As if the simultaneous – albeit informal – launching of both Binibining Pilipinas 2012 and Miss World Philippines 2012 is not enough, here comes the third wheel announcing the initial stages of the search for Miss Philippines-Earth 2012. Whew! Beautiful Filipina girls must be having a field day at the moment, playing eenee-meenee-minee-mo on which pageant to join this year. Of course, there is the good and the bad to all three searches happening at almost the same time.
First, the bad. It will prevent ladies from “crossing-over” within the same year. For example, there are only three titles at stake in Binibining Pilipinas, which means that the non-placers will no longer have the chance to join Miss World-Philippines or Miss Philippines-Earth due to competition dates almost overlapping each other. And in the event that we see a bumper crop of contenders for the first, losers with bright potentials will have to wait for 2013 to enlist in another. True, time flies so fast. But we are an impatient batch of armchair judges, to say the least.
And now, the good. All three organizers will put their best foot forward to get the best-looking (and most well-prepared) candidates for their respective competitions. It’s like the network wars where Binibining Pilipinas represents ABS-CBN, Miss World Philippines for GMA-7 and Miss Philippines-Earth for ABS-CBN (or should they switch allegiance to TV5 this year?) In this scenario, Carousel Productions may find itself on the losing end because the Top 2 will get the lion’s share of topnotch wannabes, with the leftovers being shared with the other smaller contests like Mutya ng Pilipinas or Miss Bikini Philippines or Miss Resorts World Manila and the like. But hey, what’s more important is that we find the best bets for Miss Universe 2012 and Miss World 2012 where the country has a good running record to protect.
So what does this mean to all of us? An exciting plate of national finals for 2012! This blog will definitely have a heady slate in the next two months. But I don’t mind. Bring it on! 🙂
