Before the Preliminaries of the 71st Miss Universe unfold in New Orleans, Louisiana, allow me to share the ladies I expect to deliver in both the swimsuit and evening gown rounds. Instead of ranking them according to my personal preference, I opted to present them in alphabetical order first before making any Final Predictions earlier during the weekend:
Evlin Khalifa – Bahrain
Mia Mamede – Brazil
Manita Hang – Cambodia
Sofia Depassier – Chile
Maria Fernanda Aristizabal – Colombia
Gabriela Dos Santos – Curacao
Ivana Batchelor – Guatemala
Hrafnhildur Haraldsdóttir – Iceland
Virginia Stablum – Italy
Alessia Rovegno – Peru
Celeste Cortesi – Philippines
Telma Madeira – Portugal
Ashley Cariño – Puerto Rico
Ndavi Nokeri – South Africa
Alicia Faubel – Spain
Anna Sueangam-Iam – Thailand
Viktoria Apanasenko – Ukraine
R’Bonney Gabriel – USA
Amanda Dudamel – Venezuela
Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Châu – Vietnam
Let’s see if all of the ladies above deliver. And then, I can give a more confident assessment of their chances of getting within striking distance of destiny, i.e. the Miss Universe crown. Or perhaps, give a chance to others who deserve to be up there among those unmentioned.

The last time a Miss USA won Miss Universe was back in 2012 courtesy of Olivia Culpo and the last Top 3 placement happened in 2015 with Olivia Jordan joining Pia Wurtzbach and Ariadna Gutierrez in the troika.
R’Bonney Gabriel has a couple of good things going for her. She is the second Miss USA titleholder of Filipino descent. What’s more, pageant fans seem to feel that she is the best US representative in a long time. Will she bring the country back to the top in the 71st Miss Universe? Personally, I would be ecstatic if she makes Top 3 along with Celeste Cortesi and Alicia Faubel. That is one huge wish granted if ever.
In the meantime, R’Bonney will play big sister to the ladies next month. With the new Thai owner of Miss Universe, I bet it won’t happen again, at least not for the next five years. Having a Miss USA as host delegate, that is.
She may be pure Spanish, but Miss Universe Spain 2022 Alicia Faubel speaks conversational Filipino better than most of the halfies who travel to the Philippines in pursuit of either a pageant victory or showbiz career. And you can easily feel her love for the country after having lived here for three years during her late teens.
Now that Alicia is training under Pinoy experts and will wear creations of mostly local designers once she steps foot in New Orleans next month, it bears watching how she will navigate her journey towards a second Miss Universe crown for Spain.
