Whose destiny will it be?
So many unanswered questions in my mind that will finally be clarified soon.
Will the Philippines win its 5th or Colombia its 3rd? Will Italy achieve its historic first win in the competition? Will the USA quench its longing for a new win after more than 10 years of waiting for its 9th? In the same breath, will Venezuela nail their 8th? Or will a totally surprise (and surprised) winner from a country with middling sash factor walk off with the Mouawad crown?
I honestly believe that one of the sixteen ladies above is capable of becoming the 71st Miss Universe, but none as strong a chance as the ones occupying the first five (5) slots:
Philippines – Celeste Cortesi
Colombia – Maria Fernanda Aristizabal
USA – R’Bonney Gabriel
Italy – Virginia Stablum
Venezuela – Amanda Dudamel
Dominican Republic – Andreina Martinez Founier
Peru – Alessia Rovegno
Puerto Rico – Ashley Ann Cariño
Brazil – Mia Mamede
Thailand – Anna Sueangam-Iam
Gabriela Dos Santos – Curacao
Ndavi Nokeri – South Africa
Guatemala – Ivana Batchelor
Bahrain – Evlin Khalifa
Mexico – Irma Miranda
Cambodia – Manita Hang
If it’s true that the cut from the Top 16 will go straight to a razor-sharp Top 5 right away, then I will keep my faith in the Philippines, Colombia, USA, Italy and Venezuela to take their positions before all Q&As begin.
I’d really like to see the Final 3 being the same countries which made it that far during Miss Universe 2015 when Pia Wurtzbach won. It will be so cool to have Miss Philippines and Miss USA (who is half-Filipina) up there. If they will end up holding hands as the last two women standing, then I will go for Celeste Cortesi as the 71st Miss Universe.
So why is Celeste Cortesi my pick to win the 71st Miss Universe crown? She will make an excellent first titleholder under the new ownership of Anne Jakrajutatip. Transformation becomes her, having evolved from the throes of an unpleasant past in pageantry into a woman who can be beautifully confident – someone who can summon and sustain the continued popularity of the brand that Miss Universe has been known for.
She said it herself. “Miss Universe is a destiny.” Will it be hers? I’d like to think it will be.

I give Celeste a 9 out of 10 overall.
Her actual performance was faultless in all scored segments. The missing point is on the actual evening gown which did not take my breath away.
Kudos to her for rising above the relatively ho-hum impact of the gown.
My top favorites, apart from Celeste are Colombia, Italy, USA and Venezuela (a slightly distant fifth). They might as well make the Top 5 come Finals Night. 🙂

Before the Preliminaries of the 71st Miss Universe unfold in New Orleans, Louisiana, allow me to share the ladies I expect to deliver in both the swimsuit and evening gown rounds. Instead of ranking them according to my personal preference, I opted to present them in alphabetical order first before making any Final Predictions earlier during the weekend:
Evlin Khalifa – Bahrain
Mia Mamede – Brazil
Manita Hang – Cambodia
Sofia Depassier – Chile
Maria Fernanda Aristizabal – Colombia
Gabriela Dos Santos – Curacao
Ivana Batchelor – Guatemala
Hrafnhildur Haraldsdóttir – Iceland
Virginia Stablum – Italy
Alessia Rovegno – Peru
Celeste Cortesi – Philippines
Telma Madeira – Portugal
Ashley Cariño – Puerto Rico
Ndavi Nokeri – South Africa
Alicia Faubel – Spain
Anna Sueangam-Iam – Thailand
Viktoria Apanasenko – Ukraine
R’Bonney Gabriel – USA
Amanda Dudamel – Venezuela
Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Châu – Vietnam
Let’s see if all of the ladies above deliver. And then, I can give a more confident assessment of their chances of getting within striking distance of destiny, i.e. the Miss Universe crown. Or perhaps, give a chance to others who deserve to be up there among those unmentioned.

Will it still be the battle of the powerhouse countries for the 71st Miss Universe? Celeste Cortesi @celeste_cortesi & Amanda Dudamel @amandadudamel seem to be doing real well in leading the pack of contenders for the Mouawad crown.

Miss Venezuela Amanda Dudamel did a RBonney Nola when she departed for the US wearing her own design.
Seems like the trend really is to be smart casual and not be too flashy. I like the way things are happening, although what could have prompted this is the fact that delegates are arriving in the host country way ahead of time.
Miss Venezuela is one of the few national beauty pageants that select its winners one year in advance. And as you can see, the transformations of their candidates are truly remarkable.
Now let’s see who among this new batch of contenders will raise the Venezuelan flag in the big pageants of 2023.
CARACAS (AP) – Amanda Dudamel, daughter of former national soccer team coach Rafael Dudamel, was crowned Miss Venezuela Thursday in a modest ceremony without the lavish productions of decades past. Beauty and sport dominated the pageant scene.
Dudamel, a 21-year-old and 1.79-meter-tall tennis player and fashion designer, represented the Andean Region, which this year brought together the states of Táchira, Mérida and Trujillo, due to the organization’s decision to limit the number from candidates to 18 – compared to the usual two dozen – to guarantee compliance with the biosecurity measures decreed by the coronavirus pandemic to be held in a reduced space.
The young woman was surprised minutes after her coronation by a video call from her father, who was a goalkeeper for the vinotinto national team, from Colombia, where he trains Deportivo Cali. Her mother and her sister, Victoria, are in Chile…
