Century Tuna Superbods Nat10n Finalist Ali Khatibi is super in many ways

 
You don’t get to meet a guy like Ali Khatibi everyday. He is this extremely active and sports-disciplined individual who has maintained a lot of interests, excelled in each one of them, and still continues to be the best in every new endeavor that he gets himself involved in.

At 30, he is proud to be an accomplished martial artist-cum-mixed martial artist. He practices and teaches jiu-jitsu, while sparing enough time to climb the octagon during URCC matches. He is also a Motocross racer who can do a string of breathtaking stunts in mid-air while navigating a variety of obstacle courses along the dirt-road path. If that’s not enough, he is also an earnest businessman who is equally devoted to his Faith during Fellowship Services.

And just to add a little more dash to his self-actualized daily existence, Ali is a loving husband to actress Cristine Reyes and a doting father to beautiful daughter Amarah.

With all the positive reinforcements surrounding Ali, you would think that he is likely to stop moving forward and achieving more goals. He won’t. At least not after he was named Finalist in the male division of Century Tuna Superbods Nat10n 2016. He wants to prove that a healthy and clean lifestyle is the way to go. And proof is in his lean and mean physique (no dadbod here) that shows off the right distribution of abs, muscles and definitions that the organizers are ideally looking for.

Annebisyosa ‘No Other Concert’ – Truly Ambitious!

As my first blog feature for the month of February, I had to give some space for my favorite Anne Curtis who – as a non-singer – was able to hold a very successful concert last Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Titled “Annebisyosa – No Other Concert”, the big dome was literally filled to the rafters with the presence of thousands of fans, supporters, and celebrity friends.

Mounting a concert this big was such a huge task, let alone the fact that the star of the whole thing is a lady who is more known for her acting chops than a creditable singing ability. In fact, Anne’s only official claim to singing was a bestselling music cd released last year. But trust the personality-driven Pinoys to give their all-out adulation. Never mind the intermittent slip-ups with the choreography or the lyrics, everybody stayed through the 3-hour concert to have fun and some good laughs.

You could say that Anne deserves an ‘A’ for effort. But it doesn’t stop there. She religiously attended all the rehearsals with the band and the dancers, while heavily promoting the concert on Twitter, Facebook and TV. And boy, did she wow everyone that night. She may not have the voice of guest Sarah Geronimo, but she squeezed everything that she could to come up with numbers that dazzled and inspired the audience.

Her spots with little sister Jasmine, comedians Vice Ganda and Vhong Navarro, host/actor Luis Manzano, rock musicians Rico Blanco & Ira Cruz, “No Other Woman” co-stars Cristine Reyes & Derek Ramsay and ex-boyfriend Sam Milby were all well-applauded. But nothing beats her number on top of a slowly-descending bed from mid-air while singing the difficult and demanding “Alone”.

Anne clearly emphasized that this will be her “first and last” major concert. But looking at how tremendously successful (and profitable) the whole thing was, I doubt it if a repeat (or a fresh new concept) will be ignored by her management team (Viva). Give them ten months or one year at most and I’m sure a part two will follow. A duplicate might even be staged for the Pinoys in the US as well.

I’m not too keen about Anne shifting from acting to singing, but if she can provide solid entertainment in whatever shape, form or trick, then a follow-up production for 2013 is very very possible. After all, why tag her “concert sweetheart” when the girl is clearly not even categorized as a one-hit wonder? 😉

Movie ‘must’ watch: “No Other Woman”

You have got to watch the movie this weekend. You will like everything about it. Promise.

And if it helps in your decision, “No Other Woman” has been rated A by the Cinema Evaluation Board.

It doesn’t take a genius to guess that infidelity is the film’s main subject matter. But go beyond jaded notions about spending two hours on something that has been told so many times before. Director Ruel Bayani masterfully directed all his performers as the trio of Anne Curtis, Derek Ramsay and Cristine Reyes came up with splendid performances worthy of an applause. Add to that the attention-grabbing turns of supporting players Carmi Martin and Tirso Cruz III plus a screenplay that is both fluid and engaging, and you’ve got both a critical and box-office hit.

“No Other Woman” is a co-production of Star Cinema and Viva Films.

