This is the Bb. Pilipinas edition which served as some sort of prelude to the 1994 Miss Universe which the Philippines was hosting in Manila. It was a national finals which saw the Bb. Pilipinas Universe title going to almost everyone’s choice – Charlene Bonnin Gonzalez – who was just the most beautiful among all the candidates in that batch. She went on to finish Top 6 in the bigger pageant where India won its first via Sushmita Sen. The Bb. Pilipinas World winner was uber tall Caroline Subijano who competed in Miss World 1994 and finished in the Top 10 of a strong group that had Aishwarya Rai as winner. And of course, former actress Alma Concepcion was the Bb. Pilipinas International winner. Interestingly, Abbygale Arenas finished 1st Runner-Up here. She returned more triumphantly three years later when she was finally crowned Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1997.
For today’s Throwback Thursday post, let us give the space to Miss Universe Philippines 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach who has her own throwback more than two years ago when she was still Bb. Pilipinas 2013 1st Runner-Up and guested on ABS-CBN’s “The Buzz” with the other winners. The interviewer was Bb. Pilipinas 1994 Charlene Gonzalez-Muhlach, a personal idol.
What the heck, I want Pia to tell about it in her own words.
Hi Ms Charlene! I’m not sure if you remember me but in 2013 we, the Bb Pilipinas winners of that year, had an interview with you in The Buzz. I remember you spoke to me backstage after & said that I should try again because the 1st runner up of your year also joined again & eventually got the Bb Pilipinas Universe title. I followed your advice & joined last year. Unfortunately did not make it to top 7 but then I tried again for the 3rd time this year & I finally won! 😀 I’d just like to say a big thank you for inspiring me to join again. You were the 1st Bb Pilipinas that I saw on TV as a kid. I remember it so vividly, after you won I tried to walk around the living room & tried to answer Q&A questions thrown by my mom. Anyway thank you so much. You’re my first beauty queen idol & you’re still one of my favorites! After the interview I saw your photo on the halls of ABSCBN, just outside our dressing room. I tried to take a photo of it when one of the staff members of The Buzz said “Bakit yan ang pinipicturan mo? Magpapicture ka nalang sa kanya. Halika sasamahan kita” and I said “OMG pwede ba? Sige po!” After we took this photo I went back to the dressing room and I was tearing up. Ara even saw it 😂 Yun lang po, I’m really a fan. @itsmecharleneg 😄 You are my #SuperPinoy Thank you!! #JRSuperPinoy
Fate really has a way of making dreams come true. Maybe not for all. But it did for Pia. 😉
It doesn’t take a lot to know why Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1994 Charlene Mae Bonnin Gonzalez remains as one of the top favorites among Filipina placers in Miss Universe. She is beautiful, and remains ravishing up to now. On top of that, she remained active in showbusiness for quite some time up until last year when she bowed out of ABS-CBN’s “The Buzz”. What’s more, it’s always a joy to watch her performance during Miss Universe 1994 when she made it all the way to Top 6.
I know that so many throwback posts and articles have already been made about her. But let’s do it one more time for Charlene. After all, she was Miss Philippines during the very first Miss Universe I covered for personal enjoyment (aside from being able to pull some strings at the Manila Hotel where they were billeted at the time). 😉

I’m talking about the Miss Universe Little Sisters who – while lip-synching the song “You Are My Star” – added just the right amount of cuteness to the Long Gown Competition of thirteen (13) editions from 1983 to 1995. All of the Miss Universe delegates during this period experienced having a little sister during the finals, but only the ladies who made it to the semifinals were actually able to walk down the stage hand-in-hand with the cuties. And for the record, only three (3) Filipinas were able to do so – Desiree Verdadero from 1984, Geraldine Edith Asis from 1987 (see photo on the left) and Charlene Gonzalez from 1994.
Don’t you wish these little girls would make an adorable comeback in Doral Miami for old times’ sake? I have a feeling Donald Trump would thumb down the idea, but I don’t see why he can’t be prevailed upon by the organization for something heartwarming. After all, he already started revamping the Miss Universe image by pushing for more charity-driven causes (like what Gabriela Isler has been up to the past full year). Why not include a touch of wholesome presence in the finals? 😀
Let’s reminisce a little more and watch a video of the Little Sisters of Manila during Miss Universe 1994.

