She is quite the interesting Miss Universe Japan winner. 23 year-old Marybelen Sakamoto is the Japanese-Peruvian beauty who was crowned as Japan’s representative to the next Miss Universe happening later this year. She is trilingual – speaking Nihongo, English and Spanish – a skill that will greatly help if the host country ends up being a Latin American nation.

According to my friend Stephen Diaz, she’s the first MUJ winner with Latina roots and is bound to fly to Costa Rica which is rumored to host Miss Universe 2022 this December.

  1. She is not bi-racial. Her father (Sakamoto) is Peruvian of Japanese descent. Her mom is Japanese. So ethnically she is pure Japanese. Peru has the second largest ethnic Japanese community in South America after Brazil. The Japanese are prominent in Peru — for example, Alberto Fujimori, former Peruvian president is of Japanese ancestry.

    Hindi naman po bago ang Latina-Japanese mix. Look at the Brazilian-Japanese models. There’s also Mexican/Uruguayan actress Barbara Mori who starred in Rubi alongside Miss Universe MX 2001 Jacqueline Bracamontes.

  7. Promising. The only setback is pageantry is not the Japanese’s cup of tea. Unlike Filipinos, they are not keen on mastering the art and science of winning beauty title. She needs a very good pageant trainer to have a very good chance of winning the MU crown. If the competetion is held now, Between her and Celeste, Celeste wins by a wide margin

  9. The way I look at her she is absolutely stunning, no surgical enhancement needed, no tattoos to be brag and a woman of substance.