Must-look-forward-to-movie-remake: Working Girls (2010)

1984 was the year that the original “Working Girls” movie was released. It became a box-office hit back then as well as an iconic piece of work from the late great Director Ishmael Bernal. The seven ladies who played the title roles were Hilda Koronel, Rio Locsin, Chanda Romero, Gina Pareno, Carmi Martin, Maria Isabel Lopez and Baby Delgado. I remember watching the movie twice in the cinema and enjoying it over and over again on TV. It was a fun chick flick that spawned a sequel that unfortunately flopped.

This year, exactly 26 years after, a remake of “Working Girls” is set for release this coming April 21. And boy, am I hyped for it. Director Jose Javier Reyes wants to pay homage to Ishmael Bernal via this movie and I really hope he lives up to expectations. Viva Films – which produced the original – is also behind the same together with GMA Films and Unitel Productions. The seven ladies in the cast are Ruffa Gutierrez, Eugene Domingo, Iza Calzado, Cristine Reyes, Jennylyn Mercado, Bianca King and Eula Valdez who take on new roles quite different from their predecessors in order to keep up with the times. I must admit, though, that some of them are likely patterned after the first. Take for example Eugene Domingo. She is obviously filling in the comedic part of Gina Pareno (who played an alajera and is now featured in the remake with her) but this time, the former is a seller of fake handbags. On the other hand, Jennylyn Mercado’s character reminds me of Rio Locsin’s role and surprise, they play mother-and-daughter in the movie. Anyways, two other original cast members are part of the new ensemble. Carmi Martin (who popularized the line “Sabel, this must be love!”) is back as a patient of Eula Valdes’ Vicki Belo-reminiscent part, while Maria Isabel Lopez is returning as an activist type who fights against malpractices in cosmetic surgery.

The Metro Manila Film Festival 2009 Part 2

Here are the remaining Filipino movies participating in the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) which runs from December 25, 2009 to January 7, 2010 – comparatively longer than previous years’ editions.

I always have to keep in mind that the MMFF is more focused on generating success at the box-office than short-listing movies for competition in filmfests abroad. Hence, I don’t expect the highest of praises from critics. Nonetheless, entertainment is the key word. So I want movies that truly entertain, even if for only 2 hours.

5. ANG DARLING KONG ASWANG

SYNOPSIS. There are two kinds of aswangs: the white and black aswangs. The white ones are merely mischievous while their black counterparts eat human flesh.

The black aswangs in Isla Negra are led by the wicked Barang (Jean Garcia) and in her group are nieces Alfa (Jackie Rice), Beta (Denise Laurel) and Keka (Empress Schuck), nephew Joaquin (Rafael Rosell) and the cruel warlock Gino (Gian Sotto). Ida (Agot Isidro) and her lovely daughter Eliza (Cristine Reyes) are part of them too but they are reluctant to eat human flesh and without Barang’s knowledge, they feed upon animals.

When Joaquin pressures Eliza to marry him, Ida decides to escape and goes to the city. They sought shelter and protection in Ida’s cousin Banong. It is in Banong’s community where Eliza meets Victor (Vic Sotto) and there was instant attraction between the two of them.

Victor is a call center manager who is already a widower. He has two adorable daughters, Darlene (Barbie Forteza) and Angel (Mika dela Cruz). They live with Victor’s father Tata Do (Dante Rivero) who is the barangay captain of the place, Nana Simang (Luz Fernandez), the housekeeper and Tom (Richie D’ Horsie), Victor’s cousin who also works in the call center as a janitor. Gerry (Wally Bayola), the barangay aide is a fixture in the house as well.

Many girls in the workplace are attracted to Victor but he keeps distance from them. He says his loves are his two daughters. But when he accidentally met Eliza, things are bound to change.

Though they belong to different “races,” Ida tells Eliza that it’s not bad to fall in love with Victor for it might free her from the curse of being an aswang because there’s a legend that only the purest of love can turn a “creature of the night” into a normal human being.

Through the prodding of Tom and Gerry, Victor eventually courts Eliza and they became sweethearts. His daughters also came to like her in the long run. But at one point, Eliza reveals to Victor her true identity: that she’s an aswang. She asks him if he will still love her despite her dark secret.

Will Victor accept Eliza and her true nature? What will happen when Barang forces Eliza and Ida to return to their coven? Will Victor fight against the black aswangs or will he turn his back on his darling aswang?

6. SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLL XI

Every year, Regal Films has made it a tradition to scare families with their horror franchise Shake, Rattle and Roll. This 2009, moviegoers will be able to watch the 11th installment of SRR for the annual Metro Manila Film Festival.