It should be the Santacruzan to beat all Santacruzans. With all the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Queens with Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1994 Charlene Gonzalez, Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago and the Official Candidates of Bb. Pilipinas 2014, this is one beautiful procession that can make you feel proud of the gorgeous Filipinas we have in our midst.
We just do not run out of them. 😉

I am a proud Thomasian, despite having taken Masteral studies in Ateneo Graduate School of Business and regular part-time teaching work at De La Salle Univesity afterwards.
The annual search for the Thomasian Youth Amabassador and Ambassadress is an event always worth looking forward to inside the campus. This is where some of the beautiful Binibinis started their journey towards pageant success. Titleholders like Janine Tugonon, Cindy Miranda and Jhezarie Javier would normally be mentioned in the same breath. Truth be told, however, there are more winners from the institution who no longer needed to pass through such – Charlene Gonzalez, Precious Lara Quigaman and Miriam Quiambao just to name a few.
Anyways, the 2014 candidates for the campus-wide personality competition are focusing on their main advocacy of education. And so far, I can feel that the four hopefuls below will figure out well during the finals scheduled for February 13, 2014 at the UST Plaza Mayor.
I think that Angelica Duran and Tetsuya Makino are potential winners. I will post here the eventual top finishers next week. 😉
For those who missed the TV guestings of Miss World 2013 Megan Young yesterday, below are her appearances on ABS-CBN’s The Buzz and GMA-7’s Sunday All-Stars. Enjoy! 🙂

Yesterday afternoon, the eyes of pageant fans were glued to the small screen when all five Bb. Pilipinas 2013 winners made their first formal free TV interview as a group on The Buzz. Co-Host Charlene Gonzalez (a beauty queen herself) animatedly handled their segment and was able to bring out the best in our ladies.

Let’s cruise down memory lane today. The year was 1994 and it was the second time that the Philippines was awarded hosting chores for Miss Universe. There were so many beautiful candidates then. Miss USA Lu Parker was such a sweetheart, just as Silvia Lakatosova of Slovak Rep had a childlike quality hiding beneath her glam facade. Belgium’s Christelle Roelandts was the solid fave of Filipinos, while the country’s bet Charlene Gonzalez made sure that she projected a most gracious sister image to all the girls. Anyways, I pulled some strings to get a well-located room at the Manila Hotel (The Official Residence of MU1994) so that I can ‘stalk’ the ladies for three solid days that they were constantly rehearsing for finals night. I got all the photo ops I wanted, but sought one particular lady who caught my attention from the day the delegates landed on Philippine soil – Miss Colombia, Carolina Gomez Correa. This Latina was one of my top 2 favorites to win the crown (the other one being Venezuelan Goddess Minorka Mercado). And she was dead close to becoming her country’s 2nd Miss Universe when she landed 1st Runner-Up honors to eventual winner Sushmita Sen of India. Unfazed by the same, she went to become a top model and actress (she starred in a number of hit telenovelas) in Bogota. She also starred with Fil-Am actor Rob Schneider in the movie ‘The Chosen One’. As for her lovelife, she was twice married to and separated from long-time boyfriend Nicolas Hoyos to whom she bore a son named Tomas.
Below is the latest photo of Carolina Gomez with her son…
How about you, dear readers? Any stand-out memories of Miss Universe 1994? 🙂
One of the most gorgeous faces in Bb. Pilipinas 2012 belongs to Sherlyn Gonzales. It baffles me somehow why there is very little buzz about her. Could it be due to the fact that she stands only 5’5 1/2″? Or perhaps a significantly less ‘in-your-face’ presence when participating in pre-pageant activities along with the 29 other beauties? Whatever it is, I think this Ilocana deserves a spot in anyone’s semi-final shortlist at the minimum.
Who knows? She might just be blindsiding everyone by now and getting on the good side of the people behind the pageant and proving that she is a deserving winner to the ones who matter.
Who knows? Sherlyn Gonzales might do a Charlene Gonzalez. Nothing’s impossible at this point. 😉
