Celebrity-models? or Model-Celebrities? How do you categorize thee? Consider the names Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, Mikael Daez, JC Tiuseco, Benjamin Alves, Daniel Matsunaga, Fabio Ide, Akihiro Sato, Benjo Leoncio, Lemuelle Pelayo, Ervic Vijandre, Kerbie Zamora and more. You see and hear them on the boob tube or the big screen. And if that’s not enough, the company makes playing field of the country’s three big networks – ABS-CBN, GMA-7 and TV5. They have representative personalities in each station which only goes to show that the seed of trust has already been planted in its’ talents. In the film industry, Regal Entertainment signed up quite a number of them to star in both commercial & indie movies. The catwalk and glossy pages of fashion magazines reign supreme here. Be it for high-profile fashion spreads, mainstream TV commercials or well-placed print advertisements, Mercator provides the best possible models to fill in the project. What sets them apart is the fact that crossing over to show business or beauty pageants has become a continuous option for individuals initially molded as photographic subjects and/or skilled ramp gliders.

Aces & Queens
I must admit. Aces & Queens is my personal favorite among the three branches of MercatorTV. I’m a pageant blogger, after all. Truthfully, this is where the people at Mercator pour their labor of love. Plucking raw and unpolished ladies and turning them into gems of world-class beauty standards is not the easiest thing to do. But train hard they continue in the efforts of coming up with Filipinas who can make us proud in the international stage of competition. As a result, their track record for more than one decade now is nothing short of enviable – eight (8) Miss Universe representatives, four (4) Miss World delegates and two (2) Miss International entries.

As I have told Mercator head Jonas Gaffud in my congratulatory message to him last Saturday, he planted good seeds to insure a bountiful harvest. Now is the time to reap the rewards for a job well done.

Last Friday night, he was recognized at the Philippine Fashion Ball as the winner of Best Model Management Award – a precious honor symbolic of his outstanding efforts in running an artist and model management company that has grown in leaps and bounds during the past eight years. Popular for bringing us beauty queens (Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, Janine Tugonon and Queenie Rehman to name some) we all love and adore (via Aces & Queens), he extended his reach to the handling of some of the country’s top-notch fashion and commercial models such as Brapanese hunks Hideo Muraoka, Daniel Matsunaga, Akihiro Sato & Fabio Ide. He also continued his foray to the world of showbiz when he started landing one contract after another for his wards who are now showbiz personalities like JC Tiuseco, Mikael Daez, Benjamin Alves, Ervic Vijandre, Kerbie Zamora, Lemuelle Pelayo and the upcoming Artista Academy hopeful Benjo Leoncio.

The guy is simply unstoppable. And to think that nearly a decade ago, all of these were but dreams waiting to happen. I remember our time together when Mabuhay Beauties was still an active pageant-loving group. It never crossed our minds that he will someday be looked up to as the famous beauty and talent connoisseur he is right now. 2004 was his first turning point because that was the year Mercator Artist and Model Management was born. The rest is continuously running history.

And so, I doff my hat to the one and only Jonas Gaffud. May you continue to bring us more world-class beauty queens, more gorgeous Film/TV idols and more fierce models on the runway and glossy pages of fashion magazines. My heartfelt congratulations once more!

Mikael Daez: Philippine TV’s Next ‘It’ Guy

Mikael Daez just landed the primetime TV role of Marian Rivera's leading man in the upcoming epicserye "Amaya"


Mikael Daez may be a relative unknown outside fashion circles at the moment, but not for long. The 23 year-old model and true-blue Atenean was just announced as one of actress Marian Rivera’s leading men in the upcoming epicserye of GMA-7 titled “Amaya”.

The handsome square-jawed six-footer is being managed by Mercator Model & Artist Management (big shout-out to Jonas Gaffud who heads the firm) which is responsible for the careers of Brapanese hunks Daniel Matsunaga, Akihiro Sato, Hideo Muraoka and Fabio Ide, plus Survivor Philippines standouts JC Tiuseco and Ervic Vijandre.

