They’re not your cookie-cutter type of beauty queens because – after all – these nine (9) are some of the popular and stardom-bound actresses in Philippine showbiz these days. Check them out in the June 2018 issue of Mega Magazine with the following pitch:
Call us extremely ambitious or just plain crazy, but we do like shooting for the stars—literally and figuratively.
This month, as pride soars high through the tangible waving flag, it also streams in torrents within our blood, a true indicative of our deep-seated nationalism. As with tradition, we build this issue around Pinoy Pride, unabashed, unequivocal and unapologetic. Serving as sturdy pillars to this homage to the country, we present our annual #TheNewPH awards featuring a diverse mix of individuals who not only decorate the nation with milestones, but those that inspire a wave of change as well.
Of course, the piece-de-resistance is a coming together unlike any other. In an age where contemporaries are pitted against each other, we enact a joining of forces unseen in the much talked about #MakingMEGAreunion. Featuring the stars of the #MakingMEGA series, Erich Gonzalez, Julia Barretto, Maja Salvador, Elisse Joson, Gabbi Garcia, Janella Salvador, Kisses Delavin, Maymay Entrata and Nadine Lustre star in this glittering constellation all swathed in the ethereal and fantasy-worthy looks of the icon and genius himself, Furne One, who himself is celebrating a milestone in the land he calls home.
Pride is whatever you choose to define it as, but at its core, and as we deem it to be, it is a steadfast persistence at what drives you on the daily, making it worthwhile for yourself and the rest of this great nation we stand on and (still) believe in.

In the recently-concluded 37th Metro Manila Film Festival, five indie films were accommodated to take part in the New Wave section and screened in some theaters during the entirety of the same. During the awards night, trophies were separately handed out to the best of the five in different categories and this is where “Pintakasi” (Cockfight) emerged victorious. It was declared Best Picture/New Wave Student Film, aside from winning Best Actor/New Wave Student Film for JM de Guzman and Best Music & Animation.
According to the movie’s official website, “Pintakasi is about a boy on the verge of adulthood who has a passion for painting, comes to an island made from garbage. From the province, he uses the island and its people as his canvas, and fights to protect the island from the internal and external forces that threaten to destroy it.”
Check out the trailer above and I’m sure you will want to watch the full-length feature. It deserves longer exhibition before going full blast with the participation in film festivals abroad. It looks visually appealing, quick-paced, with clean cinematography and nice animations at that.
“Pintakasi” is directed by Lee Meily and stars John Wayne Sace, JM de Guzman & Erich Gonzales. It is presented by Creative Media and Film Society of the Philippines headed by Gov. Imee Marcos.
Catch the movie if it gets another round of screening at Robinson’s. 🙂
If you have been living under the rock for the past week, you wouldn’t know that Thai superstar Mario Maurer is in the country right now for his formal launch as Brand Ambassador of Penshoppe during the Philippine Fashion Week. His turn on the ramp will happen tonight at 7:30PM (Hall 2, SMX Convention Center). Unfortunately, the show is strictly by invitation. And no more invites are available. 😦
There is also confirmed news that Mario signed a one-picture contract with ABS Star Cinema where he will be paired with ‘Maria La Del Barrio’ Erich Gonzales for a romantic-comedy movie that will be shot mostly in Thailand. With the working title of “Suddenly It’s Magic”, the project should be very, very interesting. I was hoping that Kim Chiu would be his partner (a friend in Bangkok told me that chinitas are his weakness), but it turns out that Erich landed the enviable spot!
In the meantime, let’s enjoy his presence! If you’re crazy head-over-heels over him and would like to take a chance at seeing him tonight at SMX, give it a try. Who knows, he may openly mingle with all the guests after the show, lose the security cordon surrounding him and you just might end up getting a photo op with him.
Below, watch one of Mario’s TVCs released earlier this year.

Mario Maurer is adorably gorgeous!
If and when cute Mario – who is of Thai/German lineage – decides to carry some semblance of a showbiz career here in the Philippines, I’m certain that he will become more popular. He doesn’t need to reside in Manila for long periods, but just shuttle back and forth from Bangkok where he is permanently based. 😉

Ok, imagine this…Gossip Girl-meets-Project Runway-meets-The Devil Wears Prada and what do you get? ABS-CBN’s newest teleserye titled “Magkaribal” (Rivals) which is being tagged as the fashion-serye to watch out for!
I expect this soap to be glossy – extravagant even – not only because it revolves around the world of fashion, but because the lead star, Gretchen Barretto is going all out in flashing her expensive wardrobe, designer shoes, and all sorts of bling-bling. And as an added bonus, Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2009 Bianca Manalo will be joining the cast in her first-ever primetime project for ABS-CBN. Others in the cast are Bea Alonzo, Derek Ramsey, Erich Gonzales, Enchong Dee and Angel Aquino.
“Magkaribal” will start airing this month over ABS-CBN’s primetime block.
Today (and not May 26 as the poster above states), an indie movie with a respectable cast of Film and TV performers will open on limited run in Metro Manila theatres.
Noy, the Movie – directed by Dondon S. Santos from the screenplay of Shugo Praico – stars one of the Philippines’ current showbiz heartthrobs Coco Martin together with Cherry Pie Picache, Joem Bascon, Erich Gonzales, Baron Geisler and Vice Ganda. It tells the story of a family breadwinner who posed as a journalist tasked to cover the campaign trail of his namesake – Senator Noynoy Aquino – in the 2010 Philippine Presidential Elections. It contains actual documentary footages combined with a family drama that revolves around poverty, survival and hope for the Filipino family.
Here is the movie’s official trailer:
