The two most important individual’s in the life of Miss Philippines Mariel de Leon are already in Tokyo, Japan to give their all-out support in her bid for the Miss International 2017 crown. Celebrity parents Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong were tightly hugged by their daughter upon seeing each other at Tokyo Dome Hotel. And the scene was captured in photos by my friend Voltaire Tayag.
Also in Tokyo are Aces & Queens mentors Jonas Gaffud and Nad Bronce who are so happy to see their “anak” in high spirits.
Mariel is in a very happy place right now, most especially that she was able to display her Talent in Classical Singing during the formal dinner with some VIP guests and MI organizers in attendance.
And Bb. Pilipinas International 2017 Mariel de Leon is off to Tokyo, Japan to represent the country in Miss International 2017. She was seem at the airport by mentor Jonas Gaffud, father Christopher de Leon, brother Gab and selected members of the media. She will aim for a back-to-back but is not totally pressured by the prospect and wants to enjoy the entire journey – this being her first trip to the Land of the Rising Sun.
Let us give our support to Mariel in her mission for the country.
Bb. Pilipinas International 2017 Mariel de Leon
The first thing I told Bb. Pilipinas International 2017 Mariel de Leon when I joined her table during yesterday’s lunch event at Union Jack Tavern was “do you know long and winding the discussions went when I blogged about you and that Mocha Uson incident?
” And she was like the least bit surprised. She wanted to read the entire transcript, but I cautioned her not to but do at your own risk if you will.
Mariel has her own true identity, and it is one that might have spawned from a combination of the relatively contrasting personalities of her celebrity parents. She can be very vocal, but she will never continuously offend like a raging bull. She knows her parameters clearly well, although there will always be some scattered and unguarded moments when she would express her mind like a free spirit. That is how I read this oft-bashed beauty. There is a certain method to understanding her ways (something she might have acquired from her popular fathet) but it is far from plain acting or internalizing a role. The quiescent quality could have been a trait straight out of her (still known and active in TV as a character actress) mother’s public and private persona. So what you really get is a tempered quality of being forthright.
Mariel just wants to let everything flow and not be affected by criticisms being thrown at her
I am loving it that whenever I see Mariel and Rachel (Peters
) together, there is a developing sisterly bond that makes them somewhat source their strengths from each other.
You either just like Mariel or love her. I bet that you will never dislike or hate her to the max because the minute you get to sit down with her and talk, the impression will be far from what you may have created in your mind based on what the news or social media has created for purposes of public perception. 🙂

Celebrity couple Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong are mighty proud of their daughter Mariel who has now become the first beauty queen in the family after getting the title of Bb. Pilipinas International 2017 last Sunday night. And the 23 year-old is excited as she enters a world where she can build her full identity in.
Below are excerpts from her message of thanks on IG:
“This is the night that changed my life. The night the lion came out! It made it even more memorable because I was crowned by Kylie Versoza! Miss International was always the crown I was dreaming of because they represent ethereal beauties who are strong but gentle, compassionate, intelligent, kind, and are willing to take action to change the world. God has answered my prayers. His love is amazing! Thank you, Father!
Thank you Nanay, Tatay, and my siblings for supporting me since day 1. Without you guys, I am nothing and I wouldn’t be the woman I am today. We have all always shared so much love with each other and I am so grateful for all of you. God has blessed me with the best parents and siblings ever! I love you all…
…To my Aces & Queens family. I am so grateful and over the moon to be part of your family since 2013. You helped mold me from a girl to a woman… A princess to a QUEEN. The Aces & Queens are the best beauty queen makers in the whole world but the real queens are all you mamas and papas! You sacrifice everything in your part yet never ask for money, or anything for that matter, in return for all those training sessions. You just ask us to do our best, not for you, but for ourselves and our dreams. I am so blessed to be in such a generous and loving group. You do this out of your love and passion for beauty pageants and for us, your anaks. Without Aces & Queens, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be a beauty queen.

Best of luck in your new life as Bb. Pilipinas International, Mariel! Never be daunted by the objective of a first-ever back-to-back historic win in Miss International 2017 because you will train harder and stay focused on being the next recipient of the crown on the head of Kylie Verzosa.

