This year, Mutya ng Pilipinas celebrates a major milestone with its continued presence in the country’s pageant history as it turns 50. Golden. And the 2018 edition promises to be record-breaking, as in more exciting – with fifty (50) Official Candidates – and far-reaching – with more Regional and Overseas Competitions to complement its biggest assembly of beautiful Filipinas ever. The gathering of all past titleholders and even joiners who did very well in other competitions will be something to look forward to.

Your blogger spoke to Mutya ng Pilipinas President Hemilyn Escudero-Tamayo (right photo with Joy & I) who is doubly enthusiastic about what’s in store for pageant fans and followers for 2018. She also shared thoughts about her inspirations in making the beauty pageant bigger than ever before.

“Madame Stella Marquez de Araneta of BPCI and Ms. Lorraine Schuck of Carousel Productions are my idols and I consider them pillars of the pageant industry. We should really be thanking them for keeping this industry alive as well as producing excellent winners. They deserve to be honored and looked up to after having earned many achievements inside and outside the country, while bringing Philippine pageantry to the highest level.”

Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism International 2017 Jannie Alipo-on

Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism International 2017 Jannie Loudette Alipo-on waited for years to finally nail a national beauty pageant crown. And now that she finally did, and preparing for her competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for Miss Tourism International 2017, she is not about to let up in her dream of wearing the country’s sash and hopefully bring another honor for the Philippines by securing another victory in the competition that has largely been favorable to our representatives through the years.

Jannie was expecting her mission abroad to run the entire month of December till New Year’s Eve, as what MTI has been doing in the past. This year, though, the finals will be held earlier – December 6 to be exact. She took it as a good opportunity to spend the Holidays Season here instead of bringing just her closest family members to the Malaysian capital.

Who will win Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017?

The 30 Official Candidates of Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017


Tomorrow night at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila, the Grand Finals of Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017 will crown three (3) new winners who will represent the country in international competitions here and abroad – Miss Asia-Pacific International 2017 in Manila, Miss Tourism International 2017/2018 in Kuala Lumpur and Top Model of the World 2018 in El Gouna, Red Sea, Egypt.

And from the lineup of thirty (30) beautiful candidates, I have trimmed them down to just twelve (12) contenders who – in my opinion – have the best chances of nailing victories, two (2) runners-up included.

Here now are my picks for the Top 12 (in the order of their assigned numbers):

Arianne Deseree Viardo of Pampanga

Sofia Sibug of Albay

Abagail Grigsby of Melbourne

Truth be told, I can come up with three more additions to the above ladies to complete a Top 15 because this is a relatively strong batch to begin with. But the dozen I cited are the ones who have performed more consistently all throughout the pre-pageant activities. From where I stand, that is.

Now cutting the twelve down to just five is tricky because I want to pick the best from among the eight (8) coming from the overseas communities first. So if there will be a Special Title of Mutya Overseas Communities, I would hand it first to either Abagail Grigsby of Melbourne or Suzanne Perez of California.

With that matter finished, I can now move ahead with my personal Top 5:

My Top 5 for Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017


The way I see it, Savannah Mari Gankiewicz of Hawaii and Jannie Loudette Alipo-on of Navotas City will face-off for the Top 2 titles. Actually, either one of them will do well in Miss Asia-Pacific International and Miss Tourism International. But at this point, I can see the latter as being the best fit for the Kuala Lumpur-based pageant. So that makes the Hawaiian lass as potential host delegate for MAPI2017 happening in our shores this coming October.

The Top Model title is and should obviously be given to a tall candidate. I can see 5’9″ Ilene Astrid de Vera of Cebu getting the nod. Actually, whoever wins this honor will have the luxury of time to prepare for the contest in Egypt next year. And the Cebuana should be able to transform herself more beautifully.

The Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017 Swimsuit Competition at Hannah’s

Jannie Alipo-on was named Mutya ng Hannah’s

Over the weekend, the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017 Swimsuit Competition was held at Hannah’s Beach Resort and Convention Center in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. The event was originally intended to unfold at the Premium Suites Poolside Area. But the uncooperative rains prompted the organizers to set up indoors at the Convention Hall. Other than that, the event went well as the thirty candidates presented themselves in two-piece swimsuits from Dollfins Swimwear, with Designer Sony Boy Mindo doing the Resort Wears for the second segment of the evening.

New leaders have emerged as Savannah Gankiewicz of Hawaii (fondly called “Moana” by the other candidates) zoomed her way to the top of the scoresheets and was named Best in Swimsuit. On the other hand, repeater Jannie Alipo-on of Navotas City is starting to show that 3rd time could be a charm after bagging both Best in Resort Wear and Mutya ng Pilipinas Hannah’s. Both ladies did very well during the preliminary judging interviews the night before and appear to be headed for front-runner status in the thick of the fight for the three crowns at stake.

Other ladies who did well were Lian Enumerable of Negros Island Region who was chosen as Mutya Photogenic, with Arianne Viardo of Pampanga and Suzanne Perez of California getting 2nd Runner-Up positions in the Swimsuit and Hannah’s categories, respectively.

Onwards now to the Regional Costume Competition which will be held at The Plaza of Resorts World Manila tomorrow night at 6pm.

At the Marquee Mall in Angeles City, Pampanga last week, the candidates of Miss Philippines Earth 2013 invaded the venue’s activity center for the beauty pageant’s evening gown competition. There were those who wore forgettable designs, but there were clear stand-outs who must have really wowed the crowd.

While I'm not in total agreement with the Gold going to Miss Mabalacat City Aura Donna Garon (extreme right), I approve of Miss Taguig City and Miss Mun. of Cabugao (middle), placing in the Top 3.

In any beauty contest, the ladies (and their respective handlers) will do anything to make themselves outshine others in the competition. And this is where some acceptable or wanting level of aesthetics come into play – good or less than good, that is.

In the recent Resort Wear competition of Miss Philippines Earth 2013 at Hotel Pontefino in Batangas, the 48 Official Candidates paraded in their own interpretation of what to wear on the beach or the poolside. Many of them came out in various renditions of the standard two-piece swimwear. But for four of them, their attires raised not a few eyebrows. And for one (who appears to have been more tastefully styled by her scout), she went on to stamp her superiority by claiming Best in Resort Wear. She is Jannie Loudette Alipo-on of Cabugao, Ilocos Sur.

Miss Philippines Earth 2013 continues with the tradition started last year where a long string of medal-winning pre-pageant activities allows most everyone to take a thin slice out of the big prize pie. Although as learned from Miss Earth 2012, harvesting a lot of (Gold) medals is no guarantee of comfortably slipping into the semifinals, just shiny consolations if you will.