Want to know more about Mikael? Then here are excerpts from his “Body Talk” interview with TV Host/Entertainment Columnist Ricky Lo which appeared in the Philippine Star last year:

How was he discovered?
“Oh, I needed cash and my friend said, ‘Hey, it’s Fashion Week.’ I said, ‘What is that?’ He said, ‘It’s a fashion show; you can join and earn money.’ So I tried. That’s where somebody from Mercator saw me.”
A Capricornian (Jan. 6), Mikael is a six-footer who wears medium-sized shirt and briefs, and size-11 shoes.
How do you take care of your (model’s) body?
“I come from a family that’s very active, always on the go, a lover of sports. Being active is natural with me. It helps me maintain this kind of body. I work out at the gym three times a week. Sometimes, I run but I’d rather play basketball.”
What part of your body needs improvement?
“No part in particular. I just keep on improving my whole body.”
What part is most vulnerable?
“None.”
And what part is your favorite?
“My jaw. It’s prominent. They say that it’s an asset in modeling.”
What part of a girl’s body do you look at first?
“The legs. If the legs are sexy, you can be sure that the rest of the body also is. Generally, I like girls who know how to take care of their body, one who doesn’t slouch and who is active.”
What else turns you on in a girl?
“She must be spontaneous and a good talker.”
And what turns you off?
“Girls who are indecisive.”
What kind of diet do you follow?
“Well, I’ve been going to a gym in Glorietta and right beside it is Subway which has a 100-bucks promo. I love the roast-chicken sandwich. I eat it before working out and eat it again after working out. That’s usually my breakfast because I go to the gym early in the morning.”
Is that all for breakfast?
“At home, spam and egg with rice. My whole family grew up on spam and egg. Kung may garlic fried rice, bonus na ‘yon.”
For lunch?
“Japanese food preferably. Chicken Teriyake.”
For dinner?
“Nowadays, I keep my dinner light. Maybe just a sandwich. If I do a lot of work during the day, sometimes a little rice with ulam.”
Snacks in-between?
“Just fruit shakes.”
How much water do you take per day?
“More than eight big glasses.”
Soda?
“Only when I eat pizza.”
What vitamins do you take?
“I should take some but I always forget.”
Do you take hard drinks?
“Very rarely, only on certain occasions. Ordinarily, only beer.”
Do you smoke?
“No, I don’t.”
How do you cope with stress?
“I hang out with friends.”
What about massage?
“Too expensive. I would love to have it if I had the money.”
Outlook in life?
“I’m an optimist. Life is good and I look at things from a bright side. Life isn’t measured by the number of breaths you take but by the number of moments that take your breath away.”
How much sleep do you get per night?
“Six hours but I try to get more. I take naps between shoots or shows.”
Favorite sleepwear?
“Basketball shorts and a comfy shirt.”
How many pillows do you sleep with?
“Four. One under my side, two on either side and one I hug.”
Do you snore?
“No, I hope not.”
Do you talk in your sleep?
“I don’t think so. Ask my friends.”
Do you sleepwalk?
“I really hope not!”
Last thing that you do before you go to sleep?
“I pray.”
First thing that you do when you wake up?
“Try to get more sleep.”
How’s your love life?
“No girlfriend at the moment. I take my time looking for the right person. I enjoy meeting new people. I’m in a new industry, you know.”
How’s your sex life?
“I’d rather keep it a secret. Hahahahaha!”
Favorite hideaway?
“If I told you, it would cease to be a secret. My friends know where it is — a resto in Salcedo Village in Makati.”
Name three women you think have nice bodies.
“Jessica Alba. Miranda Kerr (Victoria’s Secret model). Alessandra Ambrosio (a Brazilian Supermodel).”
And three guys you think have nice bodies.
“Brad Pitt. Hugh Jackman. Kobe Bryant.”
Using only body language, how would you make a woman know that you admire her?
“I follow her.”

