The winning team of The Amazing Race Season 17 will be known Sunday night (Monday morning in the Philippines) and you can catch the telecast on AXN Channel tonight at 7PM.

I’m rooting for either Nat & Kat and Brook & Claire to become the first-ever all-female winners of the original. The Amazing Race Asia (TARA) has already produced one (in the 1st season yet) and it’s high time that TAR comes up with its own.

The Amazing Race is hosted by Phil Keoghan.

Update (as of 11:10am Manila time; Dec. 13): The race is already finished. And the DOCTORS won!!! I’m so happy for Nat and Kat – the first-ever all-female winners of The Amazing Race US! 😉

The Richards of the Philippines - The Amazing race Asia 4 winners

They kept it to themselves for so long. Now, they can jump for joy in front of the Filipinos and shout “We WON!”

The Richards – Herrera and Hardin – raced to the max and checked in first at the finish line (right at the Observatory Deck of Marina Bay Sands). Host Allan Wu officially announced them as the winners of The Amazing Race Asia 4 and USD100,000.00 in cash. The final leg was in Singapore and it could have been a more nail-biting race had Hussein of Indonesia not quit the titghrope challenge atop Marina Bay Sands. Rich Herrera executed this part flawlessly and joined forces with Rich Hardin for the memory-based road block en route to the win.

The Singaporean team of Claire and Michelle clocked in second, and despite getting a much later flight from Seoul to Singapore, outlasted Hussein and Natasha of Indonesia who had to endure a 4-hour penalty for not completing a challenge.

This is a spliced blog for Men’s Health Magazine and The Amazing Race Asia 4.

If you buy the December 2010 issue of Men’s Health (Philippines), you will see Rich Herrera (and his fine abs) on the cover. It only costs P140 (the magazine, not the abs). 😉

At the same time, Rich and his namesake & good buddy Rich (Hardin) are in the Top 3 of The Amazing Race Asia 4 which will have its’ Season Finale tonight at 9PM on the AXN Channel. Watch and see if the Philippine Team will win the USD100,000 top prize or end as a runners-up to a team from either Indonesia (Hussein & Natasha) or Singapore (Claire & Michelle).

Despite the rumors that the father-and-daughter team will become victors, I’m still rooting for the Philippine team. Rich & Rich – inspite of their navigational shortcomings from time to time – raced and played very well. I’m proud of them, especially Rich Herrera (my apologies!) who I initially tagged as just a typical society boy.

The 17th season of The Amazing Race premiered last September 26 (September 27 in Asia) and it almost slipped my mind. Good thing I switched to the AXN Channel right after dinner and was able to watch just a couple of minutes late into the premiere episode. i was able to size up the 11 teams as they head to their first destination – London, England. It may be too early but the ones I really like among them are the Doctors (diabetic Nat Strand and Kat Chang) and the Gleeks (Ivy League Acapella Singers Connor Diemand-Yauman and Jonathan Schwartz) because they have the right attitude for the race coupled with a tempered sense of humor and are sincere in their dealings with the rest. I would love to see any of the two duos win this one.

I have read into one too many spoilers about the different pit stops and eventual results of the 17th season but I won’t spill the beans for you, my dear readers. I’m still watching the whole thing from start to finish despite knowing all the highlights.

I’m missing racers from Thailand, Japan and Korea. Two teams each are fielded by India, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. And one each from Singapore and Hong Kong. This could be interesting. The countries with double entries could either cancel each other out or help the other one to insure longevity in the race. So far, the two Malaysian teams could potentially go far in this season.

I don’t want to pre-judge but the two teams representing the Philippines appear weak to me. The “Richards” look like they are an Alpha Male duo but I just don’t feel it – a far cry from Rovilson Fernandez & Marc Nelson – my benchmark of a strong male-male team. Besides, Rich Herrera strikes me as a society boy who might find the demands and provisions of the race too spartan for his own comfort. On the other hand, Jacinta and Lani are Aussies transplanted to the Philippines to represent the latter. They could provide some quirky drama but how far will this take them in the competition? I just hope none of them gets eliminated first! Prove me wrong, guys! 😉

These teams will be formally introduced tonight by host Alan Wu on the AXN Channel via The Amazing Race Asia Season 4: Racers Revealed show which starts at 9pm (SIN/MAL/PHL/INDIA), 10pm (HK) and 11pm (TW/KR).

Let the race officially begin on September 23! 🙂
