JONAS GAFFUD LAUNCHES “THE CROWN: YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO BECOMING A BEAUTY QUEEN” MANUAL
Jonas Gaffud, the trainer who has produced a Miss World, a Miss International, and a Miss Universe for the Philippines, shares the secrets to winning beauty pageants and spills inside stories of the most celebrated beauty royalties in recent years in his first book under ABS-CBN Publishing, Inc. entitled “The Crown: Your Essential Guide to Becoming a Beauty Queen.”
With more than 30 certified beauty titlists under his belt, Jonas is undeniably the country’s premier beauty queen maker. Known as Mama J in the industry, his list of mentees includes winners in international beauty contests such as Miss World 2013 Megan Young, Miss International 2016 Kylie Versoza, and Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach who all joined their trainer in “The Crown” book cover.
Together with his beauty pageant training squad, Aces & Queens, the new author has become a key player in the Philippines’ pageantry success for 16 years now.
“It’s all about Aces & Queens’ journey, how we trained beautiful ladies all these years (and their stories as well), how we created our group, and how we evolved,” shared Jonas on what the book is all about.
“The Crown” will prove essential to both pageant aspirants and keen spectators, with its discussions on competitions’ crucial matters such as dealing with the height problem, question and answer tricks, and sashaying in heels 101. It also provides the Aces and Queens checklist and tons of tips on preparing for the big event.
Jonas also opened up about his biggest triumphs in his book. He said, “training beauty queens gave me front row, and most recently, mosh pit, to the exhilarating world of pageants. Seeing the ladies we trained showcase their unique beauty, walk and personality on stage never fails to give me a natural high. A definite milestone in my career is being able to help make Miss Universe happen in the Philippines.”
The handy manual provides inspiration from the stories of his group’s roster of beauty queens who all remained gracious through victory and defeat. The author also revealed other interesting details like his first-ever buena manocandidate, his Aces & Queens team members and their training forte, and his learnings when pageants wrap up.
“The best and most fulfilling part of all is being vessels for these young girls to be better individuals, thinking individuals, who reach their dreams and do something that make our nation proud,” wrote the beauty queen trainer who also heads Mercator Artist and Model Management.
Jonas launched the book together with the other Aces & Queens pillars Arnold “Mama Ruffa” Mercado and Nad Bronce, and their beauty queen alumni Pia, Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj, actor Daniel Matsunaga, model Marc Nash, and other special guests at a ceremony held in Marco Polo Ortigas Manila.
Pia shared her excitement about the beauty queen manual. She said, “the book gives me a lot of flashbacks when I was just starting. They (Aces & Queens) found potential in me at a time when I didn’t see it yet.”
“The Crown: Your Essential Guide to Becoming a Beauty Queen” will soon be available in leading newsstands and bookstores nationwide for only P295
The first solo blog feature of Katarina Rodriguez as your Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental 2017 wasn’t planned to be structured this way. It was supposed to be celebratory in approach, just the way another Binibini would prefer it had the crown landed on another head.
But such is the unique quality of her personality that branding Katarina as fickle-minded would fall short of a good assessment. In my opinion, she really needs to fully know what she will be committing herself into for eighteen (18) long months before giving in to the demands of the crown (or signing on the dotted line, if you will). Watch the video below where Jonas Gaffud of Aces & Queens was interviewed about the matter.

Just an hour or so back, I asked Arnold Mercado of Aces & Queens what the current status is, and he said that it is a GO for Katarina. He can’t deny the fact that the girl was still dilly-dallying on her final decision late Monday till early yesterday. But I am taking the GO as a sign that she has finally made up her mind today. If something on the contrary crops up again, then don’t be surprised anymore.
Such are the quirks in the personality of Katarina – you either take her imperfections as part of the total package or ignore whatever she ends up doing altogether.
KATARINA RODRIGUEZ on the Bb Pilipinas Intercontinental crown : ” I am keeping it and I am sleeping with it. I will win the FIRST Miss Intercontinental crown for the Philippines.”
Last night, Arnold Mercado of Aces & Queens posted a teaser of a Facebook update where his only caption of the photo of Laura Lehmann went like: “Are you ready for @iamlauralehmann?“. It was something that was immediately lapped up by all fans and followers of the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 1st Runner-Up as an encouraging indication that she is indeed seriously contemplating on whether to greenlight her joining this year.
Prior to the above, Laura posted a photo in her Instagram account – the one where she was awarded 1st Runner-Up last April 2014 with the caption: “Missing Pageants”.