Mikael is a graduate of Business Administration from the Ateneo de Manila University. On top of print ads and fashion shows, he appeared in a string of TV commercials like Jollibee Champ, Dole and SM.

Following GMA-7’s press release of Mikael’s selection for “Amaya”, he will get his initial baptism of fire with Marian Rivera as her leading man first in the network’s new horror-comedy show “Ang Spooky Mo Presents Bampirella” before heading to more physically (and emotionally) demanding stuff once the production of “Amaya” gets underway.

Watch out for Mikael Daez because he is going to be popular within the next couple of months. 😉

The Spoiler has been spoiled. We all know that the person being rumored as the winner of Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown won’t be her because the Final 4 is made up of Actress Aubrey Miles, Brapanese model/actor Akihiro Sato, model/cager Ervic Vijandre and Fil-French beauty Solenn Heussaff.

Last night, the four underwent the final tribal council and were grilled to death by the jury members. Tears flowed. Raised voices abound. Tensions almost reached breaking points. But in the end, one of them will be voted as the winner of the reality competition and a cool PhP3,000,000 in cash.

Who’s your bet? The manipulative Aubrey? The Submissive Ervic? The Sneaky Solenn? Or the Good (and remorseful) Guy Akihiro?

My sentimental pick would be Akihiro because he is the most well-rounded among the four in terms of mental and physical participation in the game. His valuable help in the camp in terms of food hunting and the like cannot be denied as well. And in effect, he is the ‘least evil’ in the quartet, game-wise that is. A far 2nd for me is Solenn but I doubt if she will get majority of the votes to seal the victory from the jury members who look at her as just one lucky girl who made her way to the top with minimal ‘survival’ scars to show (aside from her foot stitches) and an alliance made more strong by Ervic’s infatuation in her.

Watch out as the Live Finale of Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown unfolds next Friday, December 3, 2010 on GMA-7. Host Richard Gutierrez will announce the Celebrity Sole Survivor by then. 😉

11/26 Update: After the completion of the last tribal council, host Richard Gutierrez announced that the Final 4 will be trimmed to a Final 3 which will add one more member to the Jury. The twist is that the votes will be counted during the Live Finale in Manila. So even before the 7th Jury Member is known, the castaways will need to be patient enough to wait for the finals. Afterwards, the 7-member jury will then vote on who the Ultimate Celebrity Sole Survivor will be among the last three castaways. Stroke of genius, I must say, in order to avoid damaging spoilers to the results.

According to the scoopbox of PEP.ph, here are some of the celebrities who are rumored to be part of the castaways for the 3rd season of Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Edition. Quoting the scoop from their website:

Sexy actress Aubrey Miles: will she redeem herself in Survivor Philippines after the Amazing Race Asia debacle?

This should be interesting…Princess Snell is a bratty and tactless girl who can create friction among the participants. I can see her colliding with Michelle Madrigal and Aubrey Miles. On the other hand, Bench man Jon Hall and Brapanese TV personality Akihiro Sato will definitely be vying for strength and good looks. They are hunks who can handle the show’s physical challenges without a doubt. On the other hand, model Ervic Vijandre is more known as the ex-boyfriend of Marian Rivera, while Solenn Heussaff is a Fil-French upcoming singer and occasional Party Pilipinas co-host who happens to be the sister of Erwan – the present boyfriend of actress Anne Curtis. Of course, we all know who Elma Muros is. An athete and track-and-field coach who made the Philippines proud in the SEA Games and Asiad during her time, she will surely give the boys a run (pun intended) for their money.

Real-life sweethearts Michelle Madrigal and Jon Hall are rumored to be part of Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Edition. Will their relationship survive the ordeals and challenges of the show?

Another notable casting detail is that Michelle Madrigal and Jon Hall are currently dating in real life…so it would be intriguing to see the dynamics if they end up in opposing tribes. What would be nicer to watch is how they will handle themselves if they reach the merge and the individual challenges start unfolding.

