Joy Arguil in front of the 65th Miss Universe Media Center
normannorman.com’s coverage of the 65th Miss Universe wasn’t the easiest to fulfill. But amidst the daily stress and intermittent moments that were humbling in nature, we emerged from the whole experience unscathed, with nerves of steel and leveled-up patience.
Thanks to my coverage partner Joy Arguil who has learned to adjust to my relative quirks, and to our new team member Joseph Gerard V. Jose who is being gradually ushered in to the world of pageantry in both the national and international stages.
To Miss Universe Philippines 2016 Maria Mika Maxine Medina who added a Top 6 finish in the competition to her list of achievements, always keep your head held high because you represented the country so splendidly well. Do not let the bashers get into you because they will never ever experience the wonders of being part of the most beautiful event in the Universe.
To Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, best of luck in your journey as a newly signed-up talent of WME/IMG.
And to Iris Mittenaere, may you have a most magical reign that will keep the Miss Universe brand strong and worth looking forward to in decades to come.
On behalf of Joy and Joseph, this is your tireless and peripatetic blogger now signing off from the 65th Miss Universe Pageant.
Next stop: Bb. Pilipinas 2017!

Below are the forty (40) Official Candidates of Miss Global 2016 in shots taken by Joy Arguil during the Press Presentation yesterday.
From Armenia to Iran
From Israel to Vietnam
Now if the finals will take place two days from now, then below is my selection of the Top 14 (I intentionally chose that number just to give way to a potential surprise qualifier who is outside my radar at the moment), ranked according to impressions gathered from their presentation and my table-hopping among the ladies afterwards. I decided to go into quick small talks to get clearer gut-feels of each one – either in a group huddle or dedicated chat.
My Top 5 right now
6th to 14th places in my opinion for now
The way I sized them up so far, Caitlynn Henry of Australia and Camille Hirro of the Philippines could be locking horns from now till the finals. But that could be considered premature by some. Still, I see them as the strongest so far. Britt Rekkedal of Norway (who is part-Filipino) will perform well, and could go for a three-way tie for top place if she executes her game plan accordingly. I just feel that – among the three – Miss Philippines is miles ahead in terms of public speaking and interview skills.
Completing my early Top 5 are Angela Bonilla of Ecuador and Linnea Johansson of Sweden. I won’t be surprised if there will be scene-stealers in the making among my 6th-14th placers. From those remainders, I am putting my bets on Ukraine, Thailand and Kenya. They each have their unique personalities that could work for the needs of the organization. We’ll see.
So that’s a wrap for now! 😉