Back in 2013, Maria Angelica ‘Mariel’ de Leon was tipped to be one of the Bb. Pilipinas Gold titles, not only because of her celebrity pedigree, but because she was definitely one of the more stellar standouts among the fifty (50) Official Candidates. She performed well up to the Q&A that people inside the Araneta Coliseum were expecting her name to be announced as one of the five (5) winners in the magic circle. But sadly, it wasn’t meant to happen at the time.
Her trainers at Aces & Queens thought that she would need at least two more years before going for a second try in the nationals. That was 2013. It is now mid-2015. And Bb. Pilipinas 2016 will start sending message alerts by the 4th Quarter. Will she be 100% ready by then? The photos in this feature were taken by my photographer-friend Jay Buen last December, 2014, so Mariel should have a relatively different aura now.
Let’s see if Aces will see her fit to trek the pageant trail once again. 😉

If you look at the side-by-side photos of Bb. Pilipinas 2013 aspirants Ria Rabajante and Mariel de Leon Above, you’d be inclined to think that they were styled by one and the same person. But no. Ria is an indie, while Mariel comes from Aces & Queens. There is a somewhat similar peg with their looks such that even their respective smiles appear to be almost a match.
Anyways, how do I size up these two lovelies?
Ria arrived for the Bb. Pilipinas screenings and created a stir with her arresting facial features and vavavoom body. Ooh, and her eyes definitely have that ferocious stare She was an instant hit and continues to climb the popularity ranks as a major spoiler for the entries of the three main beauty camps. While she may be only fiddling along the 5’7″ height, the stark reality is that she has the killer stance that can make onlookers drop down on their knees and shout joyous hallelujahs. Right now, she seems like a good fit for any of the crowns at stake. And that is because her looks can easily stand out in a long lineup of international delegates. But do I see her leapfrogging to the top of the heap come finals in April? Right now, not yet. She could be going the route akin to Michelle Arcangel, the BBP1999 1st Runner-Up who wowed everyone with her exotic looks and sexy body. But that’s just me.

And Mariel? Her pedigree cannot be ignored. The daughter of celebrity parents Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong, she definitely got the beauty of her mother and added a spicier twist to the same. At first, nobody gave this 5’8″ enlister a second look when she submitted her application late last month. When she made her second appearance during the screenings, however, not a few nodded their heads in approval. And why not? She turned into a strong contender right then and there. Her angular face, made more prominent by a strong jawline, is something that not very many girls can carry with such ease and pride. And it’s exactly the feature that sets her apart from the rest. Will she get a crown in her first attempt? Possibly, but not strongly so just yet. Let’s see what aces she still has up her sleeve. If I get to like what I see and hear, then maybe – just maybe – I may elevate her ranking on my list. And mind you, I am not even factoring in the clout (if it indeed exists) of her folks.
Anything to add, dispute or correct, dear readers? 😉
Being the daughter of celebrity couple Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong has its perks. Will joining BBP2013 give her a clear edge?
Being the daughter of topnotch TV/Film actor Christopher de Leon and equally respected performer Sandy Andolong should be reason enough for Maria Angelica “Mariel” de Leon to follow in their footsteps and enter the world of showbusiness. But not for this 5’8″ square-jawed beauty. Instead of taking advantage of the express pass to film and television, she is hoping to carve a name all her own in the world of beauty pageants.
Honestly, this girl has strong potentials. And with the right training, she could reap her own set of rewards in an industry different – but not completely alien – from where her parents excelled in. 😉
From the time it premiered on GMA-7 last December 7, I gradually got hooked to the first-ever Christmaserye which takes its title from the popular Ariel Rivera Christmas ditty “Sana Ngayong Pasko” or roughly translated to English as “Hopefully, this Christmas.”
I don’t normally get enticed by mushy teledramas, but this one has got the right blend of drama and humor all rolled up to capture the holiday spirit while emphasizing on love, forgiveness and strong family values.
Yes, Susan Roces has already aged a lot and it shows. This is the main reason why she fits the role of Remedios to a T. She plays a married woman who abandoned her husband and children to be with the real love of her life. Decades later, she returns to the same home to re-connect and make amends with her children (and grandchildren) who either welcomed or abhored her re-appearance. The twist in the Christmaserye is that Remedios is afflicted with a disease that slowly erases her memory. She wants to gain the forgiveness of her family and spend whatever is left of her life in their company or at least before her memory of them is completely gone.
Try catching “Sana Ngayong Pasko” on GMA-7 from Mondays-to-Fridays after Full House. This is just a short series that will last till the first week of January 2010.
Below is part of the first episode aired last December 7.
