There’s nothing new anymore about established beauty queens crossing over to other national beauty pageants and winning a second title to their names. The likes of Catriona Gray, Carlene Aguilar, Katarina Rodriguez, Kirby Ann Basken (from Mutya ng Pilipinas Asia Pacific 2006 to Miss Universe Norway 2007) and Leren Mae Bautista fall under that category – even the subject of our blog entry for today.

But what really makes Christi Lynn McGarry more unique compared to the rest? I can name two (2):

Christi McGarry during the first time she represented the Philippines in Miss Intercontinental back in 2010.

1) She was crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas Asia Pacific 2010 but was sent instead to Miss Intercontinental 2010 in the Dominican Republic after the original Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2010 Carla Lizardo could not fulfill the overseas mission. She placed in the Top 15 and was named Continental Queen of Asia Oceania. In the same year, she was appointed to represent the Philippines in Top Model of the World where she also finished in the Top 15.

2) When Christi suited up for Bb. Pilipinas 2015, she wanted so much to win any of the titles at stake except for Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental for obvious reasons. But as fate would have it, she earned the right to represent us in Miss Intercontinental for a second time. The only difference is that she performed better by grabbing 1st Runner-Up honors to Valentina Rasulova of Russia and claiming the Continental Queen of Asia Oceania sash once more.

Christi’s pageant career is colorful to say the least. Maybe the hues are not as bright as, say competing in either Miss Universe or Miss International. But all things being equal, her share of achievements cannot be sneered upon. Here is someone who vied twice for the same international pageant crown, made a creditable mark at first and returned as a more polished and prepared fighter five years later. The hosting of the 47th Miss Intercontinental in the Philippines from January 9-26, 2019 is already a sealed deal with the finals scheduled to take place at the Mall of Asia Arena. And as Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental 2018, Karen Gallman has the double assignment of being a most gracious and hospitable host delegate as well as winning the country’s first-ever crown in the said competition. It is not an easy task honestly, but neither is it a tall order the way I see it.

A hometown decision is always met with resistance by all other participating countries. But our representative is dead serious in claiming the victory that has been “robbed” from us at least twice. The 2nd Runner-Up finish of Kris Tiffany Janson last 2015 was a close call and we know the controversy surrounding the results at the time. The 1st Runner-Up placement of Christi McGarry last 2016 should have already earned for us the much-awaited win. And the identical rank of Katarina Rodriguez last January in Egypt was such a major source of complaint from Filipino pageant fans who could not accept the decision. That was supposed to be our big moment finally.

So here comes the Philippines hosting Miss Intercontinental for the first time. Will we finally get the well-deserved #1 position?

Photo-Blog: A 2nd (and more Queen-studded) Book Launch for “The Crown”

It was a more glittery 2nd book launch for “The Crown” by Jonas Gaffud at the Hello Kitty Cafe in Uptown Mall BGC with the presence of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa along with Shamcey Supsup-Lee, Mariel de Leon, Chanel Olive Thomas, Maxine Medina, Christi McGarry, Katarina Rodriguez, Valerie Weigmann, Marie-Ann Umali and Angelica Alita. Mercator talents and managers also showed up plus Queen P’s special someone Marlon Stockinger.

And it was a more casual and fun event altogether as everyone participated in the pageant trivia contest where delightful Hello Kitty (Sanrio) items were given away.

Before anything else, let me congratulate my favorite shoemaker and “anak” Jojo Bragais for the formal reveal of his Bragais Brides Collection which comes at just the right time of the year.

What is a little more interesting is the set of models he got for the promotional shoot of the same. There is Miss World Philippines 2015 Hillarie Parungao. And then there is Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental 2015 Christi Lynn McGarry. And finally, there is the sparkling Charmaine Elima.

What could this endorsement be saying to local pageant fans? Will she hang up the Cabin Crew uniform within the year to start training for her anticipated comeback in the nationals? Is this a hint of her appearance in Bb. Pilipinas 2017?

Pilipinas 2015 winners, allow me to pay a brief homage to the most successful batch of titleholders in the modern history of the country’s premiere beauty pageant. This is the quintet which represented us overseas and came home either as the victors or in respectable overall placements.

