Hawa Kamara of Sierra Leone is all set for the 65th Miss Universe!
Hawawa Awa Hawa Kamara of Sierra Leone is the very first from her country to participate in a Miss Universe competition. And everyone knows by now the obstacle she needed to go through to raise enough funds for her to be able to fly to Manila. That part has already been secured. And with the pooled efforts of several of our fashion and accessories designers (see photo below listing all their names
), her wardrobe is now complete!
25 years of age, Hawa reigned as Miss West Africa International 2013 and has involved herself with various charity organisations as well as founding her ‘Gal Pikin for Betteh‘ charity that focuses on educating the girl child in Sierra Leone. There are also talks that she may enter the film industry after passing the auditions for a role that will pave the way for her debut on the big screen.
Hawa Kamara is extremely excited with the upcoming competition
The Designers who pooled their efforts to make it happen for Hawa Kamara
Just last night, Hawa was given her formal send-off to the 65th Miss Universe by her national organizers. And very soon, she will be ready to depart her beloved country to make history in the pageant as the first Miss Sierra Leone.
Hawa is sleek on the runway and has transformed her style into a fiercer version that will make heads turn in the Philippines. Are you liking her, dear readers?
You can see the changes in Hawa by watching the video below.

With the fresh win of Kylie Verzosa in Tokyo as Miss International 2016, Bb. Pilipinas Supranational 2016 Joanna Eden is highly motivated to go for the big win in Slovakia and Poland for Miss Supranational 2016. By early November (or on the 9th to be exact), she will have her official send-off along with Bb. Pilipinas Globe 2016 Nichole Manalo.
The momentum is definitely on the side of the Philippines. And this is why all our beauty queens have the invisible targets on their backs the minute they set foot in the host cities to compete.
International pageantry is not for the weak-willed. And Joanna knows that all too well by now. She will go to Europe armed with strong preparations and the nerves of steel to weather the cold climate and the piercing eyes of the other delegates.
I have noticed how much bashings happen in message boards and pageant sites for our representatives. And it is during such exchange of harsh comments that we need to eat a slice of humble pie. We have the big crowns for ourselves. We need not stoop down and be goaded into lashing back with hurtful replies. Our ladies have the X-factor in their dutiful preparations. And those are trade secrets that do not get stolen with just the flick of a finger. If you don’t have it, then you just don’t. Let’s be happy with our successes and exercise humility the best way we can. 🙂
And to Joanna, just keep steady and do what you need to do to perfect the assembly of your armaments for Miss Supranational 2016. We got your back all the way! Kisses!
Middle of last year, I had the pleasure of meeting (and talking to) all the male and female candidates of Bodyshots Philippines 2014 during a Press Night scheduled by the organizers several days before the finals. During that activity, there was a round-robin type of interviews where members of the Press hopped from one table to the next where around six (6) contestants were seated in each. And I can vividly remember staying the longest in the last table where Arcel Yambing, Nathan Wilson, Juan Carlos Schubert, Chantal Serafica, Christienne Garcia, Catherine Legaspi and Jinlyn Talocod were assigned to. I must admit that I took special interest in then 21 year-old Jinlyn upon the special request of fellow blogger Raul Gatal who is quite proud of the girl and since they are both from Bohol. I spoke to this kooky-girlish ingenué and found her vibe very easy to relate with. I silently told myself that she will do well as a model if the breaks come her way.
As it turned out, Jinlyn did not win Bodyshots. And I did not hear much until I started seeing her getting booked for a number of modeling gigs that gradually multiplied as months passed. And almost exactly a year after the model search she thought would be the key to doors of opportunities on the runway, she turned the defeat into a challenge to do better than most of her fellow contenders. She learns fast, translates her learnings into action and adds a healthy dash of good-naturedness and hard work into the equation.
Jinlyn may not be at her peak yet, but she is doing very well as a talent for ZeModels Manila. She gets picked by fashion designers left and right. During the very recent Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2015 alone, she walked the ramp for Jian Lasala, Lyle Ibañez, JunJun Cambe, Randall Solomon and Raoul Ramirez. And for Nereku Manila last Thursday, she had four (4) appearances for Cherry Samuya Veric, Ezra Santos, Vanessa Unite and Jerome Salaya Ang. And I bet we’ll see more of her in the months and, perhaps, years to come.
Jinlyn is reliable. And in the fashion industry, that adjective speaks volumes, and gets the quick nod during go-sees and bookings.
I’m glad I was able to see her transformation. And I will definitely look forward to more of her evolution into a topnotch catwalk diva. 😉
In the just-concluded Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2015 at the SM Aura Premier, professional fashion models were not the only ones who negotiated the runway for some of the designers who participated. Even a few of our Bb. Pilipinas titleholders took part in the same. Perfect examples are Miss Universe runners-up Venus Raj and Shamcey Supsup-Lee who wore the creations of their dear friend Cherry Samuya Veric. And then there is also Bb. Pilipinas 2015 1st Runner-Up Hannah Ruth Sison who was booked in not just one, but three separate gigs for designers Jeffrey Rogador, Jian Lasala and Boyet Dysangco.
In the images by Bruce Casanova and John Co below, it just goes to show that our beauty queens can be as fierce in the catwalk as they are on the pageant stage.
