As I turn another year older tomorrow (August 11), I have come up with a shortlist of my birthday wishes. I don’t usually do this, but having a blog of my own plus anticipating a few interesting things happening within the next 365 days of my life, there is just no stopping me now. So indulge me a bit…
….i wish that our bet in the Miss Universe Pageant 2009, Bianca Manalo, will do the country proud by placing – if not winning – the competition come August 23.
…i wish that i will learn more than the basics of Survival Japanese to keep me in good stead during my planned 3rd trip to Japan (Osaka, Nara and Hiroshima) in March next year. I am slowly getting there, but I need more discipline to stick to my daily self-study lessons.
…i wish that the Philippines will have a (truly) honest, inspiring and deserving President when the Presidential Elections wind up in May 2010…
So there…and ooops, i almost forgot…..i also wish that more people will view my blog because I am elated with the steady increase in viewership everytime i check out my stats. Many thanks to those who have regularly dropped by so far.
I would be very happy seeing at least one or two of my wishes come true, but one wish granted ain’t bad at all…

NHK World English channel
I was tickled pink when NHK World joined the channel line-up of my cable provider. Some people might ask, “do you speak and understand Nihongo?” Well, no, at least not yet (I plan to slowly – and comprehensively – learn the language) but the good thing is that it has a variety of English programs or Japanese-English shows which give its viewers an interesting look into the different facets of life in Japan. I particularly like their travelogues which bring me to the remote but beautifully-landscaped areas of the country – something which can help me plan my next trip to the Land of the Rising Sun.
My favorite program, though, is titled “Out & About” where random expats (who can fluently speak Japanese) are assigned a particular city which should be explored in a day or two with a local. The nice thing about the show is the eager excitement of the segment hosts who literally go out of their way to learn everything about their city assignments. I find them amusing talking to the locals, then translating to English their conversations. The feel of the show is very relaxed and entertaining. Check out if NHK World is in your list of cable channels. Otherwise, you can visit their website at http://www.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/ where you can watch their programs round-the-clock.
By the way, the network also has a cute program which teaches non-speakers to learn basics of Japanese language. The ‘teacher’ is so friendly and engaging that you can’t help but easily catch on with her day’s lessons.
