Truth be told, it is not very often that Miss Universe gets involved in some hands-on charity work, especially if the pageant is being held in the USA. So it is refreshing to see the 2011 ladies visiting Casa do Zezinho in the outskirts of Sao Paulo.
The Miss Universe 2011 candidates being serenaded by the musically-trained youth of Casa do Zezinho.
Casa do Zezinho – a safe haven for poor children and teenagers in Sao Paulo’s slum areas of Capão Redondo, Parque Santo Antônio and Jardim Ângela – functions as a day-care and after-school center to keep the young things off the streets where they are more likely to get into the bad elements of society. This is where they get nurturing in most aspects of life without separating them fron their parents. Further education is given, be it in music, culture and sports.

The Miss Universe 2011 candidates were showered with warmth and adulation by everyone at the center. And it is clear that they had a real good time bonding, playing, singing and dancing with the kids who must be overjoyed seeing all these beautiful angels visiting them.

If Brazil is hosting Miss Universe 2011, will a game of soccer be far behind? Of course not! Some of the girls were game enough to engage in a fun match of kicking and running in the field while wearing their most colorful uniforms of the sport. Host delegate Priscila Machado led the charge and you can see how much adrenaline-pumping moves they did. Check them out!

Stretching and wam-up, anyone? (L-R) Miss Germany Valeria Bystritskaya, Miss Tanzania Nelly Kamwelu, Miss Mexico Karin Ontiveros and Miss Malaysia Deborah Henry.
The game was for fun, but the girls still seriously played it.
A goal was scored and the girls started some wild cheers on the field.

In the lovely grounds of Hilton Sao Paulo Morumbi, some of the Miss Universe 2011 delegates were asked to pretty themselves up to have some photo-shooting time. These ladies are still at that point of not experiencing the heavy pressure of the pageant so we’ll see who will remain regal and gorgeous as the punishing schedule starts reeling in succession.

The word of the day is ‘out.’ With Miss Universe 2011 in full swing, the name of the game is to survive the onslaught of gorgeous national beauty queens from all over. And by that, I mean…OUTSHINE! OUTSMILE! OUTPOSE!

Miss Brazil Priscila Machado may not be the most welcoming host delegate, but it cannot be denied that she is in it to win it!
Miss Finland Pia Pakarinen is coming out from the cold Finnish weather to add more heat to Miss Universe 2011.
Miss Mexico Karin Ontiveros does not look bothered that the reigning Miss Universe titleholder is her compatriot Ximena. She is zeroing in on a back-to-back victory.
Miss Nicaragua Adriana Dom is not about to take the competition sitting down. She wants to stand out and become her country's first Miss Universe.
Roommates or not, Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup (L) and Miss Korea Jung So-ra won't have difficulty communicating with each other since the latter speaks fluent American English.
Miss Costa Rica Johanna Solano may look shorter than her reported height of 5'9" in person, but she remains to have one of the sweetest faces in the pageant.
Miss Ireland Aoife (pronounce 'ee-fah') Hannon is bringing the luck of the Irish that her predecessor Rozzana Purcell had last year.
Miss Dominican Republic Dalia Fernandez plans to use those soulful eyes to wow Sao Paulo from Day 1.
Just wait for Miss Panama Sheldry Saez to unpack her luggages before turning the heat on. She is one of the forces to reckon with in the pageant.
Miss Trinidad & Tobago Gabrielle Walcott is one of the oldest delegates at 27. But don't let the number fool you into thinking that she will serve as big sister to everyone.
Getting into the carnival spirit, Miss Paraguay Alba Riquelme (L) and Miss USA Alyssa Campanella are. Who's fiercer?
Miss China Luo Zilin is fast becoming a favorite in Sao Paulo. Don't ask me why just yet. She's very tall and a master of the runway, though.
Aoife (pronounced as ‘ee-fah’) Hannon, 19, representing Listowel, was crowned Miss Universe Ireland 2011 during the weekend in Dublin. The 5’10” beauty takes over last year’s Rozanna Purcell who had quite a memorable year after making waves in Las Vegas and placing in the Top 10 of Miss Universe 2010.
But the big question is this: will Aoife match or exceed Rozanna’s achievement? The latter is a hard act to follow but nothing is impossible in the oft-crazy and unpredictable world of international beauty competitions.
Aoife has the height and charm. Let’s see how she will transform between now and mid-August when she departs for Sao Paolo, Brazil for Miss Universe 2011.
Good luck, girl! 😉