Will we finally see the return of Laura Victoria Lehmann in the nationals? I bet a lot of you will agree that she will make this batch more competitive. All throughout her low-key pageant years, she has honed her skills in hosting and public speaking. This should prepare her well for the upcoming screenings.
So has the search for Laura Lehmann 2.0 finally ended? Your guess is as good as mine! 😀
This coming weekend – or January 15 to be exact – all roads will lead to Plaza Burgos in Vigan, Ilocos Sur where the 65th Miss Universe Cultural Terno Show will be unveiled starting at 7pm. What makes this event more interesting is the fact that three of the main key persons running the activity represent three different beauty camps in the Philippines – Arnold Mercado from Aces & Queens for the MU organizers, Rodgil Flores of Kagandahang Flores as the Director and John dela Vega of JDV as Creative Director.
Twenty three (23) Fashion Designers have been tasked to dress up twenty (20) of the contestants plus the three (3) hosts. And the city is really pulling out all stops to make this one grand feast for the eyes.
If you are in Ilocos Sur this weekend, make sure that you watch the gathering of beauties!
PS. Keep in mind the “no-selfie” policy that will be strictly enforced to everyone! 😉
Yesterday, Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina (in a red Christian Moya gown) underwent her final training day/rehearsals as the country’s bet and host delegate for the 65th Miss Universe. All bases were neatly covered. And the three pillars of Aces & Queens – Jonas Gaffud, Arnold Mercado and Atty Nad Bronce – saw to it that our Queen is more than 100% in-the-zone and on target for a back-to-back victory. The pressure is extremely high that it can cut like a knife if something goes amiss. So at this point, we can say with certainty that Miss Philippines is well-prepared, polished with confidence and ready for the Universe. I daresay that her preparations are even more meticulous than that of Queen P’s.
Get ready for #4M4MU (the hashtag cheer for Maxine Medina). She is ready to welcome all the delegates with a big smile and wide open arms.
There are malicious stories spreading in the pageant world that Jonas Gaffud of Aces & Queens allegedly “walked out” of the Theater at MGM National Harbor after Miss Puerto Rico Stephanie Del Valle was announced as the winner of Miss World 2016. It’s so easy to make stories and bold interpretations of something that can never hold water when faced with real facts.
Truth be told, Jonas Gaffud himself confirmed that he was inside the theater the entire time after the winner was crowned. He was in the company of another Aces & Queens pillar, Arnold Mercado. He even went up the stage to have pictures taken with the winners and Julia Morley (with whom he had a small talk with).
Afterwards, a security guy approached him because Megan Young needed her mobile phone. And since he volunteered to hold on to her unit for safety while the Finals was ongoing, he then stepped out and went backstage to hand over Miss World 2013 the phone.
And here is where talks of an alleged “walkout” started. Totally untrue. There is really nothing into this except to spread lies of hate and lack of sportsmanship – something that Jonas will not even entertain thoughts of doing.
So whoever started the whole thing, please check your facts first. Better yet, you could have followed Jonas when he went backstage to give Megan her phone. You would have gotten a clearer flow of events instead of putting one-and-one together and weaving an entirely different version out of it.
-End of story-
It’s true that beautiful luscious hair is a beautiful girl’s crowning glory. But an attractive face with properly-aligned features is the beginning of the story.
And that is where members of the Aces & Queens’ Class of 2017 started their training. Of course, all of them were properly assessed before plunging into the important session. And with the likes of Carissa Cielo Medved, Dave Grona, Raymond Galang and Jim Ryan Ros giving them more than just quick tutorials, it only takes a fast learner to easily stand out. Otherwise, it will be a rewarding uphill battle for a good number of them, especially the relative diamonds in the rough who need to be given extra doses of patience and understanding to learn the tricks of the trade.
I know all of their “teachers” and they are individually excellent in what they do on the face. And the young ladies should consider themselves very lucky to undergo the session under their masterful eye and hands.
What could be the next stop? The back-breaking pasarela and posing sessions with a “delightfully terrorizing” Jonas Gaffud? That should really set apart the innately graceful from the awkwardly painful (to watch). And I am pretty sure the original number will start getting smaller when the genuine stand-outs start blossoming one by one.
But wait! Before that happens, the Personality Development sessions should happen first. It started yesterday (photo below) with a few of the seniors (Ces Evangelista, Gerry Diaz and the lovable Head Facilitator Arnold Mercado along with guest speaker Bianca Guidotti) for the wide-eyed dreamers.
More days of polish (and updates) to follow!