Also known by its initials SRR, this three-part movie takes inspiration from Filipino mythology to shock and entertain viewers at the same time.

The episode “Lamang Lupa” features young stars Jennica Garcia, Rayver Cruz, Iya Villania, Mart Escudero, Bangs Garcia and twin brothers Dominic and Felix Roco.

The story focuses on the lamang lupa of Philippine mythology. A group of friends go camping only to find themselves relentlessly pursued by ferocious creatures who are not dwarves but lamang lupa. Unknown to the barkada, they “disturbed” the creatures’ sacred area and they will pay the price for their mistake. The director for this episode is Jessel Monteverde.

“Diablo” stars Maja Salvador and Mark Anthony Fernandez, two of the finest performers of their generation. Directed by Rico Gutierrez, the episode revolves around Claire, a young doctor-intern at a provincial hospital who is haunted by demonic visions after she encounters a female patient suspected of carrying a deadly flu virus. Claire’s aunt brings her to Fr. Ronnie who turns out be Claire’s ex-boyfriend. Old flames are rekindled as Fr. Ronnie and Claire battle the demons.

Completing this “horror-fest” is the “Ukay-Ukay” story with Ruffa Gutierrez and Zoren Legaspi as a would-be couple Kayla and Harold whose wedding plans are deterred by a possessed vintage gown. When it falls into their hands, heavy breathing, nightmares, dragging footsteps and an apparition of a headless bride start happening. Instead of planning a wedding, Kayla must now fight against the evil spirits. Megan Young is also cast in this episode. Writer-turned-director Don Michael Perez is at the helm.

“SRR 11 is still the same scare and excitement that people have grown to love all these years, even more,” says producer Roselle Monteverde-Teo. “This year, we’re tackling horror concepts that are very unique to our culture in more thought-provoking and exciting ways.”

The haunting happens again when Shake, Rattle and Roll 11 opens in theaters nationwide starting December 25, 2009

7. NOBODY, NOBODY…BUT JUAN

SYNOPSIS. Juan (played by Dolphy) is a senior citizen who lives in a nursing home in the United States. In his younger days, he was a vaudeville performer who was part of a comedy duo called Wan and Tu. The younger version of Wan (Dolphy) is portrayed by his son Epy Quizon while Tu is portrayed by his other son, Vandolph.

To entertain himself and ease the loneliness, Juan watches Wowowee on The Filipino Channel (TFC). His enthusiasm for the show rubs on his friends in the nursing home, and they too, turn into “Wowowee” converts – much to the chargin of the strict son of Juan who runs the nursing home.

The elderly Juan misses the Philippines, especially his first love Aida whom he lost touch with during the Japanese occupation of Manila. He finds a way to come back to the Philippines and along the way, he is reunited with his good friend Tu (portrayed by Eddie Garcia). He also finds out the whereabouts of his lady love Aida (portrayed by Gloria Romero).

G Toengi is cast as the wife of Eric Quizon, who is also cast as a son of Juan in the movie.

The screenplay of Nobody, Nobody but… Juan is written by Bibeth Orteza and directed by Eric Quizon.

Typhoon Ondoy’s fury

The Philippines is one of the few countries I know that can take on a succession of storms and typhoons with nerves of steel and an unusual degree of calmness. But when the latest typhoon named “Ondoy” hammered its fury full force last Saturday, the results were damaging at the very least. Weather bureaus have stated that the amount of rain for the whole of September 26 equalled one month’s output. Hardest hit were Marikina City, Quezon City, Manila, Pasig, Malabon plus the whole province of Rizal and parts of Bulacan topping the list of calamity-stricken areas. On top of the countless properties washed away by the rampaging flood waters, lives were also taken (more than a hundred as of the last update) and hundreds upon thousands left homeless – rich and poor.

Even celebrities were not spared. Actress Cristine Reyes and her household members had to troop to the roof of their 2-storey house in Marikina’s Provident Village as water was uncontrollably rising. They stayed there wet and horrified from 1pm till close to midnight when they were rescued by Actor Richard Gutierrez (in a speedboat) and the actress’ brother in jetski. The same thing happened to mother-and-daughter celebrities Jean and Jennica Garcia whose house in Quezon City got flooded and had to seek temporary shelter in the house of co-actress Jennylyn Mercado. Everything was just so devastating.