During last night’s Cream Silk Transformations event launch, the winners of Bb. Pilipinas 2015 had a special reunion where Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach grouped herself once more with Bb. Pilipinas International Janicel Lubina, Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental Christi Lynn McGarry, Bb. Pilipinas Supranational Rogelie Catacutan, Miss Globe 2015 Ann Lorraine Colis and 1st Runner-Up Hannah Ruth Sison. Only 2nd Runner-Up Kimverlyn Suiza was missing.

It was such a special moment for all reigning titleholders as the last time they were together, Pia was still Miss Universe Philippines 2015 and looking at clinching the DIC crown in Las Vegas. This time around, the group feels a lot more emotional especially that one of them actually successfully achieved the most difficult mission of all. And this batch of winners will long be remembered as the one that actually produced the 3rd Miss Universe victory for the Philippines.

Last Monday, January 11, Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental 2015 and Miss Intercontinental 2015 1st Runner-Up Christi Lynn McGarry was feted by BPCI in a Homecoming Press Conference held at the Novotel Manila Araneta Center with some members of the media present to warmly welcome her back. Proudly displaying the crystal trophy she won from the competition in Magdeburg, Germany, she also wore the sash as Miss Intercontinental Asia-Oceania after she topped all the candidates from the region.

The 2016 search is so on!

 
I know the question/s nagging you right now. Why are there only five (5) titles at stake and not six (6)? Whatever happened to Miss Globe Philippines and Miss Grand Philippines? Why is Bb. Pilipinas Tourism still up there when it was already excluded when the new website was launched last year?

I tried to contact BPCI regarding the above queries, but have not received any replies or clarifications so far. So what’s my take?

My Speculations:
1) The franchises for Miss Globe and Miss Grand International could initially be just one-year trial collaborations and their renewals are still under negotiations subject for mutual agreement. It is possible for these titles to be reinstated soon. Or not.
2) Bb. Pilipinas Tourism could be there because the organizers of Miss Tourism Queen International (which pushed through with its 2015 finals) might have made amends with BPCI in order to resume the sending of a 2016 representative.

So with that, let me share with you the important things to bring and remember before filing the application:

When is application period?
BPCI will start accepting applications on Dec. 16, 2015, from 10am-5pm. BPCI Office is located at Uniprom Inc., near Red Gate of Smart Araneta Coliseum. We will accept applications from Monday – Friday. Deadline for submission is on January 15, 2016.

Where do we get the application form?

You can download the form here or personally go to BPCI Office upon application. Applicants will have to fill up the form at the BPCI office.

What should you bring?
Please provide original copies + one photocopy

Proof of citizenship
For natural-born citizen, Born in the Philippines – birth certificate and Philippine passport, if applicable.

Balikbayan Who Re-Acquired Philippine Citizenship Under R.A. 9225 – Birth Certificate or Report of Birth; and Identification certificate issued by the Bureau of Immigration.

Natural-Born Citizen Born Outside the Philippines – Report of Birth issued by the Philippine Consulate in the country of Birth; or NSO certificate stating that birth was reported by the Philippine consulate and recorded in the Philippines.

Proof of Residency
Valid ID showing residency in the Philippines for those who have not resided outside the country.

For those who have resided outside the Philippines, valid ID showing Philippine address plus any of the following : Philippine Passport, Foreign Passport; or Certificate from Bureau of Immigration stating date of entry into the Philippines.

College or High School Diploma.

Medical Certificate for both physical and Mental health and well-being.

Certificate of Good Moral Character given by your School, Church or Professional Organization.

Two (2) photographs – One close up and one full body shot.

Parent’s consent if below 18 years old.

What is the age requirement to qualify for the pageant?
Applicant should be from 17 to 26 years of age at the time of the pageant.

This is the time when young girls will be separated from strong women. This is where the bravest of beautiful souls and faces will come forward to take up the challenge of meeting their pageant destinies #ForThePhilippines. This is when the toughest year of all anticipated missions will take place.

Six (6) titles will be at stake for Bb. Pilipinas 2016!

 
The eventual winners will have the distinct challenges of going for back-to-back victories in both Miss Universe and Miss Globe, while surpassing the runner-up placements in Miss Intercontinental and Miss Grand International or better yet, nailing our first wins in both. Not to be put aside, the remaining two will have to aim for the country’s 6th Miss International and 2nd Miss Supranational #1 finishes.

This won’t be easy. The Philippines is now a certified global pageant powerhouse nation. Targets will be marked on your backs. And there will be no room for the weak-willed, however gorgeous you look on the outside.