Ervic Vijandre, ex-boyfriend of actress Marian Rivera, is also tagged as part of the show.

Athlete Elma Muros during her prime...will she outrun and outjump the guys in Survivor Philippines?

Meanwhile, a separate spoiler from Pinoy Exchange spilled the beans on “Born to Be Wild” host Dr. Ferds Recio being one of the castaways…how true?

Another rumored castaway...Dr. Ferds Recio (together with host Richard Gutierrez) who headlines the eco-adventure show 'Born to be Wild' in a shot not related to Survivor Philippines.

But what I’m interested most is knowing where they are presently filming the whole show…All is know is that they are in a jungle island which is definitely outside the Philippines, as per the rules of the show.

Let me hazard a guess or two….could they be in a remote part of Malaysia or Thailand? Or possibly another island in the Pacific like the Northern Marianas, Guam or Samoa? Another Brazilian Model to hit Manila soon!

It really looks like the Philippines is a favorite country for Brazilian models to try their luck in modelling and showbiz. There’s Akihiro Sato, Daniel Matsunaga, Fabio Ide and Hideo Muraoka to name a few, plus, of course, Daiana Menezes on the distaff side. There’s another one who will grace the small screen via a TV commercial (quite unusually for a soy sauce) that will make most everyone wonder….who is that handsome guy?

Well…he is Luciano Stranghetti. He is 19, the reigning Mr. Sao Paulo (Brazil) and a runner-up in Mr. Brazil 2008. His looks are unmistakably Brazilian, but he also has an exotic quality that will endear him to Filipino audiences. The first time I saw the teaser commercial yesterday, I immediately got intrigued because I’m familiar with Luciano as just another Brazilian model wanting to score projects in the country. But to land a very mass-oriented TVC this early in his career locally, he must be a growing force in commercial modelling to reckon with in the months to come.

Do watch out for that new TV commercial of Datu Puti Soy Sauce “Marica” toyo-serye which will feature Luciano as the long lost husband of Marica.

All roads will lead to the historic Araneta Coliseum for the Binibining Pilipinas 2010 Grand Coronation Night. The culmination of the most exciting beauty competition in the Philippines – themed as “Shades of Glam” this year – will be made more engaging with a fabulous production number with the reigning queens and a serenade of the candidates to be rendered by no less than Mr. Arnel Pineda, lead singer of the popular American rock group “Journey.” Meanwhile, GMA-7 heartthrobs Akihiro Sato, Victor Aliwalas and Daniel Matsunaga will serve as escorts to the candidates during the long gown competition.

Binibining Pilipinas 2010 will be hosted by the dashing Mr. Dingdong Dantes, E! Online’s World’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2008 and host of the top-rating game show “Family Feud.” Fast-rising primetime leading lady Ms. Carla Abellana also joins Mr. Dantes as segment host. For pageant fans, I was told that Miss Japan 2006 and Miss Universe 2006 First Runner-Up Kurara Chibana will serve as one of the judges.

The Grand Coronation Night will be telecast later at 10:00 pm only on the Kapuso Network, GMA-7.

Lia Andrea Ramos, Bb Pilipinas Universe of 2006 and Ms. Photogenic @ the Miss Universe Pageant in Los Angeles that same year, has decided to come back to the Philippines to put up a beauty shool in partnership with Gold’s Gym. Lia has been modeling abroad after her stint at the Binibining Pilipinas pageant. Little is known in her international career because she was based in Cape Town, South Africa. In Capetown she was like other famous international model here in the Philippines like Akihiro Sato and Daniel Matsunaga. They wanted her to stay in South Africa and do TV as well but she sees herself settling in the Philippines.

She came back in late 2009 after her stint in international modeling in Los Angeles. She has done commercials for Kohl’s in the USA, Heineken in Spain and other numerous commercials in South Africa, Germany and the UK.

Lia is a Political Science graduate of UP Diliman and has been working with the Asia Foundation prior to the Philippine pageant.
